Opposite Ends of a Spectrum

A McLaren parked next to my F350 the other day.

Even in Day-Glo Orange, that is one nice-looking vehicle.

In a Laboratory Once Upon a Time, at work was a Doctor named Frankenstein

We’ve all borne down hard on a ratchet* working on an engine or the like. Now I know what it feels like to be on the receiving end. I tell you what, it feels pretty weird.

Got a dental implant the other day; doc screwed a thing very like the one pictured into my jaw with a cute little dental ratcheting torque wrench.

*heh.

The solution is to live in a barn

I truly hate the “great room”/open kitchen concept as much as I am certain their originators were not introverts, but I can see that concept being extended to eliminate room partitions altogether as the population ages, to preserve memory.

The Dilliyo

My new schedule for school now involves multiple days of “Fab Shop”.

This does not mean a special time where we go get our hair and nails done. Instead, I am staying at school until around 2130 learning how to use the tools of your average (or above average) metal fabrication shop, as well as how to draw up and interpret blueprints and generally make cool shit out of various materials, focusing on metals.

This is only the second week, so we’re just completing our first project for the school and learned how to use floor mounted tools to bend, fold and twist steel into various shapes.

However, because I start class at 0800 and have only a two hour break between the normal end the school day and the start of Fab Shop, and then getting to unass to area well after dark, I am left with little energy and even less time for blogging.

But I do not want to work in a ship yard or on a construction site. I want to work in manufacturing. Preferably in a small to medium machine shop. So this is quite important to me right now. I will do my best to be better at future posting on Sunday and Wednesday nights starting next week. But this is probably all from me until Friday night.

As a consolation prize, I give you these.

Smart Business Move

Too bad it is a county in the State of Oregon deferring costs on all of America.

Obamacare will change the way Multnomah County pays for jail inmates’ medical treatment

Backers have promoted the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid expansion as a way to reduce health care costs for many Americans.

Multnomah County officials expect national health care reform to cut the county’s medical bills, too.

By enrolling jail inmates in nationally subsidized healthcare — best known as “Obamacare” to both the President and his critics — the county could bill the federal government for the cost of providing some of them medical care.

County health department officials briefed Multnomah County commissioners on the issue this week.

In addition to saving the county money, enrolling inmates in Obamacare would also mean a significant percentage will now have insurance when their jail stay is done.

Great, except that anyone with an IQ high enough to understand that putting their finger in their own eye hurts knows that what County is doing is entering the inmates into the Medicaid system.

So the good folks of say, Texas, will be paying for the shiv wound received by a Portland area convicted rapist.

So enjoy that.

New Acronym — CITBN

I did not attend this presentation; I found it while researching other items it discusses.

Thus, I cannot verify whether or not the mention of “Chip-in-the-back-of-the-neck” (page 7)  as one of several “emerging payment technologies” was a joke.

What a deal!

Alternate title: How to get $1.50 worth of stuff at the Dollar Store

If you calculate the cost of defensive hollow points these days, you’ll get the title.

An armed man entered a Orrville, Ala., Dollar General on Thursday, waved his gun in the air and threatened to kill everyone, AL.com reports. Though motive is unclear, he never got the chance to hurt anyone because a customer carrying a concealed handgun neutralized him with a deadly shot.

Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman Jr. told WSFA-TV that the gunman held a cashier and customer at gunpoint, forcing them toward a break room area. It was at this point that the customer reportedly drew his firearm and shot the suspect one time in the chest. The entire incident took less than five minutes, police say.

The store should, at the very least, give credit for an item and a half.

More Tunage

For those who weren’t exactly pleased with my musical selections last week (yes, I got emails), here is a substitution.

In 1972, Joe Walsh was done with the James Gang but not ready for a full-on solo album, so he got together with some pals and they called themselves “Barnstorm”.

If you think “A young Joe Walsh tries to be Neil Young”, you’ll have this album figured out and know why you should hop on Amazon and buy it right fucking now.
