Faster than Stink

This new heating system is the shit.

Literally.

Google recently detailed how it uses recycled wastewater to cool the servers in its Georgia data center, but a company in Philadelphia is now going to be using sewage water to heat a building. NovaThermal Energy has installed a wastewater geothermal heating system in the basement of the Southeast Water Pollution Control Facility in Philadelphia in what the company is calling the technology’s first deployment in the United States. The Philadelphia Water Company, of which the building is a part, manages the city’s wastewater, stormwater — and somewhat ironically, its drinking water. The 1 million BTU per hour geothermal unit uses a water source heat pump, outfitted with a filtration device, to transfer heat directly from an adjacent sewage channel and turn it into electricity, providing heat for the building at an estimated cost savings of 50 percent.

Taco Bell and your local taco truck are helping cut heating costs. Whodathunkit?

Yes, the brainwashing is intentional

If you haven’t read it as of yet, take a click on over to Zombie’s place and read his post about the seminar he sat in on the U.C. Berkeley campus titled:

“Teaching as a Subversive Activity”

Yes, it is exactly what you think. There is audio.

A “please remove all drinks and throwable objects from your immediate vicinity” warning should be put into effect if you click over, btw.

“Stand Your Ground” is only a defense if the DA declines to prosecute.

Granted this is from Salon, so I expect some critical details are missing.

Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God

“Take Cthulhu,” he began.

I couldn’t help starting as I heard that word pronounced for the first time in my life; the harsh, dark, monosyllabic growl it came to was so very like the sound that had originally come to me from my imagination, or my subconscious, or my otherwise unremembered dreams, or…

He continued, “If Cthulhu exists, then he (or she, or it) can go anywhere he wants through space, or air, or sea, or earth itself. We know from Johansen’s account (it turned his hair white) that Cthulhu can exist as a gas, be torn to atoms, and then recombine. He wouldn’t need tunnels to go through solid rock, he could seep through it — ‘not in the spaces we know, but between them.’ And yet in his inscrutability he might choose tunnels — there’s that to be reckoned with. Or — still another possibility — perhaps he neither exists nor does not exist but is in some half state — ‘waits dreaming,’ as Angell’s old chant has it. Perhaps his dreams, incarnated as your winged worms, Fischer, dig tunnels.”

— Fritz Leiber, “The Terror from the Depths.” Emphasis mine.

Leiber’s assertion convinced me the moment I read it — that is how That Name is pronounced. One syllable. Try it.

Ever since, tripe like this annoys the hell out of me. They’re not saying it right!

Not that Cthulhu cares whether his puny followers say his name correctly, but if he did, I’d think he’d be a mite annoyed, wouldn’t you?

Ah well. “The Terror from the Depths” is worth seeking out. I’ve said before it’s my favorite Lovecraftian tale. It’s in Heroes and Horrors, (which also has the wonderful “Dark Wings,” a non-Lovecraftian masterpiece and another favorite.

“The Terror from the Depths” is also found in this book, which may be easier to put your hands on. Enjoy.

Range day

20120407-222110.jpg

That is my brother shooting something that David might recognize. Phil brought it out to function fire. I am happy to report that she did just fine. All three of us were ringing a small gong at 200yrds with iron sights.

Oh, and Phil and I zeroed our Boomershoot rifles to 200yrds while we were there.

Boomershoot Cigars

Ohhhh man, look what just arrived, courtesy of cigar aficionado and blogger Jim of the sunken sloop New Dawn:

That’s two boxes of “Red Label” Maduros and Silver Labeled “Manny Specials.” Jim sez: “…all their cigars are hand rolled, right here in League City, TX. All from Cuban seed leaves, from throughout the Carribean/Central American basin. Having been a cigar enthusiast for over 23 years now, I can vouch for these being among some of the finest cigars I’ve ever had the pleasure to enjoy. The quality control is INSANE….have never had one burn bad in over three years of patronage.”

I expect one or two of these will be accompanying me to Boomershoot and be enjoyed on the firing line. I am a cigar newbie, relatively speaking, and always excited to try out more experienced folks’ favorites. Thanks, Jim!

Check ’em out!

As it should be

It’s about time somebody got it right

If Tampa’s proposed rules for the Republican National Convention are passed, protesters could not bring squirt guns into a designated protest zone.

But they could bring real guns if they have concealed weapons permits.

That’s because state law does not allow local governments to enact laws regulating guns, City Attorney Jim Shimberg Jr. said.

“Even if we tried to regulate it, it would be null and void,” Shimberg said Monday.

Not that the city didn’t consider it.

Of course they considered it. That is what governments do.

Cows fart. Ducks quack. Governments regulate. Simple facts of nature.
