Well, this might push me to play a video game for the first time since 1996

I stopped playing video games when I finished law school because it was easier to quit whole-hog than to try to limit my playtime.

Assassin’s Creed III.

I especially like the III part. 😉

Okay, so which platform should I get? Xbox? PS3?

They are both nearing the end of their product cycle, and are getting ready to be updated. There is much speculation on the release date, pricing, and features of the upgrade. An XBox 720 should be due early next year. Or get one of the expected Christmas bundles. The XBox is aimed at being a more than “just” a gaming box, and it has the Kinect for using body motions as input control, for whatever that’s worth to you. I’m not a heavy gamer, but that’s the way I’d lean.

My stepson has played all the previous Assassin’s Creed games (on the Xbox). I watched over his shoulder for a good portion of them. They are nearly as entertaining as a decent movie (and the plot of the 2nd one bears some resemblance to the backstory of “Angels & Demons,” where the Brotherhood of Assassins is fighting a shadow war against the Borgias to restore Rome and protect the beginnings of the Renaissance).

I’m not sure why he hasn’t already started bugging me about ACIII, but I suspect he’s been distracted by the Xbox Minecraft beta… He and another kid on his high school football team built the Acropolis. On top of a mountain. I was pretty impressed.

  4. I recommend the XBox as well…. I have informed the wife if she loves me she can get me ACIII for Christmas.

I have the first and loved it. I haven’t had a chance to play the second yet, but I’m definitely getting #3.

Minecraft is stupidly addictive. If you ever loved playing with Legos, it’ll drag you in.

Never was into the AC series. My current mode of amusement is the new XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Meeting aliens from distant worlds, and then shooting them in the face. 🙂

I remember old old old school XCOM… I was terrible at it.

  7. David: Xbox 360 to play this game specifically.

If you get it on the PC, it’s on the DRM track of DOOM. I have banned all PC games at my house that require active internet connections to play even when they are not online games. Like this one. Steam is Okay, as long as the game I buy through steam isn’t stupid and doesn’t let my kids play it when the internet burps.

Not to say PC games are all like that. But AC III is.

The answer is you want both an Xbox and a PC platform. The Xbox 360 is nearing the end of its lifespan. You can get good deals on the black console itself and games.

However, there are some games that are outstandingly awesome on the PC. Skyrim, for example, is in mod heaven. It looks absolutely stunning with basic, easy to install mods.

Having a Steam account is also goodness. Their deals they run are real deals with anywhere from 10% to 90% off. Steam games are also superior in their networking offerings, technology wise. For example, Left 4 Dead 2 and the previous version just work. I’ve never had problems playing online.

I also would not want to play a game like XCOM on the console. But there are many games that prefer to play on the console, even when they are available on Steam, simply because they are big games on the big screen.

Hope this helps! Give me a buzz on my cell if you have any questions.

  8. Also, the real brilliance about the AC games is at their core the AC games are science fiction. How cool is that. Say what you want about soulless big gaming studios, AC is pure awesomeness.

  10. Thus far, AC III is fucking brilliant. Act 1: Meet Ben Franklin, the man who is going to build you assassin toys. AWESOME.
