Everyone in the area was hanging their heads low when the story of the vandalizing of an interracial couple’s home came across the wires.

EVERETT, Wash. — The 16-year-old boy whose family’s south Everett house was ransacked and defaced with racial slurs has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Police said the boy and two friends painted a swastika and “KKK” on the walls April 12 to divert suspicion in a burglary.
The teens were arrested Monday, and Sgt. Boyd Bryant said investigators suspected it wasn’t a hate crime because one of the teens had previously pawned property stolen from the home.
Police said the boy recruited two others to take part in trashing the house, a 16-year-old friend and a 19-year-old transient who lived with the family for a time.
The 16-year-old was tripped up by an untouched China cabinet, police said. The boy told the other teens not to disturb sentimental items in the cabinet.
The son and his friends are jailed for investigation of burglary and malicious mischief.
The mother, Crissy Kitchell, who is white, and her boyfriend, Wes Washington, who is black live at the home with eight children. On Saturday, dozens of volunteers gathered to help clean up the mess.
The kid should be tried under the same “Hate Crimes� statute that any other perpetrator would have been. If the family doesn’t like it, that is just too damn bad. Slapping this kid on the wrist will only reaffirm his supremacy over them.
