The Soundboard: Pound of Sound

Week 4

Looks like you’ve gained some weight. Actually, my hope is that your CD collection has done so.

This week we’ll begin hearing from my favorite of the Hammond B3 musicians, Big John Patton

In 1966 he released the album Got A Good Thing Going, with Grant Green on Guitar, Richard Landrum on Congas and Hugh Walker on Drums.

The first track I’m loading up is, at least in my twisted little world, the song that the band was playing when all hell broke loose at the club described in The Hollies’ song Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.

Soul Woman (7:40)

This next bit of tunage has got more giddyap than Hi-Ho-Silver, my friend. It was written by both John Patton and Grant Green, very likely right there in the Van Gelder Studio that April night.

The Yodel (8:15)

I would like to let those of y’all whom I wrote to about the Pound of Sound that asked to link to these posts, that as of this week, my bandwidth has been metered and checked, and you may link to this post and next week’s if you feel the need to do so.

Oh, and because the aforementioned weight problem y’all are getting, I’m shorting you an ounce this week. Just cutting back a little so that I don’t send you into a musical diabetic shock.
