Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

As of this day, I am of an age equal to the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything.

So, in celebration…

180 bpm gets the heart moving (and the feet too).

And then

There’s this asshole!

Remember the story about the guy who appeared on an episode of “Doomsday Preppers” who said that his disaster plan was to use force against his neighbors to take what he and his family and friends needs to survive?

Turns out, that seems to be his modus operandi, though he’ll only be able to all that looting if he can get out of jail first, since he is a convicted felon who went on cable teevee and displayed his firearms collection.

During a November 2013 episode of the National Geographic Channel TV show “Doomsday Preppers,” Tyler Smith described his plans to commit armed robbery and was filmed loading and firing two rifles on his property in Buckley, Pierce County.

Though he may claim he was preparing for doomsday, there was one problem: Smith, 26, is a convicted felon, which makes him ineligible to possess firearms.

He was arrested Wednesday and booked on two counts of second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department.

“His stated plan was not to defend himself but to use weapons he illegally possessed, to rob his neighbors at gunpoint,” Sheriff Paul Pastor said in a news release. “Did he really think that this wouldn’t attract our attention?”

Smith was arrested without incident in Bonney Lake. He recently moved there from the farm where the episode was filmed in March 2013, the sheriff’s department said. Smith has one theft conviction and a conviction for a gross misdemeanor sex offense for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.

And on the next episode of “When idiots attack!”

I have never got into the show, mostly because this guy seems to be typical of the caliber of folks I have seen when I sit through the couple of introductions I have watched. I saw one “prepper” who made sold “survival stoves”. And I am using the term “made” very loosley here.

I had just started my welding course and when I saw the welds on the chimney stack I almost cried. They were standard T-style welds and they were horrible, with slag boogers hanging all over everything. Sure they were around a cylinder, but damn. He probably made them with 6011 welding rod and a Harbor Freight A/C buzzbox, but he could have ground the damn things off, at the very least. And boy, was he proud of them.

Fine New Fiction

FYI to all, our friend Rolf, over at Joe’s place, has put his first story out there for sale on Amazon.

I was one of the proofreaders for the story, and found it a very enjoyable yarn, in a unique format.

Go give him your money & enjoy the tale.  Then badger him for more.

I hope they enjoy their time together

I had to laugh a little inside when I read this

UAW sets up organizing committee at Tesla’s Fremont factory

Tesla is happy to do things differently than other automakers, from the company-owned stores to the all-electric drivetrain. It also doesn’t use union workers at its factory in Fremont, California (the former NUMMI plant, pictured). But now the United Auto Workers (UAW) is testing the waters for representation at the plant, according to a report in the San Francisco Chronicle.

UAW President Bob King has revealed that the UAW has created an organizing committee in Fremont. How this would change things at Tesla – and whether it would be a good or bad thing – is not really known, but it would certainly make the EV company more like the Big Three in this one aspect.

The cars cost so much already that I don’t know how much, if any, the union wages and benefits package will change the sticker price. But if the lawsuits for the car’s batteries catching on fire don’t kill this company, the UAW probably will.

Getting Back to Business

You probably already saw Uncle’s little e-yard sale going on over the weekend. In a similar vein, I also have some gunny stuff that will be for sale in the not too distant future.

Unlike Uncle’s selection, I do not have a few items that will all fit in a shoe box. I have a couple of 16 gallon tubs with locking lids full of stuff.

Also unlike Uncle’s sale, my plan is not to post it all here (though I may do some package deals with the more choice bits). I will be renting a couple tables at a few of the local gun shows (Centralia, Puyallup, and Enumclaw) this March/April.

So keep tuned in for that in the upcoming weeks once I get it all sorted. Prices are likely to be stupid low (plus shipping, if you’ll be needing it shipped) because I seriously don’t need this stuff. Some of it is for firearms I no longer own and some of it is stuff I’ve upgraded from, and I need the space, so it needs to go.

I am also looking down the tunnel at a bright light that should contain a remarkable quantity of reloading stuff from an unnamed source. Most likely older stuff, but since I don’t have it in my hands, I cannot say exactly.

I may need a hand or two behind the table at these gun shows, so if you’ve ever wanted to get in early (and stay late) at a gunshow, I’ll post that info later as well.

And speaking of going to the shows, I was at the Centralia show on Sunday and now have everything I need to load up some very special cartridges for a work in progress. Patience, grasshopper. Think “and you’re going to put that in front of your face” and you’ll be near the answer.

Wardens of the State

The old trope about “only police officers should be allowed to have guns” gets busted in Florida and New Jersey.

Likewise, the trope that there is no such thing as “a good guy withe a gun” was busted in, of all places, Oregon.

And just like that

Your freedom was diminished.

Any quick perusal of MSM sites during the last couple of weeks of December 2013 would have you find multiple stories on how “lazy”, “do nothing”, and “unproductive” the US Congress was during 2013. They sent only 65 bills to the President’s desk for him to sign, which is 65 too many formy liking. However, the media thinks that government actually does good things, despite all the evidence to the contrary.

Never ones to leave you well enough alone, the federal government’s bureaucrats were busy little beavers during 2013, setting a new record by issuing 3659 new regulations from January 1st through December 31st.

The Obama administration made up for the lack of laws passed in Congress last year, issuing a whopping 3,659 rules regulations, crushing claims that Washington isn’t doing anything.

Only 65 public laws were signed by President Obama in 2013, meaning that his government issued an average of 56 new regulations for every one, a record high ratio, according to the annual analysis by the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

The surge in regulations has led critics to charge that Congress is now a bystander to federal regulatory agencies.

Politicians like it when the ideologues get their thang on writing “Plus 1’s”. There are no votes on record to have to face tough questions about during the next election cycle, and less time writing complicated laws no one else in Congress is going to bother reading anyway means more time to rub them elbows.

IntraLasik FTW

I had the all-laser eye surgery two days after New Year’s, and went from this (which is like 20/700 in the worst eye)

– to 20/20 the next day, and now 20/15 one week out.

I had no idea women got so cold in winter!

Seriously, I still can’t get over how seeing with my own eyes has a quality to it completely missing from vision corrected with contact lenses, not to mention glasses. I am still trying to describe it–almost like an expanded peripheral vision, but that’s not all of it. I think it’s the absence of, when wearing glasses, the near-constant and almost unconscious repositioning of my head to align the lenses’ sweet spot; and when wearing contacts, the need to blink and make minute muscle contractions in one eye or the other fairly often to get the most precise focus. That’s all gone now. And I can just stand here and… see! Whatever I want! Just by looking at it! Effortlessly!

I could go on, but there’s so much to see. In fact, look, a squirrel!

…actually it’s skunk in my backyard that appears to be bring raped by another skunk, but I just can’t stop watching. I mean, have you ever really looked at a skunk’s pelt? So much detail….

Yes, We Have

Having “gone Galt” myself, it is nice to see I am not alone.

At the Centralia “Fun Show” yesterday, one of the more frequent sales pitches I overheard being used to counter someone saying they can find it slightly cheaper on the interwebs was “but there is no shipping and no sales tax collected here.”

From what I saw, it worked.
