RNS Quote of the Day, 03/24/10

From the ever-cheery Vin Suprynowicz:

…[I]t’s coming to an end. The pendulum is about to start swinging the other way, and the thing about pendulums is they don’t generally stop when they get back to a reasonable middle ground. I fear some of us will live to see corpses hanging from light poles, with signs pinned to their chests reading “Thief said he / would sue us.” Some of us will live to see central bankers who lived off treasure looted from the productive class by stealing our savings and replacing them with funny money suffer similar fates.

Is that a threat? No more than it’s a threat to say “Kids who play in traffic will eventually get hurt.”

Mandated Health Insurance

This a simple problem to solve.  Don’t mandate health insurance, but require that if you do not have coverage, you had better have a DNR/Living Will on file, and hospitals are not required to do anything but the bare minimum to keep you alive until they have a name & proof of insurance, or the DNR on hand.

RNS Quote of the Past: 03/23/1775

Today is the 235th anniversary of Patrick Henry’s famous speech before the Virginia Delegation. Henry knew that the rebels in New England would surely be defeated if they did not team up with the reluctant colonists of Virginia, the largest colony by far (much larger than the state of Virginia is today). Patrick Henry was able to persuade his fellow Virginians to join the fight, and with that, the great coalition was formed.

The below speech may be better than anything ever said by Ronald Reagan, known of course as the “Great Communicator.” It should be noted that Henry gave this speech without a teleprompter, or any notes at all for that matter.

When you read the speech, try to put yourself in the room, in the context of the tyranny of the times. Now, relate that tyranny to what happened on Sunday in D.C. and apply the words to today.

RNS Quote of the Day: 03/23/10

I don’t know how much MSNBC any of y’all watch, but I stopped watching any of the other alphabet soup networks (including FOX) long ago. The comedic entertainment value of the car wrecks that are the MSNBC evening talk shows is very high. But their morning shows are utter train wrecks. The hosts and booth staff can’t transition from the studio to either live shots or stock footage to save their lives and the guests are straight from another planet.

I watched some guest-broad from Mother Jones attempt to take over hosting duties, while sitting next to the actual  host, because she didn’t like how one of the other guests was responding to her talking points. It was the funniest six minutes of live cable news EVAR!

I’ve also never been able to watch any of the FOX evening talkers, except for the Friday edition of Stossell. And it is a good thing that his show is only once a week because the format is so ignorant it’ll cause temporary blindness.

So, I must now admit that I watch Olbermann and Maddow almost every night.

After last night’s “Three Minutes of Hate” rant (because two minutes isn’t enough), I realized that he’d made a gaff. The topic was, of course “All the Teabaggers are Racists!!!1!ONE!” and the praises to Obama and Pelosi were gushing.

But I think he forgot that his shows have transcripts and actually can be digitally recorded.

No single payer? No sale. No public option? No sale. No Medicare buy-in? No sale. I am one of the self-insured, albeit by choice. And I hereby pledge that I will not buy this perversion of health care reform. Pass this at your peril, Senators, and sign it at yours, Mr. President. I will not buy this insurance. Brand me a lawbreaker if you choose. Fine me if you will. Jail me if you must.

It is hard to stand on your moral high ground when there is none on your side of the fence.

Just remember that all of you who plan on not paying, getting fined, not paying the fine and then either getting arrested, or standing your ground (aka: not going quietly into that goodnight) are all racists because Mr. Olbermann says so.

Geography 101 Lab Series: #2

Today’s Lab was the dreaded Global Warming Death Cult Indoctrination Essay.

To paraphrase the text book, the reader was told that there was no doubt we were all going to die, either via drowning or spontaneous combustion unless one of two things happened:

1 – We all went back to Stone Age lifestyles, or

2 – An unlimited supply of magic pixie dust was discovered.

Not wanting to be Epic Fail Guy in my second week of being a student, I went for the “Just the Facts, Ma’am” approach, though attempting to use as many facts that slighted the GWDC as possible. In particular, I found a very highly lettered scientist who, while a believer in AGW, contradicts the Cultists on the topic of how AGW could effect food production.

The Assignment: The Greenhouse Effect

The debate over the greenhouse effect of CO2 and other gasses is not so much whether it is occurring but rather how quickly, and exactly what it will mean. Research the current literature on this topic and attempt to answer many of these questions:

* What is the strongest evidence that the Earth’s atmosphere is warming due to human activities? On what evidence do detractors base their doubt?
* Warming is expected to cause a number of changes, not the least of which is rising of the sea level. How much of a rise is expected? (Be aware that estimates differ widely.) Which coasts would be most affected, and how badly?
* Growers sometimes intentionally elevate the levels of CO2 in their greenhouses to increase plant growth, and warmer conditions also may extend agricultural regions farther toward the poles. With more CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere is there also an expectation of better crop production? What evidence can you find of this possible benefit?
* Some dry regions will likely benefit from more rainfall, and some productive areas may become too wet or dry. What do the models predict for changes in precipitation? Which countries will gain and which will lose if the atmosphere warms?
* What international effort has there been to stop global warming? What is the role of the United States in this effort?
* Do you expect to see climates change in your lifetime?

Answer many of these questions in your paper.

2010 Will Be The Best Boomershoot Yet

…for me, at least, regardless of how well I shoot, because it’s 99.9% certain now that my wife will be attending. I’d thought this might be the year my Zoroastrian friend would show up, too, but alas, it’s not to be. Next year!

For so long now I’ve been wanting my wife to share the experiences that add up to make Boomershoot the highlight of every year for me:

–the drive north from California (especially the Boise-Orofino stretch, which IMO is as gorgeous as any scenery in Bavaria)
–Trib’s Place
–Gene Econ’s Clinic (whoops, gotta sign her up)
–The High-Intensity event
–the drive down that magnificent grade into Orofino
–the cameraderie of the RNS crew and other shooters
–the Boomershoot Dinner (it will be tough for this year’s speaker, Michael Bane, to top Gene’s speech from last year, but we’ll see)
–and of course, Boomershoot itself. Hopefully this year’s fireball will be more like 2008’s than 2009’s. 🙂

My wife’s never shot a rifle before, so she’ll be in the same position I was when I showed up to Gene’s Clinic in 2005 for my first Boomershoot. I think that’s all for the best — nothing to unlearn, and the “wow” factor when you make that first hit way out there is, I think, all the more exhilarating for first-timers.

For me, Boomershoot’s a bit like sex. You never forget your first sexual experience, and if it was good, you keep trying to approach or exceed that rush every time. Similarly, every shot at a Boomer has the potential to be just as exciting as your first one. Perhaps my logic’s flawed, but since my wife and I both like sex, I think she’ll like Boomershoot too.

How to make Berlin look like Paris

Set about having western scholars “critically evaluate” the Koran

This is a serious business. A team of researchers at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences is preparing to bring out the first installment of Corpus Coranicum – which purports to be nothing less than the first critically evaluated text of the Qur’an ever to be produced.

What this means is that the research team is in the process of analysing and transcribing some 12,000 slides of Qur’an manuscripts from the first six centuries of the text’s existence. Once that is complete, the way is open to producing a text that annotates and, presumably, provides some sort of exegesis on the differences found in the early manuscripts.

Remember, Muslims consider each copy of the Koran “The Holy Word of God” directly descended from His hand. For a non-Muslim to even touch one is forbidden. Personally, I hope the scientists used strips of bacon as bookmarks.

Anyone want to start a pool on the number of cars torched in Berlin the over next month?
