Women’s Pistol Clinic!

My wife and my 72-year-old Mom had a great time at the LMS Defense Ladies’ (only) Pistol Clinic. It was my Mom’s first time on a range, so she had to work on basic range etiquette, but other than that there were no hiccups.

From the after-action report thread on Calguns:

On 8 March 2013, LMS Defense conducted a Ladies Pistol Clinic at Metcalf Range in San Jose, CA.

WEATHER:
The weather was sunny and clear. After getting over some lower temperatures early in the morning, t-shirts were the way to go for the remainder of the day.

GUNS/GEAR:
There were a variety of handguns brought to class. Everything from a Ruger .22 to Glocks, S&W, and a 1911. Most people were borrowing gear from friends or family who helped them get set up prior to coming to class. There were a couple of improvised set ups from people who had ordered something, such as a holster, but it hadn’t arrived yet. A few people discovered some useful things about the importance of equipment set up how it could help improve their training experience. Overall, everyone was able to get through the day with what they brought and may have left with some ideas of new gear they would like to purchase.

SUMMARY:
The day began at 0830 hrs. with a safety brief and discussion of the firearm safety rules, followed by the three pillars; weapons handling, marksmanship and mindset. The instructor went over the 7 fundamentals of marksmanship; grip, stance, sight alignment, sight picture, trigger control, follow through and breathing. As this was a beginner level class, everyone got on the line and practiced drawing from the holster before loading their weapons. Safely loading and unloading was the next skill covered. Once sufficient practice had been done, weapons were loaded on the line and the class worked on presenting to the target. Dot drills at 3 yards, then 5 yards were done to establish accuracy. While engaging in dot drills, fundamentals of marksmanship were re-emphasized. After lunch, new targets were hung and shooting drills were done that covered topics such as scanning, speed and emergency reloads, moving off the line of attack and multiple target engagement. We added paper plates and 3 X 5 cards to our targets to work on precision. We also did a walk back drill using steel
targets and ended the day with dot drills to re-emphasize accuracy.
Once again, Metcalf Range was an excellent training venue. It was a pleasure to work with such a wonderful group of ladies.

After class, we took Mom home and did some basic home defense planning and scenarios with Mom at her home. After the class, she liked the Glock 19 so much that she wants one with a WML. I’m working on it….
