Some judges still respect the 4th

And they are conservative, with the liberal ones giving the police whatever power they want.

And because I suck at giving announcements in a timely manner

If you’ve got this Sunday morning free, you all are welcome to join my coworkers and I at the Renton Fish & Game Club range. The range opens at 1000 and we’ll be there just before that. $12 at the Clubhouse for non-members.

There’ll be both rifle (out to 200yds) and pistol (up to 50yds) action going on. I’m even toying with the idea of bringing out my .22-250 and the pool cue chalk cubes and letting folks take a whack at some just-under-half-MOA targets. Bring .55gr green & yellow box Remington Core-Lokt ammo as that is what the Riger likes best. I have a box or two that I would be willing to split up between folks at a reasonable price as well.

Scott and I will be the amateur range police, with Rangemaster Glenn, of RifleArt fame, providing the muscle to back up any warning we end up having to give out. I say “warning” because there will only be one given.

If you’re an early bird, we’ll be meeting for for breakfast at the Shari’s by I-405 and the Renton-Maple Valley Highway at 0830 before heading off to worship at the Church of the Holy High Speed Projectile.

Putting the Oil Spill in perspective

Since Phil mentioned it

Picture your neighbor’s pool.  Unless you live in Malibu, it’ll contain about 6,000 gallons.  That’s the “Gulf” for purposes of discussion.  Now go to your garage, get a quart of oil and pour it in when he’s not looking.  Pretty good sense of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, right?

Nope, not even close.  Put a drop of that oil onto a sheet of paper and carefully cut it in half.  Now do it again and toss that quarter of a drop into the deep end.  Even this quarter droplet (about the size of the comma in this sentence) is about 10% too large, but NOW you have a sense of what 4.9 million barrels of oil in the Gulf looks like.[1]

Now that we’ve grappled with the issue of scale, let’s look at the aftermath of this ‘catastrophe.’  According to the government scientists, seventy-five percent of that sliver of a droplet has now evaporated, been eaten by microbes, skimmed or burnt. (This estimate is in dispute, but every day the released oil is being reduced to get to that figure, if not beyond it.)

Now, you’re going to need to borrow your kid’s microscope for the rest of this exercise….

Na-na-na, na-na-na, hey-hey-hey

Goodbye!

That is the song Californians should be singing right now that all of the corporations on this list are currently relocating elsewhere because of the state’s tax and regulatory law.

Thanks not given

John Aravosis’ AmericaBlog took favorable notice that the Federal Reserve lost in court yesterday. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals said that the Fed has to release the details of which banks got bailed out and how much.

Who fought for this, you might ask….

Bloomberg News Service and …. wait for it…. FOX News.

Think they could spare a kind word for the network?

I won’t be holding my breath.

More Title IX Fallout

Taking that ignorant statue to the umpteenth degree.

A sports conference that always scheduled weekday basketball doubleheaders in which women’s teams played the first game – letting the men play in the later time slot – has altered the practice, after an anonymous sex discrimination complaint charged that this made the women’s games appear to be a “warm-up” act for the men’s games.

Now, hoping to avoid possible gender equity suits, other athletic conferences are considering similar scheduling changes.

So now, instead of the majority of the spectators arriving while the ladies play and probably getting into the last couple innings of their game, the women are going to get to see a mass exodus while they start their game.

If you were them, which would you rather play in front of?

UPDATE: I was just thinking about the next natural extension of this: Seeing as how you pretty much cannot watch TV today without a decoding box from your cable/satellite company, the Title IX freaks will demand that there be a “Blackout” of individual cable boxes for “The Big College Game” unless the boxes have registered watched an equal/appropriate amount of Women’s Collegiate sports prior to “the Big College Game”.

The “Equal/Appropriate” amount will, of course, be determined by the Title IX freaks. The cable companies will have to comply if they want to get the broadcast rights, and you’re screwed.

I’m not completely thick

In regards to my post yesterday, I get WHY people are upset.  I can easily see how the Cordoba House could be built as a giant poke in the chest at America.  However, I can also easily see how it can be a place to show that mainstream American Muslims are a different breed from the mainstream Middle East Muslims, and a completely different animal from the violent radicals.  The guy building it might not be the nicest person, but he is just one man, and the Muslims of NYC could very well find his rhetoric to be wholly undesirable.  Regardless, we can not abandon core principles because feelings might get hurt.  We’ve already abandoned the 4th amendment, and all that’s has gotten us is Big Brother.

Growing up, I was raised in the United Church of Christ.  I remember church as being a nice place, full of friendly faces and thoughtful sermons about respecting your fellow man and trying to live in peace with them through Christ.  Then our minister left, and the new guy that replaced her came to the pulpit with sermons of sin & hell & damnation.  I’ve never seen a congregation abandon a church so completely.  Within 6 months, the place went from being packed every Sunday, to having just enough people to fill the first three pews.  People generally want to be good & live in peace.  They won’t always flock to someone preaching hate & violence.  The Imam may want a place to radicalize people, but he may not get it even if he builds it.

Now, my personal hope is that they build Cordoba House, and the people of NYC take it as a poke in the chest, and instead of bombing the place, they do something better.  Something that show’s just how great this country is.  They can build something big & new & shiny in that stinking hole in the ground where the towers once stood, instead of the ego masturbations they’ve been doing for the past nine years or so.  I mean, I just can not believe it’s taken this long!  That site should have a bustling gleaming tower of glass, steel, and concrete, a symbol of the massive industrial might this country can muster, and that tower should have 4 smaller towers all facing East & designed & arranged such that it looks we are giving those radicals a giant goddamn middle finger!

But no, we have to bitch about a Mosque while we go broke.

RNS Quote of the Day: 08/25/10

In regards to MadRock’s post yesterday, there were a couple people who didn’t read The Rules Round These Parts or, if they did, they skipped right over Rule #9a.

Don’t worry fellas, I’m not going to embarrass you by posting your mistakes. But hear this:

While I don’t completely agree with him, what we disagree on wouldn’t fill Thumbilina’s thimble.

I’m more tired of reading people across the rightosphere whining about this topic over the past two weeks than I was reading the leftosphere whine about the BP oil leak in the Gulf on day 110. I don’t even delve into the body of text if the title of a post suggests that it has anything in it about this topic. Hell, sometimes, I just don’t even read the rest of the site.

Here is a quick explanation why: Because I’m tired of reading posts from bloggers who supposedly keep their heads out of their asses wailing and gnashing their teeth about how Mommy and Daddy government aren’t stopping someone from building something that hurts their feelings.

I am especially tired of those posts because the vast majority of them are written by bloggers who write daily about how bad big government is. What kind of bullshit is that? I mean, really, WTF? I guess that some people didn’t notice how stupid certain Tea Partiers looked holding signs demanding big government “Stay Away From My Medicare”.

Do I like what they’re building? No.

Should they be allowed to build it? Unless you can connect them, in one degree, to dead girls/live boys or terrorism, why should the word “allowed” even be in that sentence?

So what if 60% of polled Americans don’t want it built there. I bet you could easily get 75% saying that NYC should let the Greek Orthodox church be rebuilt. But guess what, that church isn’t going to be rebuilt because government isn’t friendly. Nor does it rule by polls. Thankfully. Nor should it.

Which brings us to our QotD

Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual).

Ayn Rand

She’s right and you know it. So tough shit, tough guy. Man up, get your emotions under control, and put your brain back in gear. Getting all distraught over Cordoba House is a waste of your time.

Make Your Own Shot from Wheel Weights

This is a pretty cool-looking product. An article on its use, with plenty of pics, is here.

Found the link at Varmint Al’s.  Varmint Al’s website is pretty much the website I want to build when I retire — just a big collection of musings and multimedia related to each of my hobbies. I’ve been reading his site since the late 1990s and there’s still something new I learn or find every time I visit.
