Let’s talk this out

On Friday’s quote of the day, in the comments section, RNS reader Grumpy Old Ham said he wanted to talk about something Rivrdog said there on the subject of “GunBlogging”. He suggested Paratus, RD’s other blog, but willing to do it here.

So let’s talk this out.

I gun blog for a couple reasons, neither of which are to be a braggart.

First up is the relationships that are created and the knowledge shared with fellow firearms owners. Within six months of when I first started blogging I hosted my first “Blogger Blastorama”. Noted attendees were Raging Dave of Four Right Wing Wackos fame, Headmistress SondraK and JR from Knowledge is Power, and Mollbot from the now defunct Morpholine blog.

blastoramalogo11th.jpg

We all met in the burg of Enumclaw, WA and went out near the Mt. Rainier National Park and shot the hell out of two truckloads of pumpkins. We had, quite literally, a blast and the elk ate well after we left.

After that, I would help arrange other Blogger Blastoramas on a monthly basis, stretching from Everett, WA to Portland, OR. Since then, I’ve been working too many hours at night to be able to get up the energy to do more than a couple a year, and even then, I don’t always get a lot of takers due to lower site traffic numbers and blog-folks leaving the area.

But in that year and a half of monthly shooting meet-ups, not only did I have loads of fun, but I can think of over two dozen firearms bought by various Blastorama attendees (including SondraK’s first), and at least eight new shooters off the top of my head.

Well worth the time, the effort and the exposure of myself as an internet gunnie.

I don’t post about the firearms I own to try and deter anyone I piss off from a physical attack. If they have half a brain, they’ll just arm themselves prior to meeting me at their selected location and we’ll test skill-sets.

As for the idea of a gov’t agency using my postings here as knowledge/a reason to search/confiscate, I’m not really worried about that either. Here is a little secret about Washington State: When you buy a pistol at an FFL here, you ARE essentially registering it (does not pertain to long guns). They tie your newly purchased firearm to you driver’s license and/or CCW permit and any traffic officer can ask his dispatcher about what guns you may have in the car (or look it up by themselves if they have an on-board laptop). I have spoken to the CCRKBA, they know about this and have been rebuffed in their attempts to stop it.

The state knows I own firearms. I am probably on whatever “List” they may have, but I have an Ace in the Hole they don’t know about and which I won’t discuss here. I have also, as a youngin, lived through a pair of raids on my father’s house by the BATFE. When I was in my early 20’s, in the wake of the OKC bombing, I was questioned, along with the rest of the practical pistol competition team I was in at the time, about us being “a militia”. While these anecdotes are entertaining, with one of them ending quite humorously, they are also things I am not willing to talk about here beyond these mentions.

Both of these experiences have convinced me that not only are our federal agencies full of raging gun bigots, but that I needed to take steps so as to not get surprised again. I do this partly by being miles above board in any and all dealings with firearms and by not joining shooting clubs run by half-hearted pantywaisted haters of all shooting disciplines except for silhouette and skeet. While I wouldn’t put it past a member of one of the alphabet agencies to lie/falsify evidence, I do know that they would have to work really hard at it in my case.

Basically what I’m saying is that unless you gunblog about illegal modifications or wanting to kill someone, gunblogging gives the gov’t little to no more information than they already have, at least in my experience.

A very positive product of gunblogging is that “They” know that there are hundreds of vocal gun-owning bloggers out there, talking amongst themselves and bringing new folks into the fold. Not “angry” gun owners and not “militiamen”. And I have no doubt in my mind that that scares the piss out of those looking in.

Now, what are your thoughts/questions/concerns/favorite hummous recipies?

RNS Quote of the Day: 11/20/06

Speaking Ill of the Dead Edition

First off though, the quote:

Many people want the government to protect the consumer. A much more urgent problem is to protect the consumer from the government.

Milton Friedman

Mr. Milton Friedman hadn’t even been dead for twenty-four hours when Alan of the NW Progressive Institute blog went on to blame Friedman for stagflation in the 1970’s, calling him “The PT Barnum of Economics”.

Unfortunately, Friedman was wrong, demonstrably wrong, repeatedly wrong, and when his theories were incorporated into policy, as they were in the late 1970s and early 1980s, disastrously wrong.

Alan then goes on to show us just how little he understands the theory of national economics, belittles Friedman’s Nobel Prize, and suggests a Keynesian who he thinks should have won instead.

For those who don’t know the Keynesian theory of economics in detail, Keynesians believe that the government should “Educate” the populace as to what to buy and how to spend, also known as “Indoctrination”. I’ve left a couple unanswered comments over there that you can check out if you would like.

Btw, for those folks who are new here, the NW Progressive Institute are the people who brought Seattle metro locals the harrassment of conservative initiative signature gatherers campaign that I wrote about here.

Lovely folks, aren’t they?

Not to be outdone, Seattle’s uber-left blogger, Goldy of Horse’s Ass, went on to describe Friendman as “the Andy Warhol of post-WWII economics”. You might want to click on this one for a very simple and hilarious reason:

To try and disprove the throey that competition drives innovation and efficiency, Goldy decides to use the example of bloggers and their software vs. spammers, stating that we could all be using software that works dozens of multitudes better in function and quality if it weren’t for spammers making the development companies spend time and money building new anti-spam programs.

He, of course, completely ignores the competition going on between software companies as to whom can develop the best spam blocker. For instance, MT’s old spam program had me making twenty to thirty decisions per day as to what is and isn’t spam, whereas WP’s Spam Karma program only asks me a couple times a week and is 90% correct with the spam it blocks.

I guess that in Goldy’s world, because of spam, there is no competition between email providers where they pimp their ability to block spam.

That must be “The Reality Based Community”.

And just for those folks, I’ll be posting Friedman quotes all the rest of this week.

The Results

Via Rodger Schlong we find that proponents and supporters of Massachusetts’ mandated “Everyone gets Health Insurance” program did exactly what everyone who supports any kind of universal health care coverage plan does.

They lied.

Massachusetts Health Insurance Plan Will Cost $151M More Than Expected, Opinion Piece Says

Officials of Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s (R) administration are “now telling Wall Street that they expect” the state’s new law requiring all residents to obtain health insurance by July 1, 2007, “to be quite expensive,” even though “supporters promised that health insurance could be provided with only a slight increase in expenditures,”

Usually they just lie to themselves, and that is OK by me. This is America, after all.

But whent hey lie to the people, in this case the People of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, that is when I have to speak up.

I don’t like Romney, and this is just one of the reasons.

Motion Machine

I did a little research last night and I can comfortably tell you all that, yes, the gPod works in America.

spankable166.jpg

Miss Elisa, my lovey test subject, fell right out of the chair and didn’t really feel like getting up afterwards.

The Nobel Peace Prize should be given to Mr. Kameda.

As to Phil’s allegations about my lack of an actual scolding, it’s a fair cop. Guilty as charged of “Writing with Flair”.

Why the US will Still be the Only Superpower in 2030

Good points here, by the Futurist.

A Hit and a Miss

So yesterday I went off on Dems and the rising gas prices on the west coast.

It must have been because we were discussing it (damned media conspiracy!), but oil fell to a 17 month low yesterday.

Oil fell toward $55 on Friday, hitting its lowest level since mid-2005 driven by fund selling across commodity markets

So, I was wrong. I guess that the Dems aren’t driving us all into plastic, flatulence powered cars.

Oh wait, let me finish that quoted sentence first

Oil fell toward $55 on Friday, hitting its lowest level since mid-2005 driven by fund selling across commodity markets on concern of an economic slowdown in the world’s largest energy consumer the United States.

When supply is high and stockpiles are stockpiled, the price drops. But when politics and proposed legislation threaten to make shares of commodities worth less than when they were bought, nervous people will sell quickly, to try and beat the big bite. Not so nervous people wait for this to happen and buy the shares up as low as they can get them, which yesterday was $55.25.

Will we see it at the pump? the next couple weeks will tell.

Rumors of my scolding have been thouroughly exagerrated

Despite what the Professor might tell you below, his “firm rebuke” (or whatever he is calling it) went more along the lines of “I bought the album you posted and it is wonderful. Could you post up a song for me?”

And as if I wouldn’t have his requested tunage. John Deacon may look like an accountant, but the guy has written two of the most recognizable arena/anthem rock tunes of the 20th Century.

So ignore what Der Perfesser has to say and just enjoy the scenery and the tunage folks.

The Bass-Board

Well, I see that Phil has been dipping his toes into my subject matter while I was off teaching this week.

I, of course, am speaking of his muscial additions for the gPod on Thursday.

I should have known that word of the product would come out sooner or later. Myself, I’ve had one for almost a month now; a gift from Mr. Kameda himself. Let me just say that, yes, it does work as advertized.

spankable165.jpg

However, while I agree with Phil that his musical selections would absolutely work wonders in the little device, they are just too “New School” for me to enjoy as he suggests.

After a firm scolding about not being consulted on this, I asked him if he had a song which he could post for me as an example of what I have loaded in my gPod file. Of course, he did.

So, as Phil would say: “Here you go!”

Body Language – Queen

Maybe tomorrow I’ll show you some results of the device in America?

RNS Quote of the Day: 11/17/06

Thank you Mr. Friedman.

The only way that has ever been discovered to have a lot of people cooperate together voluntarily is through the free market. And that’s why it’s so essential to preserving individual freedom.

Godspeed
