Weekender

I have long found myself needing some kind of slight noise to fall asleep, and as of late it has been the Science Channel’s show How It’s Made.

The other night they were covering the building of this neat little number

Which, as you can see, is a convertible teardrop trailer.

It is called the Alto Safari Condo and you can see it here.

The nice part about these is that they have a dry weight of approximately 1700lbs and have a super-low drag coefficient. Which means they can be towed by a midsize sedan/wagon/Jeep and can sleep four (if they’re good friends).

And we can finally get them in the U.S..

The downside is that the super-light build materials and build location (Quebec) means it is a pricey piece of kit.

Still, being able to Jeep in and sleep off the ground might be worth a price close to the sale price.

Gun Injuries Prevalent in Children

Researchers found that 7,391 young people under age 20 were admitted to U.S. hospitals in 2009 because of firearm injuries – about 20 a day. More than 6% of them died from their injuries

What is the number if you removed 16, 17, 18 and 19 year olds?

It must be pretty low if they have to go all the way to 19 to get something “shocking”.

Sorry, but if you are old enough to legally drive a car and “pre-register” to vote, you are not a “child”.

It really is pretty good. It must be nice to have written and recorded something that you can watch so many people have to perform really hard to keep up with.

And the lady shown at the 3:55 mark has been building her stairway for years.

By the grace of (insert your preferred deity here), Heart are locals and have been doing Zep covers for more than a few decades, but I still like them doing their own stuff best.

Except for this badass piece of work. They own this now.

These folks need to record an album of like material.

Why not?

Proposed new law in Colorado: You have to submit to hours of mandatory relationship and parental counseling before you can receive your marriage license.

The guy at the link doesn’t like the idea.

On the other hand, I am of a mind to endorse the idea and even wonder if it should be enacted in every state.

To put my reasons simply, if you are going to submit to the government the ability to “sanctify” or “approve” of your relationship with another person, then the government is going to set up some restrictions/qualifications.

Now don’t get me wrong. I don’t like to submit to just about anything involving any government, but most folks haven’t thought of the idea of a marriage license as actual “submission”. But it is high time they start.

This was and is my only problem with the state of the same-sex marriage debate. If the GLBT community would have approached it from the angle of actually “Getting government out of our relationships and bedrooms!” instead of “approve of my relationship and who I have sex with!”, they would have found a strong ally in both the large and small L Libertarian community. Instead, most of us pretty much just grabbed some popcorn and watched the special interest groups and political parties on both sides spark off.

When you make the tyranny blatant, people might actually see it. I hope that this is the angle that the backers of the bill are taking.

Correction

I was wrong about there not being any photos taken of the gravel pit trip taken by Scott and I and some friends of ours.

Our friend Don brought his 12yr old daughter out for the morning, so of course we let them shoot our AR’s.

She has Scott’s “light rig” and Don has my XM177 clone (specs for either upon request).

Don’s daughter is a trooper. She went from a 22/45 to a full size DAO 9mm to the AR’s to an 1187 to an 870 without missing a beat. I think having to pry the smile off her face in time to go to school the next day might have been the most painful part for her.

When they want folks to submit to “testing”

Individuals seeking a permit to buy firearms in New Jersey would have to submit results of a psychological evaluation before they could buy a gun, under a bill introduced yesterday in the Legislature by West New York Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez.

The measure would also require applicants to have an on-site inspection and evaluation of the household where the firearm would be located.

The bill was one of 18 introduced yesterday by several lawmakers in the state Senate and Assembly intended to curb gun violence in New Jersey, which already has some of the nationâ€™s toughest gun laws.

In addition to Jimenezâ€™ mandatory psychological screenings, bills call for home inspections for those who want to buy firearms; having prospective buyers list the members of their households with mental illnesses; requiring sales of ammunition be face-to-face; and further shrinking bullet magazinesâ€™ capacities from 15 to five or 10.

New Jersey is easily already in the Top 10 of states with unjust (and likely unconstitutional) firearms laws, and now she wants to pick the brains and search the homes of law abiding citizens.

As Joe would say, this will be used as evidence against her at her trial.

When Idiots Attack

Scott and I and some other co-workers (former co-workers to me) attempted to go shooting today, gravel pit style, but were stopped by people so stupid it is amazing that they were able to tie their shoes and figure out a door knob so they could leave the house.

The pit is approximately 110 yards long from the point where the jersey barriers were and where we had to park our trucks. The barrier area was approximately 50 feet wide and the pit is sort of a diamond shape fanning out from there.

We arrived first and set up our bench for some zeroing about 10 yards into the pit so that we could zero at 100. Everything was going fine for about 90 minutes, which is when a Jeep YJ and a 4Runner rolled up and two guys pile out of each vehicle. They asked for a target break. We obliged.

They walk back from setting out their targets and signal that we can start firing again, so we did. A few rounds in, we start hearing shots coming from our left. And from behind us. We turn to look and these guys are back at the jersey barriers, firing, and using the barriers as rests.

We stop shooting, and yell over for them to please come forward to what was clearly established by us as “The Firing Line”. They respond that they have no bench and that they want to keep shooting from where they were currently at. We respond with our being uncomfortable with that. They respond with a general “Don’t worry about us. We’re safe.”

Scott and I and our friends all look at each other and visually agree that trusting them to be safe is a dumb idea and pull back to the barriers, leaving the bulky items such as the bench 10 yards out. We try doing some limited firing at the close in targets from there but find it less than ideal. The idiots call for a target break and we call it a day and pack up.

These four idiots were all over 50 and should know better.

As we were rolling out of the pit I regretted not getting any photos of Scott and I to post here. Now I’m regretting not having taken pictures of the idiots and their vehicles to post here.
