RNS Quote of the Day: 03/14/13

They must be doing something right if he is willing to go this wacko

That is why now, after the children’s massacre in Newtown, the absolute last thing the National Rifle Association wants out there in the public domain is ANY images of what happened that tragic day.

But I have a prediction. I believe someone in Newtown, Connecticut – a grieving parent, an upset law enforcement officer, a citizen who has seen enough of this carnage in our country – somebody, someday soon, is going to leak the crime scene photos of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. And when the American people see what bullets from an assault rifle fired at close range do to a little child’s body, that’s the day the jig will be up for the NRA. It will be the day the debate on gun control will come to an end. There will be nothing left to argue over. It will just be over. And every sane American will demand action.

Michael Moore – How to Finish Off the NRA

I have heard rumor that Bowling for Columbine was actually released late. If that is true, think I know why now.

Going Galt

The paperwork has been filed and my participation in the Obameconomy is now mandatory.

As of June 3rd I will be a newly unemployed person.

However, despite the gloominess of the situation, I think I’m taking my being forced out of the ranks of the employed rather well. This is mostly because I have decided to look at this as an opportunity instead of a setback. I am able to do this because I also have a plan.

My plan involves refusing to stay a net producer by going out to look for another crappy job, and instead becoming a gross taker for a while. Call me a leech, if you like.

They Love Veterans So Much

What does Sen. Diane Feinstein do when an amendment to her gun control bill that would exempt veterans and those currently serving from it is offered?

She says they’re likely mentally unstable and gets it voted down.

The problem with expanding this is that, you know, with the advent of PTSD, which I think is a new phenomenon as a product of the Iraq War, it’s not clear how the seller or transferrer of a firearm covered by this bill would verify that an individual was a member, or a veteran, and that there was no impairment of that individual with respect to having a weapon like this.

So, you know, I would be happy to sit down with you again and see if we could work something out but I think we have to– if you’re going to do this, find a way that veterans who are incapacitated for one reason or another mentally don’t have access to this kind of weapon.

In just that first paragraph, she shows just how out of touch she is. How can she not know about the military ID network?

And how can she think that PTSD was “produced” by the war in Iraq?

That video is from 1990.

And she is still a twat.

Institutionalized Racism Exists

In the Seattle School District

The superintendent of Seattle Public Schools announced Friday that a recently suspended unit in a humanities class at The Center School that explored issues of race and privilege will be allowed to resume, with restrictions.

The class has been changed from :Whites are Bad” to “Most Whites are Bad”.

The Seattle high-school teacher at the center of a controversy over how he was teaching about race at The Center School defended his approach Friday, saying students could handle the frank and necessary discussions.

Seattle Public Schools Superintendent José Banda announced Friday that the district will resume the popular unit, part of a humanities course for seniors. The unit was suspended in January after a single student complained in December that the way it was taught was upsetting.

The teacher, Jon Greenberg, said he was using a modified version of the so-called “Courageous Conversations” format, which included inviting visitors into the classroom to talk candidly about what it’s like to be a minority in America.

On Mondays, he would invite students to talk about what they had experienced over the weekend that made them think about race. If they chose, the students could also offer their own personal stories about race.

But after one student complained that the way the class was taught created an intimidating environment, the district suspended the unit pending an investigation.

The focus of the class is the supposedly ubiquitous “White Privilege”, and the district has told those in favor of the class that they can continue to blame whitey.

Very Interesting.

I find the most fascinating things following links from Glenn Reynolds… may the man live to be a hale 120.

Once again via his blog, Outlaw Gunsmithing 1 and Outlaw Gunsmithing 2.

This Outlaw Gunsmith seems a patriotic sort; I like the cut of his jib.

Brass Boltface

I have been having a persistent, if sporadic, failure to extract in my M1A Socom II.

I wondered if it were operator error — perhaps I was not shouldering the rifle properly, like “limp-wristing” a handgun? — but tonight I noticed little crumbly gobs of what appears to be brass on the thingy at the bottom of the boltface (on the left in the below photos due to rotation) — is that the extractor?

Compare to a Garand boltface, where the same part is smooth and literally gunmetal gray:

I will commence to scraping and see tomorrow if that cured the problem.

The Shot Heard ‘Round the World

Perhaps Honoring an Old Tradition

Via the ubiquitous Instapundit I arrived at this story: What a Way to Treat a Heroine.

In the main, and to the credit of the (formerly Great) British, the comments on the article are outraged in the Petty Officer’s favor. But, well… snubbing and disrespecting the enlisted types isn’t exactly a new fad in British society.

Tommy

I went into a public-‘ouse to get a pint o’ beer,
The publican ‘e up an’ sez, “We serve no red-coats here.”
The girls be’ind the bar they laughed an’ giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an’ to myself sez I:
O it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, go away”;
But it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it’s “Thank you, Mister Atkins”, when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but ‘adn’t none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-‘alls,
But when it comes to fightin’, Lord! they’ll shove me in the stalls!
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, wait outside”;
But it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide,
The troopship’s on the tide, my boys, the troopship’s on the tide,
O it’s “Special train for Atkins” when the trooper’s on the tide.

Yes, makin’ mock o’ uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an’ they’re starvation cheap;
An’ hustlin’ drunken soldiers when they’re goin’ large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin’ in full kit.
Then it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, ‘ow’s yer soul?”
But it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it’s “Thin red line of ‘eroes” when the drums begin to roll.

We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;
While it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Tommy, fall be’ind”,
But it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind,
There’s trouble in the wind, my boys, there’s trouble in the wind,
O it’s “Please to walk in front, sir”, when there’s trouble in the wind.

You talk o’ better food for us, an’ schools, an’ fires, an’ all:
We’ll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don’t mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow’s Uniform is not the soldier-man’s disgrace.
For it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ “Chuck him out, the brute!”
But it’s “Saviour of ‘is country” when the guns begin to shoot;
An’ it’s Tommy this, an’ Tommy that, an’ anything you please;
An’ Tommy ain’t a bloomin’ fool — you bet that Tommy sees!

Living in a SF Novel

Some days it feels like we’re living through one of those hard SF thrillers that just piles on the big ideas, each of which would deserve a novel of its own. Each link below is to something that’s actually happening now, folks.

To wit:

As a comet lights the sky, an invincible drug-resistant cold virus begins killing its way through broad swaths of humanity. TEOTWAWKI ensues, etc.

But wait! In humanity’s last hour, heroic Japanese researchers gather those few humans who have been infected but survived, and clone them all, using their proven technique to clone successive generations of mammals with no degradation.

Thus, for generations to come, the majority of humanity will be clones of a small group of pioneers, each generation cloning its successors while the genetic pool slowly expands through natural reproduction. Trapped on an island of technological wonders but with decaying, malfunctioning infrastructure, what will this new society be like?

Hey, I’d read it.

Women’s Pistol Clinic!

Today my wife and my 72-year-old Mom are headed to San Jose for LMS Defense’s all-female-student Pistol Clinic. Mom’s taking the Ladysmith .357 I got her two decades ago, but I strongly suggested she use one of our Glock 19s instead.

Incidentally, I don’t think I have been down to 100 rounds or less of 9mm since I bought my first revolver, and yet after this class that’s where I’ll be.

Pics and a report later.
