Oh, That Liberal Media: Part 964523

Yesterday’s news wires were talking about the imminent declassification of all classified documents over 25 years of age that will take place on Jan 1, 2007.

Second only to the actual facts of the story was the media writers babbling on and on about the Bush Administration NOT stoppping the declassification.

Who gives a rat’s ass why they didn’t and why is it news because they didn’t? It would be Page B-19 news if they DID do it, but though they didn’t the press still gives it hundreds of lines of print.

Oh, THAT Liberal media!

Geeks vs. Nerds

Aaron over at Dad’s Garage came up with what upon reflection I believe to be a very accurate distinction:

In my opinion, nerds are people full of random information that has no bearing on the real world (think Batman vs Superman).

Geeks are people full of random information that has a real bearing on the real world (think cooling fried raviolis off by cutting crossways vs diagonal).

[in short,] Geeks are full of random, yet useful, information. Nerds are full of random and useless information.

Me Likey.

But can one be both? ‘Cause I think I may be.

Where can I get me one of these?

*SB0011 by *Jackson.

Criminal Procedure – Extends circumstances under which there is a legal presumption that a person using deadly force in self defense had a reasonable belief of death and confers civil immunity upon person properly using self defense. – Amends TCA Title 39, Chapter 11, Part 6.

That is language from a bill filed for introduction into the Tennessee Legislature last Wednesday.

My rational, though utterly non-legal, opinion tells me that if I harm an attacker in self-defense that I cannot be sued by family of said attacker after the legal system decides: 1. Not to try me, or 2. I am found not guilty.

I’m sure that David can make much more of it that I, but I cannot see why it could mean anything else.

I also cannot see why this law isn’t on the books in every state. Which is why I asked where I can get one?

The Soundboard: Christmas All Weekend

Well, seeing as how I forgot to post any more tunage again this week, I will just be making everyday Christmas Music Day here at RNS,

Tomorrow and both Saturday and Sunday will have their own tunage which I will leave in there until Tuesday.

For those folks who wish to get away from the excitement just a bit, I may even have a special selection on Monday.

Today’s tunage is more of the bagpipe selections. It is a medley of Joy to the World and I saw Three Ships.

Enjoy!

Is there a Metallurgist in the house?

I need to know the difference between 440C and N690 Stainless Steel.

No rush, I’m just very curious.

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/21/2006

From Shakespeare:

If it be now, ’t is not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all.

–Hamlet, act V, scene 2 (emphasis mine)

If anyone needs a last-minute gift for someone, I’ve been fascinated with 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare. Highly, highly recommended — gripping, entertaining, well-written history at its finest.

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/20/06

When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace.

Luke 11:21 (NKJV)

Boston’s Gun Bible (pp 4/24)

And so is his mind.

I know that I said

That yesterday’s post would be the last one about last week’s storm, but I keep finding stuff that I think you all might find interesting.

First, let me throw some links out there for you:

James Wesley Rawles of SurvivalBlog fame has a book out titled “Retreats and Relocation” . Maybe something good to think about for those who have their small scale disaster plans in order and are ready to plan for the big ones.

Co-worker Paul sent me this link to SurvivalMonkey and a tale which pretty accurately describes what life would be like after a massive EMP blast called “Light’s Out” by someone calling themselves Halffast. Good reading if you have a decent scrolling mouse.

An important notice for folks who may not know this as of yet: SurplusRifle.Com will be going dark in 100 days. Stop by there as soon as you have time and snap up as much info as you need.

As you probably know by now, John from JustSomePoorSchmuck is 911 dispatcher from Oregon. His area was effected by last week’s storm as well. Head on over here to get the take from his end of it.

And back to SurvivalBlog with a first-hand account of the storm from a SeaTacMetro area peace officer posted by JWR.

And as a general announcement, I have found the missing parts of the “By Ourselves, For Ourselves” series and should have it up on the 26th of this month. Think of it as a Christmas Present from me to you.

Lastly, I wanted to wait a couple days to verify all of this before handing it out there, but folks who hand’t brought their Christmas Turkeys before the storm may be out of luck unless the stores in this area get an emergency shipment in soon.

My company is dumping hundreds of tons of tossed frozen food from supermarkets. Apparently, there is a law in Washington State mandating that if a store is without electricity for 18 hours, they have to toss the food, even if it was stored in their main freezer and never got above 28 degrees.

I have been speaking to store managers when they call in for service, and more than a few of them were sending employees out with five and ten gallon fuel cans for diesel to power their generators to try and avoid having to lose their entire frozen food inventory. Some employees drove as far as 30 miles away multiple times to fill up fuel containers.

We have had at least a half dozen six and eight cubic yard containers full of tossed beef, pork, fish and poultry that have been too heavy for the trucks to lift over the top. At least one pitiable sucker has had to climb on/into the box and start tossing the contents over the side into a freshly delivered box. The others we had the available space to hook a cable onto it and tip it over. Then the folks who work at those places have had to shovel the knee deep meat into second boxes.

I did crappy jobs in high school, but none of them involved wading knee deep in dead animal pieces.

The residential drivers are picking up near-record amounts extra cans and bags of trash this week as well from people clearing out the contents of their refrigerators and freezers. Usually it is the week after Christmas that is the heavy one for the resi-guys. Looks as though they’re getting a double shot to close out 2007.

The rats at the dump are going have a very Merry Christmas.

Dare to be Stupid: 12/20/06

I really want to see this actual report to see where the increases are. My guess is that they are in the states that forbid concealed or open carry.

Murders, robberies and other violent crimes reported in the United States jumped 3.7 percent in the first half of the year, continuing a troubling upswing that began in 2005, the FBI said on Monday.

The FBI said law enforcement agencies reported that robberies soared by a startling 9.7 percent, followed by an increase in murders of 1.4 percent and aggravated assaults of 1.2 percent.

While someone mentally sound, such as myself, would blame this on criminals, Jabberin’ John Avarosis blames the increase on, who else, the Bush Administration.

Fighting crime takes a serious committment at the federal, state and local level. Bill Clinton understood that. George Bush doesn’t.

Sadly for Jabberin’ John’s opinion, local burb violent crime has nothing to do with policing at the federal level. But then he will never understand that it is not the feds’s job to give local constabularies federal tax dollars to fund new police personell and equipment. That lies soley at the feet of the local and state government. The effort of policing is one of the few tasks directly given to government. If they can’t do it locally, why would someone hundreds if not thousands of miles away be able to do it?

Although I do love the irony of the folks who bitch about the US becoming a “police state” being the first to demand federal intervention in local police matters.

Crappus Interuptus

Not quite “Life flashing before his eyes like a movie on the stall door”, but close enough for me.

In my opinion, word for word, Og the Neanderpundit does the best crapblogging.

(I’d say “pound for pound”, but that is just not a good visual)
