Scraping Bottom

The worst news the anti-firearms rights bigot can come up with this week so far is beyond the realm of stupid.

A violent felon was shooting at something in his suburban Dallas backyard and with a gun he was not supposed to have because there are laws against that and all, and as you can guess, hits a child in the house behind his.

The leftosphere is attempting to make folks go apeshit and try to paint this guy as your average law abiding firearms owner doing what average law abiding firearms owners do.

If you bother to click on the story, you will get the whole of it. Oddly enough, both the sites I saw who featured this tale made the link to the actually report linked above so small, it would be easy to skip over it.

Government Does Not Prioritize

Unless it suits them.

The House R’s have signed onto a bill that would force the EPA to stop trying to do social work with regards to CO2 by forcing them to pick a Top 10 Most Dangerous Substances list of sorts.

Having no good excuse as to why some focus might be a good idea, the eco-socialists have pulled the race card out of their wallet and are trying to get it read.

But, you know how sometimes you put the wrong side of the card through the machine. Yeah, that’s what they’re doing.

House Republicans are being accused of “environmental racism” by an environmental group that argues GOP efforts to reform decades-old chemical laws would disproportionately harm minority groups.

At issue is draft legislation backed by Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) that would require the Environmental Protection Agency to focus on chemicals that pose the greatest risk to the public in enforcing environmental protections.

Shimkus argues his bill would free up resources to focus on the most dangerous chemical threats, but the liberal Environmental Justice Health Alliance says it would end up hurting minority groups by moving resources away from policing the threats in their neighborhoods. That, in turn, would increase the risk that they could develop cancer, asthma, childhood leukemia, infertility and birth defects, among other health problems.

In a press release, the group said the bill would promote what it called “environmental racism.”

“This bill harms communities of color disproportionately,” Michele Roberts, co-coordinator of the Environmental Justice Health Alliance, said in an interview. “Most of these chemicals are either manufactured, stored in, or disposed of in primarily communities of color.”

Could someone take a moment to tell these guys that keeping the EPA from wasting time regulating CO2 gives them more time to keep an eye on actual dangerous chemicals.

Of course, they will argue that CO2 is THE most dangerous chemical. While expelling CO2.

They swallowed the hook

And this one is going to tear all the way out.

Europe’s dogged pursuit of a solar- and wind-powered future has jacked up energy prices for households and industry alike. For families, it has meant higher monthly power bills—a tax felt most keenly by the poor. For businesses, it has even farther-reaching implications. As the EUobserver reports, more than a hundred leaders of European industry are warning that these rising costs are threatening the EU’s economic recovery.

What? Don’t they teach Austrian Economics in Austria anymore?

Some people saved a few bucks

Apparently, this is the best news they can come up with for Obamacare coverage.

No word yet from the MSM about the larger number of folks whose spending went down because they’re costs went up.

Only Two?

The Russia Today network (aka: the latest propaganda arm of the Putin plutocracy) lost a pair of anchors this week over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Former RT-America anchor, Liz Wahl:

“As a reporter on this network I face many ethical and moral challenges especially me personally coming from a family whose grandparents came here as refugees during the Hungarian revolution, ironically to escape the Soviet forces,” she told network viewers, immediately following a report claiming that the new Ukrainian government, which ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, is composed mainly of fascists and neo-Nazis. “I’m very lucky to have grown up here in the United States. I’m the daughter of a veteran. My partner is a physician at a military base where he sees every day the first-hand accounts of the ultimate prices that people pay for this country. And that is why personally I cannot be part of a network that whitewashes the actions of Putin. I am proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth and that is why after this newscast I’m resigning.”

Former RT-America anchor, Abby Martin:

A TV presenter working for a Kremlin-funded channel who spoke out against Russia’s military invasion in Ukraine live on air could be sent by the broadcaster to Crimea to “better her knowledge” of the situation.

In an off-message tirade, Abby Martin, a Washington-based American news anchor for Russia Today, shocked mostly pro-Russian viewers by announcing she “cannot stress enough” how strongly she felt about presence of its troops in Crimea, saying “Russia was wrong”.

The host addressed the camera in unscripted remarks at the end of the station’s Breaking the Set segment, saying: “Just because I work here, for RT, doesn’t mean I don’t have editorial independence and I can’t stress enough how strongly I am against any military intervention in sovereign nations’ affairs.

“I will not sit here and apologise or defend military aggression,” she went on.

The English-language Russia Today is widely perceived as the voice of the Kremlin, with Reporters Without Borders describing it as a “step of the state to control information.”

The shameful part of this post is that I have to tell you that I found the links above at leftosphere sites. The reason I use the word shameful is that those very same sites were linking heavily to RT-America (almost as often as they link to Al Jazeera America) until just before the invasion.

Anyone think that they will take advantage of their new found knowledge and change their behavior when linking to anti-US news reports from foreign sources?

Didn’t think so.

When reality doesn’t fit your worldview

Challenge Reality!

That is what Stephanie Coontz does in this piece for CNN.

She claims to be challenging the idea that graduating from high school, working hard and getting married before you have children will very likely keep you out of poverty.

To challenge this idea, first she separates the three things and lays out statistics for each of them. She never looks at the number when they are combined. She also whips out her best anecdotal evidence, forgetting that the plural of anecdote is “fact”.

You will not find it beyond belief that she teaches at the infamous Evergreen State College, widely renowned for its disdain for reality.

You’ll only be surprised

If you’ve never listened to him speak before.

Charles Koch, one half of the demonized Koch Brothers, talks about government subsidies to businesses.

Why I’ve Been Mostly Quiet

On January 1st the wife and I took a drive into the Sierras on a whim to look at a property. This despite my ten-year-plan’s endpoint of a retreat in the Wallowa Valley.

Suffice it to say my thinking on viable retreat locale locations shifted to include the remote Sierras. We bit the bullet and every weekend since has involved moving stuff up to our new spot in the hills.

So imagine my surprise and pleasure to read this piece. It’s actually rather remarkable how closely this woman’s description of the geography of her retreat matches my own. I wonder if we’re neighbors?
