Vote Republican — for a Change

Anybody else remember this old slogan from 1980?

Looks like they probably do in the editorial departments of Iowa’s major newspapers.

BAR-Magazine-Fed Garand

I’ve always been loath to convert my Garands to .308, but the temptation of, say, sending ’em to Shuff’s for a Mini-G conversion that takes M-14 magazines has always been in the back of my mind.

No more. Mini-Gs are expensive. This is free:

20 rounds of .30-06 firepower; I like it.

UPDATE: Found another one:

Yeah, yeah, collector value, blah blah. Look, I have a Garand in original condition, and another one somebody turned into a “Tanker.” I’m currently jonesing over a beater Garand at the local gunshop that somebody stuck into a black plastic stock, and if I do this mod it’ll be to that one or one like it.

As Kenneth Branagh’s Victor Frankenstein said about bodies, “they’re just raw materials.”

Holy Shit

This is simply unreal. If Obama happens to win the election, if this is true, I don’t see how he escapes being impeached and removed from office — even by a Democrat-majority Senate.

Expired Potatoes? Yum!

I’m repeating this guy’s experiment. Same brand, same “best before” date of Dec. 2006. My instant mashed potatoes were stored in the garage for the last 6+ years, and our garage gets to 100 degrees-plus every summer.

Only difference I see upon opening is that the mix has turned a faint brown from its original white color years ago. Smells fine.

Tastes fine, too!

Had Lunch With Justice Scalia Today…

…he was kind enough to autograph some copies of Heller and his new book for me.

Many thanks to the Stanford Law School Federalist Society and the Hoover Institution, whose Peter Robinson, also of Ricochet.com, moderated to the luncheon crowd of a couple hundred folks.

The program will be shown on the Hoover Institution’s Uncommon Knowledge program. I will link when it’s up.

UPDATE: Here’s the link.

Well, this might push me to play a video game for the first time since 1996

I stopped playing video games when I finished law school because it was easier to quit whole-hog than to try to limit my playtime.

Assassin’s Creed III.

I especially like the III part. 😉

RNS Quote of the Day, Werner Herzog Edition

Life in the oceans must be sheer hell. A vast, merciless hell of permanent and immediate danger. So much of hell that during evolution some species—including man—crawled, fled onto some small continents of solid land, where the Lessons Of Darkness continue.

— Werner Herzog, The Minnesota Declaration: Werner Herzog’s 12 Rules For Truth In Film

Many of his 12 Rules contain wisdom applicable beyond the world of film.

As demonstrated throughout his masterful documentary Grizzly Man, and as the quote above demonstrates quite well, Herzog’s outlook naturally unveils the disquieting truths about even the most innocuous of subjects, viz.:

Not Monolithic

Back in 1988, as a naive college student, I attended a Jesse Jackson for President rally at a community college in the black enclave of Pittsburg, California. (I had been a Biden supporter, but he dropped out when he was caught lying.) After the rally, as the crowd walked out to the parking lot, I vividly remember listening to the black adults, who were not really paying attention to the white kid in their midst, talking very candidly among themselves. More than once I heard people saying Jackson had given a good speech, but he “wasn’t presidential.”

I think something similar may be going on this year.
