Rifle Surgery

Some years ago, Jim Rawles casually mentioned that he’d had the muzzles on all of his bolt-action centerfire rifles threaded to accept flash hiders like the Vortex design. I made a mental note that someday, whenever I stopped playing with specialty pistols long enough to give my poor neglected rifles a long-awaited gunsmith tuneup, I’d be sure to include muzzle threading in the scope of work.

Phil’s gunsmith, Mike Palazzo, did amazing work crafting Phil’s rifle “Barak,”* which is accurate enough to nail the center of pool cue chalks at distance with boring regularity. You occasionally see a rifle Mike crafted for sale on the web. Not often; they’re keepers.

Range Day 06smaller by PhilatRNS

When I felt the unbelievable smoothness of the trigger job Mike did on my wife’s Boomershoot .223, I knew where my rifles were going when the time came.

So last year, six rifles accompanied me to Boomershoot, and when I left, six rifles were on their way to Mike Palazzo. More than one of those rifles, I might add, had never been fired by me. I bought them knowing they were diamonds in the rough, waiting for the polisher’s art. They all got trigger jobs, shortened stocks, glass bedding where appropriate, muzzle threading and Mike’s signature muzzle brakes and thread protectors. When it’s difficult to even spot the seam where the muzzle brake meets the barrel, you know you’ve found a fine machinist.

I had Mike shorten the riflestocks to Jeff Cooper’s preferred 12.5″ Scout rifle length-of-pull, but not because these are intended as Scout rifles. Rather, I’ve got short arms, and when I felt the utter handiness of the 12.5″ LOP Mike crafted for my wife’s Boomershoot rifle, I was smitten.

Mike doesn’t do flash hiders, but I should be able to use the various Vortex or Rawles-recommended Hurricane designs.

I also fulfilled a longstanding urge to add the Pachmayr flush-mount sling swivels in three-position Ching Sling configuration (leaving the original front sling stud in place for bipod attachment — when I’m not using the sling, of course).

Such work, when done well, is (cough) not inexpensive (cough) — hey, the mortgage company can wait a month, right? — but for me, it’s worth it to finally have my favorite rifles configured the way I’ve wanted for a very long time.

If you are looking for a precision gunsmith, email Phil or me for Mike’s contact info.

If you ever meet Phil and his rifle at the range, be sure to ask him in a loud voice if he’ll let you “shoot Barak.” That frozen glare is his way of joining in the hilarity, trust me.

Michael Jackson Lives!

And (s)he’s pretty damned sexy. I never believed MJ was trying to transform himself into another Diana Ross. Just sayin.’

To clarify: I prefer to believe that somewhere, the pre-facial-surgery Sandra Bullock we all drooled over is sitting on a gigantic pile of money MJ paid her to “disappear.”

Hey, if they’re both livin’ happy, I’m happy too.

Coming to a nation near you

It has been said many times that what happens in (the formerly Great) Britain soon makes its way to the shores of the US, and that it is rarely good.

Here is another example of something we should all hope to avoid:

In March of this year, Azhar Ahmed of Yorkshire wrote on his Facebook page that he hoped soldiers would burn in hell. A sentiment offensive in its context perhaps, with several soldiers from a local regiment having been killed in Afghanistan that week. On Tuesday he was sentenced to 240 hours community service and fined £300.

Ahmed got off lightly in comparison to Matthew Woods, who made distasteful jokes about missing April Jones and Madeleine McCann. Woods will serve 12 weeks in jail.

Barry Thew, meanwhile, faces a total of eight months in prison after he was arrested and convicted for wearing T-shirt he had daubed with slogans apparently celebrating the shooting of PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes (I say apparently, as Thew’s defence claimed he was coincidentally wearing the shirt at the time of the killing of the officers. He is reported to have had a long-standing grudge against the police, who he blamed for the death of his teenage son).

What links these three stories is not just the element of “speech crime”. There is, within all three, a sense of offence against public opinion, and public morality itself. Woods is condemned for joking crassly at a time when the nation’s eyes were turned to the search for the missing schoolgirl in Machynlleth.

Three detestable sods. Three detestable statements.

While each may deserve a righteous ass kicking or ten, none of what they said deserves an interaction with the criminal justice system. Not a shilling in fines. Not a second in front of a magistrate. And definitely not any time served.

The Telegraph calls it “shocking”.

Personally, I’m calling it a violation of human rights.

Fuck You Too, You Ignorant Old Man

Watching retired Justice John Paul Stevens muttering away at the Brady Center presentation on C-SPAN today, I could only shake my head:

[Miller] was generally understood to limiting the scope of the Second Amendment to the uses of arms that were related to military activities,” Stevens said today during a question-and-answer session after a speech today with the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence’s Legal Action Project. “The Court did not overrule Miller [in Heller]. Instead it ‘read Miller to say only that the Second Amendment does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes, such as short-barreled shotguns . . . Thus, the Second Amendment provides no obstacle to regulations permitting the ownership or the use of the sorts of the automatic weapons used in the tragic multiple killings in Virginia, Colorado, or Arizona in recent years.

Emphasis mine, spit, spit.

What’s missing in the ellipse above, and when the transcript comes out I’ll add it, is that Stevens was also talking about machine guns. It was very, very clear from his statements that he understood “machine guns” to be “automatic weapons,” which is correct — but he added that he was saddened and astonished that Congress had not taken legislative action against “the sorts of the automatic weapons used in the tragic multiple killings in Virginia, Colorado, or Arizona in recent years.”

As y’all know, none of those killings involved automatic weapons (already legislated up the wazoo and pretty effectively prohibited from most private ownership, thank you very much), but rather semi-autos like you and I own and use for defense of our home and person.

Gaah, this again.

Edit: George at OCShooters caught it first, I think.

As the song goes….

Na na na na,

Na na na na,

Hey hey hey,

Goodbye!

The EPA may shift corn away from ethanol use to reduce demand on drought-impacted farms.

Only months ago, the EPA was pressing hard to expand the use of ethanol in the nation’s gasoline supply, but in the wake of this summer’s fierce drought, the agency may soon reverse course and actually trim back because of shortages of corn used to produce the renewable fuel.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, an influential Utah Republican, this week urged the EPA to curb ethanol requirements, as have 200 members of the House and the governors of eight corn-producing states.

OK, so it’s not gone yet. But nothing says I can’t get my vinyl out and the turntable warmed up.

“They Deserve It!”

That is the attitude of the leftist blogosphere on the topic of the family of the girl who was told that wearing her Romney-Ryan t-shirt was the same as wearing a KKK t-shirt to her “Democrat school” in Philadelphia.

Why, you might ask?

Well, because her dad listens to right-wing talk radio, reads news stories from right-wing sites, is a member of the neighborhood watch, is a prepper and takes his daughters to the rifle range.

Kind of like most of us.

The hypocrisy abounds. I’m not even going to list the multitude of examples of behavior the left believes should be from from repercussion, mostly because the majority of those examples I can agree with.

But they do not believe you should be able to express your political views on a t-shirt if those views are in the minority and the majority is left-leaning. That is just stupid and you deserve whatever abuse you receive. Maybe you’ll get your shit straight and start thinking correctly if they abuse you enough.

But at least the leftosphere is up front about it. Unlike human piece of shit, Daniel Denvir, who can only bring himself to imply that the family deserves the abuse they’re receiving.

RNS Quote of The Day, Scots Edition

No generation has seen their country so altered, so turned upside down, as children like me born in the 20 years between the two world wars. In our adult lives Britain’s entire national spirit, its philosophy, values and standards, have changed beyond belief.
Probably no country on earth has experienced such a revolution in thought and outlook and behaviour in so short a space.

–George MacDonald Fraser, How Britain Destroyed Itself

First Thing We Do, Let’s Kill All The Looters and Moochers

The Skeptical Optimist has it mostly right, but where he’s right, it’s not precisely in the way you might think.

…not everyone at the top earned their way to that position. For example, a few are the well-positioned rentiers leveraging their strategic position at a bottleneck in the financial system. As economist Tyler Cowen points out, “The high incomes in finance should give us all pause.” Why? Because much of it was not earned; it was instead obtained by gaming the system, by staying a step ahead of the statutes, by keeping profits privatized and risks socialized, and by monetizing moral hazards.

…A proper class war would require Democrats and Republicans to admit that the distinguishing characteristic of the enemy is not the level of income or wealth; rather, it is whether that income or wealth was earned.

You will definitely want to read the whole thing.

Amped from Atlas Shrugged. Can’t Sleep.

I keep going over the Money Rant, which was very well done in the film. Good omens for how they’ll treat John Galt’s infamous book-length rant in the third film: condense to essentials, dramatize with camera work and character action throughout, and leave Ayn Rand’s words pretty much alone when they use them.

Go see it. You will be very happy that this film was made, in this hour, and that you can experience it with like-minded souls.

And no, I don’t think Jason Beghe looks the least bit like Mitt. The film has a message, but that ain’t it.

P.S.: Who is John Galt? This guy. Works for me, actually.

Apropos of nothing, I’d suggest reading these quotes from the Money Rant accompanied by either of the Ben Sage gems below:

Ben Sage — Second Sighting (Subsonik Remix):

If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose – because it contains all the others – the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to make money’. No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity – to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.

Let me give you a tip on a clue to men’s characters: the man who damns money has obtained it dishonorably; the man who respects it has earned it.

When you accept money in payment for your effort, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of others. It is not the moochers or the looters who give value to money. Not an ocean of tears nor all the guns in the world can transform those pieces of paper in your wallet into the bread you will need to survive tomorrow. Those pieces of paper, which should have been gold, are a token of honor – your claim upon the energy of the men who produce. Your wallet is your statement of hope that somewhere in the world around you there are men who will not default on that moral principle which is the root of money.

Only the man who does not need it, is fit to inherit wealth – the man who would make his own fortune no matter where he started. If an heir is equal to his money, it serves him; if not, it destroys him. But you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money?

Money is made – before it can be looted or mooched – made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can’t consume more than he has produced.

…did you say it’s the love of money that’s the root of all evil? To love a thing is to know and love its nature. To love money is to know and love the fact that money is the creation of the best power within you, and your passkey to trade your effort for the effort of the best among men.

Men who have no courage, pride, or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their money and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich – will not remain rich for long. They are the natural bait for the swarms of looters that stay under rocks for centuries, but come crawling out at the first smell of a man who begs to be forgiven for the guilt of owning wealth.

Phil featured this one before, but it’s worth a repost. Listen to it on the best soundsystem you’ve got, and start cranking it at 2:00 or thereabouts.

Hannibal Lecter on Proper Scotch Whisky Pronunciation

That is, the esteemed actor Brian Cox, whose interpretation of Hannibal Lecter was, in my view, far more subtle, menacing and scary than that other guy who just chewed scenery. Unfortunately, Cox’s performance was in a movie that otherwise sucked.

Enjoy.

Much more here.
