RNS Quote of the Day: 12/19/06

Crime is a software, NOT a hardware problem.

Boston T. Party – Boston’s Gun Bible (pp 4/18)

Why is it so hard for gun bigots to understand this?

Our Man in the Stan

Whence the electric and cable came back online I hit the emailbox and found some kind words from LT Chad in there. It seems that the USPS was working above and beyond and got the stuff I mailed to him just in time for Christmas.

I did especially enjoy the subject line of his email: “Holy shit of all shits!”

I took that to mean he liked what was sent.

Anyway, in return he sent some pics of his accompanying gentlemen doing what Combat Engineers do in Afghanistan.

Take in some practice time at the range

And act muy macho when doing EOD stuff.

At Boomershoot, there is a point in the day when folks go “Boomer Hunting”. Basically, you go out with your carbine and shoot any Boomers that didn’t get got from the firing line.

But beforehand, Joe warns of the proper distance you should be from the Boomers in order to avoid being hit by debris. While it is a safe distance, it has, at times, been called “Entertainingly Close” .

I do believe that the gentlemen in the above pic could be considered “Entertainingly Close” to the blast in the background.

Final Note

An addendum to my storm posts from yesterday:

First, and most importantly; at last count, we had ten people giving a “yea” vote to my reposting of the “By Ourselves, For Ourselves” series. I’m pretty sure that is close to the whole readership, so they will be reposted. Thank you all for your responses. I’ll try and get the first ones up before the new year for y’all, but it may take longer as I’ve got the inlaws arriving tomorrow and staying for the holidays and a couple minor repairs to make on the hizouse.

Next up, I know this will come as a shock to most of you, but Seattle liberals are whiny bitches.

Seattle’s uber-left-wing blogger, Goldy of HorsesAss.Org

I’ve gotten a couple emails and comments from readers telling me to quit my whining… that I should have just been better prepared. But I’m not sure how much better prepared I could have been. I’ve got a wind-up radio and some candles and a couple flashlights and plenty of food. And with the dead pear tree that blew down in my yard, I have plenty of well-seasoned firewood. Unfortunately, what I don’t have is a fireplace in which to burn it.

I suppose I could have bought myself a generator to power the blower on my oil furnace, but for a city dweller, that just seems like overkill. It’s not like I’m living on some island or out in the country where the occasional power outage is the price you pay for the beauty and peace that comes from such isolation. I live in the middle of a major American city, and it is reasonable to expect the basic infrastructure to function.

Buying a generator is overkill because he lives in “a major American City”. What a fooking whiny idiot. Maybe he should live in the area governed by his favorite politician, Ron “Tax to the Max” Sims and see what it is like when a truly incompetent government doesn’t give a rat’s ass about your home’s elecricity status.

On a similar subject, whereas my joke yesterday about Gregiore hating white people was a play on the Kanye West statement during the Katrina aftermath, my accompanying statement about her sending state services was part of the joke. I have no idea if she even sent state folks out to help. Sorry it sounded as if I was whining, I was just trying to bring “teh funny”. Now you know why I don’t write sitcoms.

However, I do know that the areas in King County that have waited the longest for a return of the electricity, the south and east suburban and rural portions, do vote heavily Republican. So, I guess that the more accurate, though less funny, statement would have been “Gregiore hates White Republican People”.

And lastly, I’m looking for another couple of those Jump Boxes that I wrote of yesterday. Sadly, it looks as though Home Depot, the manufacturer of the “Husky” brand name items, no longer makes them, though I’ll be going to the source shortly after the new year to confirm that. I’ll let you know what I find out.

Of Welfare and History

They got a little taste of government cheese a couple years ago.

And now they’ve come back for more.

A group of about 300 Mazahua Indians briefly seized a water treatment plant on Mexico City’s western outskirts Wednesday and temporarily cut off one of the main sources of water for the metropolis of 18 million people, the National Water Commission said.

The protest was motivated by demands for more government development aid, local media reported.

(snip)

In September 2004, the same group staged a similar protest, blocking chlorine deliveries but not stopping the water supply. They were demanding damage payments for reservoir overflows that damaged crops, as well as money for rural development projects and drinking water systems for their own communities.

In late 2004, the government gave them almost $120,000 in damage payments, promised to build water systems for them and gave them grants for thousands of Christmas tree seedlings to plant for income.

Notice that there were no claims about “damage payments” this time around.

Maybe Dave Neiwert is right, along with Traci Ardren and Julia Guernesey? Maybe it would have been better for European settlers to leave the primitive cultures alone to slowly sacrifice each other into extinction instead of bringing our societies to theirs?

You all know how I hate to subject anyone to socialism.

In case you don’t want to follow the link, Neiwert goes on a tear about how Mel Gibson’s movie Apocolypto portrays the natives as hyper-violent. Nor does he or Ardren or Guernesey like how the movie ends with the Conquistador’s arrival.

Somebody call the Whaaa-mbulance. They’ve been assaulted with historical facts and need a transfusion of fresh revisionism, STAT!!!

She’s a Real Punt-er

Christine Gregiore, (Barely) Governor of Washington, decided to leave it up to the people of Seattle as to whether the Alaskan Way Viaduct should be replaced with a tunnel or knocked down and rebuilt.

The debate between the two chioces has been raging for months, with ideas such as knocking it down and NOT replacing it and/or building a raised motorway over the water and around downtown Seattle and/or double-deck Interstate 5 to handle the viaduct’s capacity trying to fight their way into the discussion.

The main problem is this: The viaduct shouldn’t even have traffic flowing on it as it is unstable from both age and the damage it took from the last earthquake a few years back. But instead of telling people the truth and shutting it down, they have a weight limit on it and have done the obligatory “temporary repairs” so that folks feel hunky-dory about driving on it.

All of the options are going to have their own price tag, with the two most popular and expensive options being replacement and the tunnel, and therefore they are the only ones to be on the ballot.

While I would like to bag on Gregiore for not being decisive, I really can’t because she is leaving up to a vote, which is the right thing to do. Granted, it should be a vote of the whole state and not just the people of Seattle, because the whole of the state is going to end up paying for it in either the money spent out of the budget from the feds or, when (not “if”) the project goes over-budget, and money is taken out of the general transportation fund.

Personally, if I could have a guarantee that it wouldn’t go over budget and be another “Big Dig” sized failure, I’d like to see the viaduct gone from the city skyline and a tunnel. But I can’t so it won’t.

My second favorite option is to, again, eliminate the viaduct and double-decker Interstate 5 as it goes through downtown. This is the 21st Century and it can be done. The collector distributor lanes would have to first be exapnded to handle the capacity, but even with that modification, the cost would be less than a new viaduct, AND traffic would move through downtown like never before.

My main problem with building a new viaduct is not just that it is ugly, its that it is part of state highway #99. While Hwy 99 does run up the majority of the west coast, as does Hwy 101, to my knowledge, the states are responsible for it’s maintenance. Spending federal dollars on a state highway is wrong and if the state cannot afford to repair/replace parts of it state highways, it should eliminate them and not fall back onto the fed to cough up the cash.

Senator Patty “Osama bin Laden builds daycares” Murray has used her postion as the highest ranking Democrat on the Senate Transportation Appropriations Committee to score Washington some fed-trans cash to help pay a goodly portion of knocking down and replacing the viaduct. Any extra funding for over-runs or the likes of a tunnel has to come from the people of Seattle (or, as the city government of Seattle likes to call them “The People of Washington”).

About the only thing funny about this whole situation is that Gregiore chose to go public with her decision to punt on last Friday, when over a million people in the state were without power.

Dare to be Stupid: 12/19/06

For once I agree with a group of college Democrats.

A Washington State University assistant professor who used a vulgar racial term during a heated political dispute with Democrat students was “immature” and “thoughtless,” but his actions did not constitute discrimination, a new report concludes.

The report was given to the parties involved in the dispute, and a copy was released Tuesday by Dan Ryder, the student who complained to campus officials, saying he had been insulted.

The [protest] drew a crowd of protesters who engaged in heated arguments with College Democrats, and the videotaped showdown garnered national attention, especially on liberal radio and television broadcasts.

During the dispute, Ryder said Streamas, an assistant professor of comparative ethnic studies, called him a “black (solid waste)-bag.”

College Democrats demanded that Streamas be fired for saying that, and have said the incident was an example of bias.

And it was an example of exactly that. However, the university administration disagreed.

University President V. Lane Rawlins said last week that Streamas would be reprimanded, but not fired.

“One utterance of a faculty member in the heat of discussion is not the kind of thing for which you terminate someone,” Rawlins said.

Earlier, Streamas has acknowledged using the term, but said it wasn’t directed at any individual.

The report said it was unwise for Streamas to have made the comment, which it called “immature, intellectually unsophisticated and thoughtless.” But a single such utterance during a robust debate did not, by itself, constitute harassment, discrimination or intimidation, the report said.

Of course it proves that Streamas discriminates against a certain group of people and I am of the opinion that anyone in a seat of power such as the one Streamas occupys should be fired for saying such a thing.

But it’ll never happen for on simple reason: It was the College Republicans who were called “White Shitbags”.

I have modified the news story above from this report in the Seattle PI.

Of course we all know how the above story would have been written had it actually been like what is pseudo-excerpted above.

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/18/06

Over the long, windy weekend I finished reading Boston’s Gun Bible by Boston T. Party. After I finished it during all the spare time I had Thursday night, I started re-reading it with highlighter in-hand. The book has many quotes from people other than the author, and I’ll be using some of them, along with his quotes in this series for the next few weeks.

I do recommend you buy and read this book, cover to cover, even the sections you don’t think apply to you personally, which is why I included a link above. While he is highly opinionated, he has a good deal of information collected in this one place. Like everything else in life, just take him with a grain of salt and everything will be fine.

If he quotes a source and I can find a link to it, I will post that as well.

And now, with the first quote:

According to FSU professor Gary Kleck’s fine book “Point Blank: Guns and Violence in America“, defenders actually fired their guns in fewer tham one out of four cases. Moreover, resistance with a gun was the best tactic to avoid injuries. Below are the percentages of those defnders who were injured.

12.1% – Resisted with a gun

27.3% – Did not resist in any way

29.5% – Resisted with a knife

52.1% – Resisted with bare hands

Those who resisted with a gun were injured less than half of the time of those who offered no resistance! So, if you like to survuve these perilous times, you should learn to fight with a handgun.

I’m back. With a question.

Howdy all!

The posts below this one describe what has happened over the past four days or so. The first post below this one is a review of equipment I found useful and the second one down is the anecdotals. I hope you enjoy them both.

I’ll get back into news and views tomorrow. I just want to get this stuff out of my head before whupping into the grind again.

Let me preface my question with this: In December of 2004 through the first part of 2005, I wrote a series of posts that became their own category called “By Ourselves, For Ourselves”. The series talked about SHTF prep and equipment, among other things, and a number of people then found it helpful and it sparked some rather good discussions around the halls of RNS.

Unfortunately, the parts that remain on the server have had their HTML mangled by the change from Movable Type to WordPress and there are a couple sections that are just plain not there any more. However, I do have a copy of the old back-up and I’m pretty sure that the missing parts are in there.

So, my question is: Would anyone read it if I reposted it?

I know I can, and I’d be happy to do so, but it may take a bit of time to find, fix the links, restore the pics, etc. and I’m not thinking it’d be worth it if no one gave a rat’s patootie.

Let me know in the comments sections of these three posts or via email.

Enjoy!

SHTF Equipment Review

So the storm is raging, it’s dark outside and inside, and you think you’ve got your SHTF gear ready.

Ha, now that’s funny! Because you probably don’t. Even good ol’ Rivrdog didn’t remember to stage his stuff where he needed it and had to drag it in, by himself, during the storm.

My stuff was in the garage. However, I had recently been going through and packing my tools for winter storage and had a dozen or so boxes stacked on top of what I needed to get. Must remember for the future, SHTF gear stays in it’s own stack.

The funny anecdotes and other general descriptions of happenings during the situation are in the post below this one. I’m looking at this little situation we went through as a trial run of sorts, so in this post I’m going to cover the basic areas included in Stay At Home SHTF Gear: Food, Water, Heat, Communications, Light and Weaponry. Even though it was barely 48 hours without electricity, it took a little getting used to.

Follow me below the fold.

She Blew All Night Long

And part of the next day too!

I’m talking about Mother Nature and her long winded and overdue storm, of course. We get one of these storms every decade or so here. The last one was call “The Inauguration Day Storm” because Clinton was sworn in that morning in 1993.

I like to think of it as a punishment for WA and OR helping elect the Serial Lecher.

The one before that was 1981. Of the three, the local meterologists say that this one was the strongest. What the local newsfolk do not say is that the piss poor amount of help from state services proves that (Barely) Governor Gregiore hates White People.

Take cover below the fold!
