Lions, Tigers, and Bears! Oh my!

Now you have yet another reason to carry a firearm when you’re in the great outdoors.

Geocaching is a popular pastime here in the Northwest – but one that is now being targetted by a small group of environmentalists. Geocaching is fast becoming “geo-smashing,” with vandals destroying caches in the name of protecting forests.

Geocachers use GPS systems to search for hidden treasures left behind by fellow game players. Hiking trails are among the most popular spots.

“It’s so peaceful. It’s just beautiful out here,” says David Vaughn as he hunts for treasure on Cougar Mountain near Issaquah.

“This is one of those places that I may not have even known existed,” says David’s wife Jacquie. “It probably never would have been on my beaten path.”

But it’s what happens off that beaten path that has some taking matters into their own hands.

People calling themselves “Forest Defenders” have been searching out the caches themselves and destroying them – tossing them in the trash and posting pictures on the internet.  They say cachers are harming habitats and destroying fragile vegetation by traipsing off the trails.  They even claim caches have been planted on a sacred Indian burial site on Whidbey Island.

With typical leftist fanaticism, the eco-mentalists have decreed Geocachers too stupid to know what is good for the wilderness, and declared themselves to be the only ones who can save it.

These are the same twerps who join ALF and ELF and with the explosion of geocaching activity in the local area lately, this will very likely turn violent within the next year or so.

I’ve always said that stupidity should be painful

Thankfully, sometimes it is.

A man accidentally shot himself in the testicles at Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Lynnwood Sunday afternoon, police said.

The man’s handgun, which was in the waistband of his pants, went off at about 12:30 p.m. — an apparent “accidental discharge,” according to Shannon Sessions, a Lynnwood police spokeswoman.

“It made a loud noise and scared a lot of people in the store,” Sessions said. “I believe he shot himself in the testicles and he also had some injuries to his leg and foot. He was obviously in shock.”

As much as I want to feel sorry for the guy, I simply am unable to do so right now. And not just because I can’t stop laughing at him.

Can I haz e-postal match?

Yes, I can!

It has been a while since I’ve gotten together with Mr. Completely to put one of these on, but I was able to just barely slide into the hosting slot for the June E-Postal match.

So here is your chance for fame and glory and possibly a $50 gift certificate to Cheaper than Dirt!

Evens or Odds

20001.jpg

You can go to Targetz.Com to download Target 20001. Print out a few and then head out to “shoot some pool”, so to speak.

The rules are: You can pick either the even numbered or odd numbered balls, but once you choose, those are the only ones you may shoot. One shot per ball on as many targets as you can consecutively hit until missing. You may change from evens to odds or vice-versa if that is what you hit when you start your new target, but you must stay with that for the rest of the target.

The winners will be declared by counting the most consecutive correct balls hit. Ties will be broken by counting the most hits within the ring containing the number.

Classes are as follows:

CLASS ONE: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS TWO: Any rimfire handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS THREE: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS FOUR: Any centerfire (non-revolver) handgun with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS FIVE: Any revolver with no more than a 12″ barrel, iron sights.

CLASS SIX: Any revolver with no more than a 12″ barrel, optic sights, no magnification.

CLASS SEVEN: Any handgun with no more than a 14″ barrel, any sights, scopes, laser, whatever. This class is primarily for target pistols.

DISTANCE: 25 feet, or Ten yards, which ever is available at your range.

SHOOTING POSITION: Standing, un-supported, off-hand, one or two hands on gun permitted.

As Mr. C says “If you have something interesting to shoot that doesn’t quite fit in the above classes, go ahead and enter anyway.”

Though there is not an actual official “rifle/carbine” class, I’d like to mention here that I shoot this target at 25 yards with my 10-22 with a holo-sight and my Marlin bolt action 22 with it’s factory irons with my elbow resting on the bench. I have also shot this target at both 100 and 200 yards with both my .22-250 and my 308 from a bench rest.

If you’ve “got the balls” to try it, I will quite happily post the results. Plus, it’ll get you an extra entry for that $50 Cheaper Than Dirt gift certificate.

We’re working on the honor system here. That is why there is fame and glory involved.

Please have your scores to my email box by Saturday, July 3rd and I’ll have scores up on Monday, July 5th (email address is behind the second link in the sidebar). Any questions can be sent to that email addy as well.

Good luck!

The quickest way to get booted from NATO

Turkey has found it.

I’m sure by now you all know about the “peace” pirates trying to smuggle illegal “supplies” to the “palestinians” who got “killed in the face” after attacking the members of the Israeli military trying to board their ship for inspection.

Seeing as how the floatilla was financed by a known Turkey-based terrorist organization and had Turk citizens on board the ship which was being boarded, Turkey didn’t take too kindly to the outcome of the search and has made a very stupid statement.

Two Turkish activists were reported to be among those killed in the flotilla. Ankara warned that further supply vessels will be sent to Gaza, escorted by the Turkish Navy, a development with unpredictable consequences.

I’ll make a prediction:

Most likely, the Turks will soon be told or will otherwise figure out how stupid their idea of letting their navy get used by terrorists is and forget they ever mentioned it.

Otherwise, these two options are placed on the table.

1: The Israelis will let the ships through, and then search search them. When the weapons are found, Turkey will get all red-faced and “We didn’t know about those.” and stop letting terrorists use their navy as dupes.

2: The Israeli Navy will deftly cruise between the Turks and the pirate vessel and the first Turk ship to fire upon an Israeli ship will soon see the bottom of the Med. After that, is where it actually get unpredictable.

Where have you been? What have you been doing?

Coming to a vehicle near you!

A massive auto safety overhaul bill has made its way out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for voting. According to Automotive News, the biggest changes that the bill proposes is the mandatory addition of black boxes and brake override mechanisms to all new cars and trucks. The event-data recorders would track information shortly before and after an accident for a specified period of time in order to help investigators determine the cause of an accident. Legislators and manufacturers alike began to push for the recorders in the wake of multiple accidents associated with Toyota’s unintended acceleration woes.

And you thought you could avoid the intrusive OnStar-type  features by not buying GM vehicles.

I’m sure that those who live in states with mandatory seat belt laws know the progression laws mandating black boxes will take. It’ll start with “just before an accident” information and in a decade the Fed will find another crisis suitable to pass legislation mandating manufacturers to have the systems store years worth of data.

And not to sound paranoid, but you and I both know that “just before an accident” means storage of at least 24 hours worth of info.

I have my solution to avoiding this problem which I’ll (hopefully) be able to unveil in a couple weeks.

I want something like this

Subaru is bribing the owners of their vehicles for free advertising. It is called the Subaru Badge of Ownership program.

Essentially, you show them how many Subarus you have owned over the years and they will give you a round badge with that number in it which you can affix to the side of your current Subaru. They also have a dozen “Lifestyle Icons” which also affix to the side of your car and are shaped to affix next to the number badge.

BadgeVisuals.jpg

Why can’t Ford do something like this? I’ve owned four F-Series trucks over the years and would not have a single qualm in advertising for them. I’d consider it rewarding their good behavior. Hell, if Toyota were to do this I’d have to hope they were thoughtful enough to make double-digit number badges.

Sigh.

Not to be rude

But isn’t there somewhere else you should be visiting today instead of here?

The free ice cream will return tomorrow. If it makes you feel any better, I’ve already written most of my contributions.

Groupthink

The intellectual problem isn’t that some Pakistani nut tried to car bomb the Lion King, the problem is that our understanding of it will come from a gated community of idiots.–The Last Psychiatrist

Read the whole thing; it’s only a few paragraphs but trenchant is an understatement.

It’s a Day of Remembrance

Not just an excuse to take the day off and cook burgers and drink beer.

Now that I think about it, does anyone anymore take 3 minutes and face the East on November 11th?
