Howdy all! Sorry for the reclusiveness, but I’m getting schooled.
It seems I’ve fallen out of the blogoverse and landed on a planet called “Calculus”, which is covered in large graphs and grids, and am getting dragged about said landscape by these creatures they call “Functions” (as well as these other creatures which look just like Functions, but aren’t, and are called “Not-A-Function”).
Hey, I didn’t get here early enough to name the wildlife or I’d have thought of something much more lively.
Anyway, I need to get a rather particular average grade to get the hell off this rock and, as hard as I was trying, I wasn’t getting said average. And I’m still not getting said average. But I’m a hell of a lot closer now than I was three weeks ago.
I knew when I signed up for this class it would mess with my blogging schedule. I do go there right after work every AM and class lasts an hour. Then I go up to the tutoring center for at least an hour. After all that I finally get to go home and feed myself and the dogs and go to bed to start it over again.
If it is a weekend, I try to get ahead in the homework department and take care of personal business.
So don’t go thinking I’m off having loads of fun without you or anything. I mean, yeah, sure, there are college girls involved. But let’s be realistic about how many of them can I have to myself?
I will try to get by and drop in more often as this quarter winds down (only three and a half weeks to go). I’d also like to thank the rest of the crew, who’ve been doing yeoman’s work keeping the front page full.

Higher Math is over my head, probably because I’ve seen good thinkers like you sweat their nutz off trying to master it, but I wish you the best anyway.
When my late Dad gave up plain old doctoring after WW2, and got into (invented) the nuclear safety business, he had to take Calculus to learn Nuclear Physics, or at least, learn enough about it to apply his Nuke Safety ideas. He sweated BULLETS over the Calculus.
His difficulties scared me out of learning math properly, but my son’s a math whiz, and took college-level Calculus (and aced it) in the 7th grade…
The key that I (finally) learned about calc was to remember the simple fact that with differential calc, you are simply either looking for the slope of a curve, or where it flattens out, and for integral calc, it’s the area under a curve. It’s rally easy to lose sight of the basic idea when you are up to your eyeballs in symbols. If you get lost, step back, try to draw or visualize the curve, and eyeball it to see if what you are looking for make sense.
Lotsa luck! I took Calculus 101 three times before I passed it, many years ago. Obviously, math is not my strong suit.

Try to check out “The Calculus Problem Solver” from the library. Thousands of problems worked out step by step. It helped me quite a bit until I git it through my thick skull what a function was. Good luck.
