Tron 3D

My wife drug me along last night to Alice in Wonderland in 3D IMAX. My review of that is: great acting and visuals (being 3D IMAX) but the story was pretty blah. Let’s just say that the funny moments weren’t funny.

But, my real reason for this post for the trailer of Tron 3D. Anyone over 30 got pretty excited in the theatre when it played.

Disney won’t let me embed the video. But, click the link, make it full screen and 720p. Hopefully, you all have an IMAX theatre somewhere near you!

Which Gradient of Warfare is Which?

See, here’s what I was talking about. The same impulse that led a 3rd-grader to list the different types of bitches leads, in adulthood, to charting the different gradients/generations of warfare.

Sadly, it’s not quite as easy to make an impromptu rap song out of 0GW-1GW-2GW-3GW-4GW-5GW as it is with a list of bitches. You can still have fun with it, though.

Oh, and 5GW? Isn’t that just politics by another name? Including dirty politics, of course. Which includes espionage and all the rest of that clandestine stuff.

RNS Quote of the Day, 03/06/10

From FerFAL. Go read.

“I had to shoot people! Do you understand what that means?”
Those were the first words said by Jorge Mendoza, manager of an important company in Concepción, when he was finally able to call Buenos Aires.

“I had to shoot people, I had to shoot people” he repeated in a lethargy [sic.] state.
“Its hordes [sic.] killing and robbing, they don’t leave anything standing. And here I am with my wife and two kids, they are terrified. This is worse than the earthquake, we can’t stand it no more, we have no power, no water, no gas, no oil, nothing. We organized with four other neighbors to defend ourselves, no one protects us and we haven’t slept in 3 days, God, someone please do something,” he said. “They are robbing people that travel alone we cant move, we’re damned to hell and no one does anything to help us.”

Education, or just really expensive job training with some fancy perks?

Two perspectives.

Ordinary Gentlemen

Front Porch Republic

As as Engineer, I have a degree of specialization (idiocy), but I did take advantage of the University and take non-Engineering electives beyond the 5 required ones (and I actually got funny looks from advisors and classmates for doing it).  I think though, for the most part, these guys are right, even the old Ivy Leagues are catering to the whims of the students instead of holding the standards high.

Otis McDonald Autographs the Bill of Rights

…for lucky Calgunner Wash. This was of course post-argument, in front of the Supreme Court. Also in the pic are Alan Gottlieb and Alan Gura, who is chatting with Calgunner The_Quark. I think that’s possibly Gene Hoffman with the glasses.

For Heller, the first person in line at the Supreme Court was an arfcommer. This year, it was a couple of Calgunners. Calgunner Blackrazor was one of ’em . Yay!

Blackrazor notes:

There was a lot of fire in that courtroom. I couldn’t believe the hostility, right from the get go, from Scalia, directed towards the incorporation of the 2nd via P&I. You could tell he had just been itching to let loose the dogs on Gura on that point.

The audio will be VERY interesting to listen to, whenever it’s released.

Friday Fiction: Two-Fer

You get two this week, as I missed last week due to Kaya’s misadventures.

It occurred to me from the comments to Leiningen vs. The Ants that perhaps some of you folks haven’t yet read The Most Dangerous Game. One of the best-crafted endings in fiction, IMO. Beats O. Henry all to hell.
If you have read it before, of course, it’s well worth the quick re-read.

Friday Fiction: Space

John Buchan is one of my favorite authors. Here he steps into the otherworldly, a bit off his usual track.

The accompanying poem is oddly apropos.

RNS Quote of the Day, 03/05/10

Wendy McElroy highlights one approach being pioneered by the town of Tracey [sic.], California: The city will now impose a surcharge on emergency services that have already been paid for through taxes. Residents of that city will be charged $300 for the fire department to respond to a medical emergency; non-residents will be billed $400 for the same service. There is the option of paying an annual $48 fee for “premium” 911 service.

Note carefully that this is not privatization. Taxes will still be extracted, but tax victims will now have the privilege of paying twice for the same services. If you’re a Tracey resident and see someone having a heart attack, McElroy wryly comments, “you should quickly set a trash bin on fire. Otherwise, by calling for help, your monthly budget may not stretch to include mortgage or food.” Tracey’s political class simpers that the city government is running a $9 million budget deficit. Interestingly, that is exactly the amount spent each year on employee pensions.

Emphasis mine. Tracy’s just over the hills from me; that benighted town was one of the first places to see homebuilding (and thus property tax revenues) explode during the housing boom as Bay Area residents facing starter-home prices of $500k for crack houses in Oakland raced to buy nice new homes in the rural Central Valley. A two-hour commute to SF or San Jose was worth the opportunity to finally own your own home. And it spread from there all the way down to Bakersfield. (The high-speed-rail boondoggle was, for a time, all about expanding to a radius of hundreds of miles the pool of potential commuters to Bay Area jobs.) Of course when it all collapsed, we saw the foreclosure virus spread in reverse. Thus far, the worst seems to have stayed over the hills from our little valley. But you couldn’t get me to live in Tracy now if you paid me.
