Random Nuclear Strikes

As most who visit our little corner of teh intarwebz already know, the RNS Crew will be off at Boomershoot to worship at the Church of the Holy High Speed Projectile. This is a “BYOP” church, which means the shooting spots are not supplied with pews. And since we believe it is a good idea to be comfortable, I picked this up yesterday.

Free, of course. I’ll also be bringing the grill we had last year, which was also free.

There is absolutely no reason to be uncomfortable simply because you’re in a wheat field, in Idaho, in April. Coincidentally, the guy who was giving away the above pew, was a graduate of the University of Idaho, Class of 1968.

One more item I like to bring to Boomershoot each year is one of my BPCRS rifles. In this case I’ll be packing along my Sharps 45-70 and plenty of cartridges to smoke up the Boomeragio a bit.

We start our BPCRS match season this weekend so I’ve had to assemble plenty of cartridges for the two day match and a batch to bring to Boomershoot .  .  .

Immediately after the BPCRS match here in Michigan, I’ll be hitting the road for Idaho.

This year I will again try my hand at the Sporting Rifle Match held in Raton, NM the Sunday following Boomershoot.  You can revisit my rather embarrassing first experience at this event here.

As unprepared as I was for the event last year (if you didn’t read the linked post, I was just staying at the NRA center in Raton, doing some shooting and met a couple of younger guys who suggested I join them for the event. I did).

This year I’ll have the proper gear and better knowledge of my scope and rifle. Whether I’ll shoot any better remains to be seen, but I’ve prepared my body along with the gear. I’ve dropped some poundage and have been exercising more so hopefully I won’t be so gassed walking the stages with my gear and rifle.

I’m going with the .308 Remington again. I changed scopes and have zeroed the rifle at 200 yds.  so I ought to be able to get closer to the targets than before.

I’ll be using the rifle on a bipod and this time I have the proper sling swivel stud to mount the bipod securely. My 200 yd. zero was on the ground prone with the bipod.

I’ll be using Boomershoot as a warmup for the match in New Mexico.

I love Springtime  .  .  .  .  lots of driving (Michigan to Idaho and down to New Mexico and back) good shooting and being with friends that I get to see only at Boomershoot.

As suggested in an earlier post, I am going to try my hand at some of the high intensity Boomer blasting with my Model 94 in .38-55.

I took it to the range and practiced at 25 yds. shooting off-hand. The marble tang sight was okay for elevation, but I needed to drift the front bead sight a bit as the point(s) of impact were slightly left of desired placement.

I then ran it through my chronograph and measured three different brands of .38-55 cartridges:

First up was a 245 gr. flat nose by Ultramax:

Next up was some Winchester Super X 255 gr. soft point:

Last but definitely not least was some Buffalo Bore Heavy .38-55  using a 255 gr. jacketed flat nose:

As you can see, the first two are rather mild with velocities running in the 1050-1100 fps range. The Buffalo Bore is another animal altogether (and the recoil told me so!!) at 1900+ fps.

I don’t know how much of the high intensity blastorama I’ll be able to stand with the crescent type buttplate on the rifle. I can chamber a round and then load six into the magazine, so seven shots may be all I’m in for. We’ll see how it goes and if I’m able to reload during the “firefight”.

All in all, it should prove interesting.
