More terrorist chic?

Unlike some people in the sphere, I don’t get all worked up about people wearing Keffaiahs. I just treat them just like I do those who wear pictures of the murderer Guevara: As ignorant simps, not worthy of my time.

This, however, will be hard for me to not to want

We’re obliged to reader Dennis Price for alerting us to an absolute must-have for any fashion-conscious and street-hip insurgent – the Kalashnikov MP3 player. Yes indeed, the streets of Najaf will never be the same again once the followers of radical Shi’ite cleric Moqtada Sadr get their hands on this little beauty – aptly named the AK-MP3. Actually, it’s just a replica AK-47 magazine, but slap it in your semi-automatic rifle and you’re ready to shock and awe the US military with the sheer firepower of your playlist.

It looks more like an RPK short mag to me, but then again, I haven’t looked at it close up.

I can’t wait for this to hit the hipsters in NYC, Boston Chicago and SoCal, though with their onerous regulations, they’ll have to buy the California model. And as Murdoc said

California models limited to one song at a time

Who needs a holiday?

I’ll be treating this particular Thursday like, well, a Thursday

Conservative grassroots group Grassfire.org wants people to waste as much energy as possible on June 12 by “hosting a barbecue, going for a drive, watching television, leaving a few lights on, or even smoking a few cigars.”
The point: the group wants to “help Americans break free from the ‘carbon footprint guilt’ being imposed by Climate Alarmists.”

Grassfire.org says it’s skeptical over claims that man-made sources of carbon dioxide emissions — from automobile exhausts to manufacturing plants — are raising the Earth’s temperature at a dangerous rate. Theories about global warming were highlighted by former Vice President Al Gore’s 2006 film, An Inconvenient Truth.

Grassfire.org president Steve Elliott, in a statement, said such theories are off the mark. “It’s time for Americans to purge ourselves of the false guilt that Al Gore and the Climate Alarmists have placed on us,” Elliott said.

Grassfire.org said it chose June 12 as the day it wants Americans to rev up their SUVs because it coincides with expected debate in Congress over a $1.2 billion carbon tax rebate program. “Carbon Belch Day will have at least as much impact on the so-called ‘planetary emergency’ of man-made global warming as the goofy save the earth mandates telling us to turn our lights off for an hour,” said Elliott.

And speaking of goofy save the earth mandates, Tim Blair posted a “When You Should Have Died” calculator made by the taxpayer funded Australia ABC. If I would have been more on the ball, I’d have had it linked up before it broke across the sphere yesterday.

First of all, read the url. The site resides at a main hub called Planet Slayer. Enter your car and its general milage, your flying distances, your home and family size, your home’s energy source, how much you recycle, your diet (how much meat you eat), your spending habits, etc. and it tell you at approximately what age you should have died so that you didn’t overuse “your share” of the planet’s resources.

I shouldn’t have made it past my 6th year. Already I’ve used up six times my share of resources. If you listen to these assholes.

I’m partially tempted to take this test as a death threat, andif the Australian ABC were not all the way over in australia, I might go have a talk with the taxpayer funded dweebies who came up with this insipid idea.

But for now, I would just like to ask: Does anyone else besides me see shades of the “Lastday” from Logan’s Run here?

Published in 1967, it depicts a dystopian future society in which population and the consumption of resources is managed and maintained in equilibrium by the simple expedient of demanding the death of everyone upon reaching a particular age, thus avoiding the issue of overpopulation.

I’m just saying.

Sorry about that

I was drooling a bit there.

Jensen.jpg
OK, more than a bit.

The Jensen Interceptor S by V Eight is essentially a total rebuilding of an original Interceptor, with many key areas upgraded with modern components. A General Motors LS2 sends 414 horsepower to the independently sprung rear wheels through a modern five-speed automatic transmission. The stock chassis calibration has been upgraded as well, and 17-inch wheels couple tire to tarmac.

I’ve seen a couple of the 440 Interceptor Jensens, but that was a looong time ago. I think I could quite easily part with an asthmatic 7.2L to a Corvette 6.0L without too much heartache.

Of course, my Top Gear addiction now has me lusting after the Aston Martin DBS

But I’m not being greedy. I’d happily settle for an N24 Vantage.

A Comfortable Protest

The kids aren’t all right. In fact, they’re downright insolent

Several Evergreen State College students have been sitting in front of the school’s Student Affairs Office since Wednesday, and they appear to have no intention of moving any time soon.

Members of the Students for a Democratic Society say Evergreen has changed ever since the campus riot in February. They claim free speech has been squashed, concerts banned and student records turned over to police.

Riots and the destruction of public property have a tendency to have repercussions. Imagine that.

When the SDS asked to stage a protest in March, the collage asked members to cancel it.

“They said that it was because of safety, but almost all the other events went through. This one had a lot less potential for being unsafe than the ones that did go through,” said a student who identified herself as “Courtney.”

SDS staged the event anyway, and it’s been suspended from using campus facilities ever since.

More acting out. More punishment. And here I thought that groups like the SDS preferred progressive systems?

So when students were denied another event on Wednesday, they took a stand in front of the Student Affairs Office.

The college says SDS was turned down because of its suspension. And in March, it says SDS tried to use campus facilities to raise money for an off-campus group, which is a violation of state law.

I’m actually saddened that the SDS pukes didn’t have the balls to break the law.

I mean, I’m sure that this wouldn’t have been the first time most of their membership had done so.

Students say the permits and policies are just another barrier to free speech. So they’re sitting, waiting for an apology.

“Until we are fully reinstated, and until students realize they are the ones in charge on this campus, then our job is not done,” said student Jonathan Steiner.

Mr. Steiner, your worthless parents may have raised you be an insolent jackass who is full of a sense of entitlement, but this is what is called “The Real World” and you are going to have to deal with not getting everything you want.

As for the students being in charge, I happen to notice from the picture attached to the article that you are the ones sitting on the floor.

Medium Rare

Who in the world could have predicted this happening?

Just about everyone.

Leslie Bloss is the only Republican running for an open seat in Seattle’s 36th District, but you probably won’t see her name on the November ballot.

She isn’t expected to make it through Washington’s new top-two primary, in which the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party, advance to the general election.

In the liberal 36th District, which includes the Magnolia and Queen Anne neighborhoods, Bloss’ two Democratic opponents are likely to take first and second place in the Aug. 19 primary.

“It’s really pretty sad,” said Bloss, who’s competing for the seat left open by retiring longtime Democratic Rep. Helen Sommers. “It’s not fair for voters.”

Although state officials had predicted single-party contests would be rare under the new system, there could be a half-dozen legislative races this year with candidates from the same party running against each other in November.

We told the state officials this would happen. We told the state Supreme Court. We also told the SCOTUS.

They told us not to worry and piss up a rope.

BTW, this was supposedly a “cost-cutting measure” for the folks responsible for printing the ballots.

I would just like to go on the record saying that this lack of democracy is more expensive than actually having a choice.

Security Theater

You know the name: Semaj Booker

He was the then 9 year old who made it all the way from Seattle to San Antonio by smiling his way through supposedly secure check points in an attempt to get to his grandfather’s home in Dallas last year.

I guess a year’s time wasn’t enough to fix the problem because Booker did it again yesterday

He hated his Lakewood neighborhood and wanted to go back to Dallas, where he, his mother and three brothers once lived with their grandfather.

He was called resourceful, brilliant and cocky but, in an interview with The Seattle Times, Semaj promised he’d never do it again.

He broke that promise — or tried to — early Tuesday.

Semaj’s mother, who has since moved her family to Tacoma, reported Semaj missing to Tacoma police at 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Then, at 4:53 a.m., Semaj was captured on video as he went through security at Sea-Tac airport, said Dwayne Baird, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration’s Northwest region.

Semaj took off his shoes, emptied his pockets and walked through the metal detector — even though he should have been turned away because he didn’t have a boarding pass, Baird said.

“He told them he was 14,” Baird said. “We’re looking at our procedures to see how this kid was able to do this … . We want to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Well now, he said he wouldn’t try to get to Dallas ever again. Mr. Baird and his fellow employees must have taken him at his word.

The trouble is, Booker lied. And his has shown that Mr. Baird and his fellow employees are either fools or idiots for not using the ensuing 16 months since to fix the problem. It took a reasonably secure minded Southwest Airlines employee to catch the kid.

Feel safer yet?

Ain’t that nice of them?

You lose child in earthquake?

Happy fun government let you have another!

Chinese officials said Monday that the country’s one-child policy exempts families with a child killed, severely injured or disabled in the country’s devastating earthquake.

Those families can obtain a certificate to have another child, the Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in the capital of hard-hit Sichuan province said.

With so many shattered families asking questions, the Chengdu committee is clarifying existing one-child policy guidelines, said a committee official surnamed Wang.

Let us all hope then that the UN doesn’t stop off in China with gifts like they left in Burma.

RNS Quote of the Day: 05/27/08

If I had unlimited time, I would have been spreading this sentiment about the leftosphere for the last couple of years.

Since I don’t, I simply utter it under my breath whenever I read complaints about the price of gas on a leftwing blog.

Which is every single gotdamn day.

If we want low gas prices, we should lower the costs of exploration and refining. If lowering those costs has environmental costs you don’t like, stop complaining and get on your bicycle.

Russell Roberts at Cafe Hayek

Help me spread the love to the leftosphere and anywhere else it is needed.

Do these people not talk to one another?

If you go to a public high school in Washington State, or any state for that matter, and you wanted to go to a college or university that is also run by said state’s public education department, you’d probably guess that the folks running that department would work at making the transition very smooth and easy, right?

Ah-Ha! You’d be wrong if you you’re a Washington State resident.

An argument for increasing rigor in Washington state’s public-education system comes from this factoid: High-school students can graduate with straight A’s but still fall short of college requirements.

The culprit is low academic standards, especially in math. State high-school graduation requirements include a math requirement that doesn’t meet the level required by the University of Washington and other state institutions. Credit the state Board of Education for seeking to inject rigor and accountability in the public system. If the board has its way — and it should — high-school graduation requirements will change for the better. Students will be required to pass Algebra II to graduate, a critical baseline since students unprepared for college-level math must take a remedial course, Algebra II.

9th Grade math is now “College level”?

We live in a world of fools (and people who are worse at math than I am).

Overstepping their bounds just a bit

The feds are stepping in on local business and forcing small town constabularies to accommodate the migrant population.

Maybe its more of that ADA nonsense from last week?

Nearly everyone in this small farming community speaks Spanish — nearly everyone except those in city government and the police department, where English is spoken.

And almost everyone who speaks one language does not speak the other.

It is a language barrier that has engulfed the community, which has grown over the past 20 years from 300 to about 3,200 year-round residents. Nine of every 10 Mattawa residents speak Spanish at home, and eight of every 10 adults speak English “less than very well,” according to the 2000 U.S. Census.

The Columbia River basin community, surrounded by miles of fruit orchards and vineyards, has tried to deal with its language barrier informally. From the first gas station to the last retail shop, signs advertise goods and services in Spanish and English. The tiny library offers bilingual story time for families. For years, police often relied on bystanders to translate at crime scenes. City administrators grabbed bilingual speakers as ad-hoc interpreters.

But the gap between an English-speaking city government and an overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking population has grown so wide that the federal government has stepped in to mandate that the city bridge the divide.

Really? How about “Tough shit. You came here. You learn English.”

I mean WTF? If they’re a year around population, then they have a non-growing season to learn a new language. If they’re migrants, then they should know that in order to get around they’ll need some skill in the English language.

Why is it Smalltown, USA who has to “Press 1 for English”? Why don’t the ICE employees who are handing out the work visas stop talking in whatever the language the applicant speaks? If the applicant can’t ask and answer in English: No fucking visa.

And if they’re here without a visa, well then, we know where they have to go.

Sounds easy enough.
