I love my wife…

…and not just for all the usual reasons.

Last night, we were chatting and channel-surfing while waiting for Battlestar Galactica’s season finale to start. We happened across Silverado, and left it running in the background while we talked about other things.

We stopped talking for a bit and watched the scene where the heroes rescue a cash box from a band of thieves while stampeding their horses. The scene ended, and out of nowhere, my wife says, “It would sure be fun to dress up and play cowboy like that.”

So I explained to her about SASS, and how that was a form of adult cowboy dress-up play sweeping the nation, with real guns. She allowed as how that sounded like lots of fun.

Then, in my rapture, I made the mistake of mentioning that this meant we had a whole new category of guns to buy, and she nixed the whole thing.

That’s okay, I’ve got time. She’ll come around.

I’ve Never Heard of Her Before

And this column is probably a good example as to why.

A Cartoon Version of Academia – Froma Harrop

If you need a good laugh this morning, click that link and you’ll read Ms. Harrop’s opinion of David Horowitz’s ‘Academic Bill of Rights’.

First, she tries to compare the right’s disgust with the overwhelming left-wing slant of America’s colleges and universities to the Muslim reaction to the Mohammed cartoons.

What the cultural warriors do is scour this big country for the odd professor who says profoundly stupid anti-American things and turn him into a caricature of liberal academia. They distribute their comic-strip story of a professoriate in full sedition, then implore lawmakers to micro-manage the hiring at colleges.

Unfortunately for Ms. Harrop, that is not actually the Academic BoR at all. One has to wonder if she has even read the thing and how it enables a student to file a complaint against a professor, of any political stripe, who harangues his students in pointless political discussionsand then gives them a lower grade than their classmates who agree with said instructor, without fear of retribution from the instructor.

But I guess actually reading the Acedemic BoR would ruin her point.

Seeing that she couldn’t come up with the required number of words for her column on that single point, she switches up and compares the left-wing slant at universities with the right-wing slant of the upper management at America’s defense contracting companies.

Speaking of corporations: If, as some cultural conservatives insist, politicians should monitor political leanings at universities because they receive government support, why not extend that supervision to all companies accepting taxpayer dollars?

In 2005, Harvard received $500 million in federal research grants, plus a few million more through student aid. But defense contractor Lockheed Martin obtained $6 billion in federal contracts. I want to know how many liberals populate Lockheed’s executive suite.

Yeah, I know; I’d like to get a swig of what this woman keeps in her liquor cabinet too.

Nevermind that students are paying to be instructed, not lectured and indoctrinated politically, while corporate execs, in companies creating any product, are being paid to get a job done (the apple to Ms. Harrop’s orange), she needs to make an equation, no matter how insipid, that will rile liberals into fenzy, and “War Machine” building companies do that job like no other.

So if Horowitz gets his wish to unburden students of Republican / Libertarian persuasions, Ms. Harrop wants liberals appointed to the executive boards of the companies that build ICBMs.

The sixties were not very kind to her, in this fellow’s opinion.

It’s Good to Be Home

Now that I’m back from helping the Kid move into his new place, I’dlike to thank Judge Juggs for his excellent post last weekend. Very tasty, umm, tasteful.

Now, the Kid hasn’t said much about my stay and this is probabyl because I behavedmyself very well and didn’t cause any problems and even lifted a few boxes during the many trips in his truck. Even though there really wasn’t much furniture at either home during my stay, I would like to thank him and his wife for their hospitality while I was there. Except for a day or two, I mostly stayed with new friends I made while in the Seattle-Tacoma area.

Treeda was very hospitable and while not quite as nice as the Occidental Tush Institute’s campus, the courtyard outside her U of W apartment was quite scenic.

Don’t Try This at Home

…or at work, which is where I did it, to my shooting eye, no less.

“It” is toughing out an irritating bit of dirt under your left contact lens during a four-hour meeting, and making matters worse by rubbing the eye with your bacteria-covered fingers. Then compounding the error that evening by collapsing into bed without removing the lens, giving the bacteria time to grow and multiply. Then trying to tough it through the next day with a throbbing, beet-red eyeball.

By the time I got to the eye doctor, I was dangerously close to an ulcerated cornea or worse. The doc bitched me out for doing this to myself, then said, “do you want to save your eye?”

I nodded vigorously. I didn’t (and don’t) know if he was being overly dramatic in order to get me to comply with his instructions, or if I was really that bad off.

“Okay, then,” he said, “you’re not going to sleep for the next two days. Starting now, you’re going to put two of these drops (Vigamox TM, a kewl new antibiotic) in your eye every fifteen minutes for the next six hours, then every thirty minutes for the next eighteen hours. At that point you come back here for a follow-up appointment. If everything goes well, we’ll cut you down to two drops every hour for another twenty-four.”

I followed the instructions, somehow managed to catch some sleep in a few thirty-minute chunks, and just got back from the follow-up earlier this evening. The eye is much better and the doc’s pleased with the success of the aggressive treatment. I have another follow-up tomorrow morning.

I’ve worn contact lenses for more than twenty-five years. Recently, I have allowed some laxity to seep into my daily eyewear routine. No more!

This is my shooting eye! And Boomershoot’s only six weeks away…. Scary.

“Recycling” Update

Just wanted to say thank you for your responses to the “Recycling” sticker design, especially the linkage from Mr. Completely who, in turn, got linked by Headmistress Sondra K.

I’ll be spending time this weekend checking out CafePress and some other stuff folks emailed me.

In the meantime, if there are any suggestions about any different colors you’d like to see or if you like just as it is, let me know because when I make up my mind about who I’m going with, that’ll be what I go off of.

Have a good day all.

BTW, MR. C has his Rimfire Roundup post for the week up. Check it out.

The Soundboard: Box Stock

I’m low on time this week so I’ll be handing out mystery tunage by mystery artists. Feel free to guess the who, what and where in the comments but I am also low on prizes so there’ll be no prizes for those who guess correctly.

I’ll give you some clues:

1. All of the artists names are mentioned in the tune and they each have one initial in the title of the tune.

2. This tune is nearly exactly what you can expect when the Bronx, Queens and Tokyo get together.

3. One of the artists is well known for being told ‘He’s Just a Friend’.

4. One of the artists jungled up a tune about how ‘The Groove is in the Heart’

5. The other one played a supremo hitchhiker in 2004 and has another movie in theaters right now with a box office king.

So here you go:

BMT

Next week, the remix will be entered in the “Pushing 40Hz ’till it hurts” category.

Inspired

In the comments of the recycling post from yesterday, Mr. Completely delivered us a slogan:

Recycling means reloading your own ammo

He said it may not be a very good bumpersticker, especially for the vehicle I drive to work, but as with most things at my work, I care very little about management’s opinions, especially about what I attach to my truck.

But how about you? Would you put something like that on your vehicle?

Because I have hamfisted my way through a PS program to creat these two things (click for bigger pics)

ReloadRecycle1.jpg      ReloadRecycle2.jpg

They’re very rudimentary and could be refined with some suggestions from you, the peanut gallery. I have never used any of the online printing folks (CafePress, etc) so I can look into that if there are enough people interested in maybe buying one or two of either or both.

Leave any tips, ideas or how many you’d like in the comments.

I’m scratching my head here

For those not here for previous discussions on the topic of abortion, please see the disclaimer below the fold.

As I understood it, the whole position of the left for abortion is that it is a “Women’s Right to Choose” (also known as “Women’s Reproductive Rights”).

Now with the South Dakota bill that was signed and passed, making the majority of abortions illegal, the pro-abortion folks are on the defensive and are filing their lawsuits, which is exactly what the SD Lawmakers wanted. So off to court they will go.

But one of the craziest things I saw when I returned to the blogosphere this week was seeing Atrios at Eschaton endorsed and then Kos at the dailyKos linking and agreeing the postition of giving men the right to say whether or not the birth will happen:

It’s time for more men to understand that getting rid of legal abortion increases by quite a lot the chance that one drunk evening will lead to 18 years of child support payments.

They are, of course, doing this to try and rally more support for the pro-abortion viewpoint, but with the last thirty-plus years of hearing from the left that “It is a Woman’s Choice”, I got somewhat confused at their choice of argument.

They Need to Call In a Shaman

Washington’s Puyallup Indian Tribe has made deals with demons; the demons being the State of Washington and the City of Tacoma.

As you already probably know, as of January, the entire state I live in went “Smoke Free”, banning lighting up in public buildings and withing 25ft of the doors and windows that access these areas.

Now, I say the entirety of the state, but the federally protected Indian Reservations are exempt, meaning their alcohol and tobacco shops and, most importantly, their casinos, are exempt.

The tribes dumped big money into the Citizen’s Initiative campaign to help get the smoking ban passed because they knew that markets being what they are, the smokers would stop going to their normal hangouts and wing-it on down to their Slot-Machine Teepees.

Unfortunately for the Puyallup Indian Tribe, they made a deal with the City of Tacoma a couple years back so that they could move their ‘riverboat casino’, the Emerald Queen, from a waterfront spot in the Port of Tacoma to a location much closer to Interstate-5, and therefore closer to the palefaces who are so willing to leave their wampum at the Slot-Machine Teepee.

Now the Pierce County Health Agency has begun issuing citations for smoking at their Fife location, saying that since the casino isn’t on federally protected land, the tribes now have to stop letting people smoke in that establishment.

And as is normal in America, a court case in ensuing.

So I’m going to attempt to break this down into language that maybe the Puyallup tribal leaders may understand:

You makem deal with palefaces to move your teepee to fairer land. Then you gave heap money the Sons fo the Great White Father to help them bind the hands of their fellow palefaces who makem big stink with their smokesignals. You hoped that handing them money paper to them would help you to gather wampum as far as the eye could see. You did not notice that all these palefaces speak with forked tongues and you have soiled the honor of your tribe.

You now hope that a paleface witchdoctor with heap paperwork will cure your tribe, but he will not. Your tribe will not be happy until your return to your own land and learn to stop dealing with the Sons of the Great White Father who treat you like buffalo chips.

Trashing Market Forces

When Rivrdog wrote the day before he came home from his nearly month-long vacation to Mexico and then Arizona, he posted on life in the desert for the uninitiated is here.

One of the things I read in there set me off on a tangent that I hadn’t been to for quite some time. As you probably know, Seattle was the first major city in the nation to pass a mandatory recycling program. And as you probably also know, I work for one of the largest trash haulers in the country at their Seattle operations facility. I made sure to distance myself from Seattle Residential pick-ups quite some time ago as I knew they’d do something I considered stupid and I didn’t want to wait until then to make my move, so the majority of my work is done for our other contracts in the towns surrounding area. But I do work closely enough with the Seattle folks to be able to give out the following info and then make some comments afterwards.
