Saturday automotive post

A three-course spread of internal combustion goodness.

First, I Can Has Amatoya?

AMATOYA 1.jpg

This thing this is built to be taken into active wildfires and comes with a pair of remote controlled water cannons.

Get ready for a firefighting vehicle that might have arrived from your old Saturday morning GI Joe cartoons. Yanko has showcased an ATV design by Liam Ferguson that can carry remotely-operated water cannons and a two-person crew into the heart of a raging blaze, and emerge unscathed.

Firefighters currently rely on modified Toyota Landcruisers or other utility vehicles for doing recon on hotspots. Those work well in a pinch for navigating rough terrain, but carry only a meager water supply of 500 liters and cannot survive a burnover when flames suddenly sweep over the area.

The proposed Amatoya vehicle would use aerogel laminated insulation for its windows and body, and a temperature-controlled spray down system which draws on an auxiliary water tank specifically dedicated to that purpose. Military-grade thermo ceramic paint would swell upon heat exposure and add some sacrificial protection.

Screw fighting fires. I just want to see if I can roll it.

…..

Next, TIME and CNN.com got together and published this list of the 50 Worst Cars of All Time

Now if I could just take Dan Neil’s stinging hatred for trucks and SUV’s out of it, it would be a very accurate list.

…..

Lastly, Popular Mechanics also compiled a list, of the 18 Strangest Roadway in the world.

My locale, like everywhere else in the world, has its share of strange roadways. In my previous existence as a rowdy youth with too many hours to spend tuning and driving cars for his own good, hung out with a group of peoples who would gather, shut down these roadways and turn them into “Solo Cross” style race courses (In a just world Gary Scott Thompson would owe us money).

There are a few very worthy candidates on this list. Number’s 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11, and 14. (Especially #’s 3, 9, and 11)

Cap’n Urkel

with the “Ooops! Did I do that?”

Yes, Captain Phillips, it looks like you did.

Richard Phillips, the ship captain toasted as a hero after he was taken captive by Somali pirates, ignored repeated warnings last spring to keep his freighter at least 600 miles off the African coast because of the heightened risk of attack, some members of his crew now allege.

Records obtained by The Associated Press show that maritime safety groups issued at least seven such warnings in the days before outlaws boarded the Maersk Alabama about 380 miles off the shore of Somalia.

A piracy expert and the captain’s second-in-command say Phillips had the prerogative to heed the warnings or not. But some crew members — including the chief engineer, the helmsman and the navigator — say he was negligent not to change course after learning of the pirate activity.

“If you go to the grocery store and eight people get mugged on that street, wouldn’t you go a different way?” said the ship’s navigator, Ken Quinn, of Tampa, Fla.

Sailing beyond the 600-mile threshold would have added more than a day to the Alabama’s voyage to Mombasa, Kenya, and used extra fuel, according to the ship’s previous captain, who said Phillips had years of experience sailing in those dangerous waters.

Four of the 20 crew members told the AP that they blame Phillips for the hijacking.

“He caused this, and we all know it,” said chief engineer Mike Perry of Riverview, Fla. “All the Alabama crew knows about it.”

RTWT.

From what I’ve heard, Captain Phillips does speaking engagements now. Maybe he should stick with that.

The ravers need their fix

I guess blowing smoke up their ass isn’t doing for them anymore.

Obama shaped ecstasy pills hit the streets

President Barack Obama’s approval rating may be hovering in the 50 percent range, but that doesn’t mean America’s Commander-in-Chief isn’t catching on with new constituents.

There is now a line of Ecstasy pills made in the image of the 44th president of the United States, according to Texas police who have snatched a batch off the streets.

Ecstasy is known for a sense of elation, diminished feelings of fear and anxiety, and ability to induce a sense of intimacy with others.

Perhaps a good Election Day strategy to get out the vote?

That CBS reporter has now been fired, I’m sure.

One more comical fun fact about this: Ecstasy dehydrates your brain, causing it to shrink. After extended use, the shrinkage is permanent.

Fits progressivism perfectly, I think.

Please wait until the car is at a complete stop

And keep your Boogerhook off the Bangswitch

A 20-year-old Tacoma man accidentally shot himself in the leg while in his car Wednesday morning in Tacoma, Tacoma police reported.

The man told officers he was clearing his gun to it put away before getting to his second job, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. The gun went off and the man was shot in the leg. The injury was not life threatening.

The shooting occurred in the 1700 block of South 38th Street shortly after 6 a.m.

Troopers found the man, Fulghum said.

The man had just gotten done with his pizza delivery job and was headed to the second job at the time of the shooting.

So, not only is the guy shot, he’s going to lose his delivery job and probably have some jail time for not being able to legally possess a pistol.

In his defense, having a personal firearm is a very good idea in that neighborhood.

Just go die already.

The UK has a Climate and Health Council.

So it is no wonder that they want NHS doctors to talk to NHS patients about their carbon footprint.

The Climate and Health Council, a collaboration of worldwide health organisations including the Royal College of Nursing, the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal Society of Medicine, believes there is a direct link between climate change and better health.

Their controversial plan would see GPs and nurses give out advice to their patients on how to lower their carbon footprint.

The Council believes that climate change “threatens to radically undermine the health of all peoples”.

It believes health professionals are ideally placed to promote change because “we have ethical responsibility…..as well as the capacity to influence people and our political representatives to take the necessary action”.

The Council has been recently formed to study the health benefits of tackling climate change and promotes a range of ideas from reducing your carbon footprint by driving less and walking more to eating local, less processed food.

It wants to raise ‘health’ on the agenda of December’s UN Climate Change Summit in Copenhagen.

They believe that offering patients advice on how to lower their carbon footprint can be just as easy and achievable as helping them to stop smoking or eat a healthier diet.

I thought they were already doing this by denying NHS patients lifesaving medical care.

Getting that Cowpie High

I’ve known some pretty decent bullshitters in my time.

But this report from the Obama Administration’s Recovery.Gov site is head and shoulders above those guys.

It shows that nine jobs were created because the Corps of Engineers of Campbellsville, KY spent $890 of the Stimupalooza program on nine pairs of boots.

These are the numbers the CBO had to work with. Which is why their report is only a stack of rough TP.

More links to Recovery. Gov’s bad numbers can be found here.

The answer they can’t find

The leftosphere is getting a bit weirded out over this poll showing that the 18-29 year old set “approves” of the job President Obama is doing, but almost equally “disapproves” of his handling of the issues and events.

While it would seem that they are simply confused, that would be the wrong answer to this conundrum.

The correct answer is that, especially in that age group, to disapprove of Obama one would have to be a racist. After all, that is what they label those of us who do disapprove.

But to disagree on an issue/event, well, that is just showing an independent streak.

How sad is it that they are so easily hobbled by their belief structure.
