Apocalypse Now

Think it can’t happen here? First, take a look at what happens when a community dies — the abandoned fire department, courthouse and police buildings in Henry Ford’s “birthplace of industrialization,” Highland Park. The municipality fled and left the place to the inhabitants, who sadly don’t seem to deserve it even in its current state. Found via this thread in FAL Files Forums.

Then, check out this transcript from NPR — about how everybody who can possibly afford it is now using helicopters — even heli-taxis — to get from place to place in Mexico City, because it’s too congested (and dangerous) to travel on the ground. And this transcript from the NewsHour last week — a story about Tijuana, where it’s now SOP there to armor your vehicle against the drug gangs, and go with armed security when traveling anywhere on the ground. I would imagine that’s going to spread north to San Diego within a decade….

Speaking of which, I used to live there. (San Diego, not Tijuana.) I found Matthew Bracken’s description of a near-future dystopic San Diego to be fascinating. Among other things, it’s very clear that he believes in a slowly collapsing society, the only safe travel is by air. (See news stories above….)

Yes, that means I’ll be finally getting around to reviewing Domestic Enemies: The Reconquista this coming Sunday. Short version: it’s better than the first book. Buy it.

The Golden Phallus

All those who care, like The Wife, will be watching the Oscars tonight.

AlGore will be there and will probably win the Oscar for “Best Comedic Docudrama”.

The trouble is, “The Nominating Committee” bent the rules for his film. And not everyone within the community is looking the other way.

Al Gore’s movie on climate change is likely to win an Oscar for best documentary on Sunday even though it arguably violates the Academy’s own criteria and should be disqualified, critics say.

But, they argue, the way in which the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has handled the issue in the past shows a clear political bias.

Documentaries that distort reality and shade the truth are insulated from criticism so long as they advance left-wing causes like global warming and gun control, said independent filmmaker Dan Gifford, a former Oscar nominee and Emmy Award winner.

According to the “rule 12” standard for documentary films established by the Academy, while it is permissible to employ storytelling devices such as re-enactments, stock footage, stills and animations, the emphasis must be on fact and not fiction.

The critics argue that in the case of “An Inconvenient Truth,” the criteria are not met.

One point of contention in Gore’s movie is animated footage of a polar bear struggling to find stable sea ice. Gore has argued that human-induced global warming is directly impacting polar bears’ habitat and sea ice in particular. Consequently, he suggests, polar bears are forced to swim longer distances and sometimes drown in the process.

“A new scientific study shows that for the first time they’re finding polar bears that have actually drowned swimming long distances – up to sixty miles – to find the ice,” Gore says in the movie.

John Berlau, author of a new book on the environmental movement entitled “Eco-Freaks,” claims the polar bear scene alone should disqualify Gore’s film from consideration for best documentary, because it departs from reality.

Berlau noted that while the movie’s companion book says the bears were drowning in “significant numbers,” the study Gore is most likely referring to only found four polar bear carcasses in the sea off Alaska.

That episode took place after a severe storm, he noted, but Gore makes no reference to a storm during the film’s animated polar bear sequence.

Gore also never cites a source for his polar bear claim, Berlau points out, but scientists on both sides of the polar bear debate told Cybercast News Service he was probably referring to a recent report filed by the U.S. Minerals Management Service.

Researchers with the service in 2004 found four dead polar bears floating in the sea off Alaska but said in a report that the bears “are believed to have drowned as a result of the storm.”

Berlau, an analyst at the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) – an organization known for global warming skepticism – who has also written about the entertainment industry, said the polar bear sequence does not square with a large body of scientific evidence.

“The polar bear cartoon was the emotional linchpin of this movie for a lot of people, but the science behind it was not rooted in truth and is a violation of rule 12 on many levels,” Berlau told Cybercast News Service.

“If the context of this film were not something politically correct like global warming, it would not be considered for an award,” he said.

Now, the folks pointing all this out will probably be accused of having “sour apples” or some such tripe, but they have one big, undeniable point of fact. That fact DQ’s AlGore’s film. Period. End of story (for folks living in reality).

If you scope through a selection of the bigger left-wing blogs (and a goodly number of the small ones too) you’ll likely see a number of leftards hoping that Gore will use his Oscar acceptance speech as the announcement of his candidacy for the 2008 Democrat Presidential Nominee.

I’ve always been against forcing mind altering drugs like Ritalin on children. But I have no qualms against offering them free-of-charge to adults who act like children.

Sunday Book Review Double Feature

Two for the price of one today! What a bargain for you, as Eddie Murphy used to say….

I confess, they just happen to be the two books I read in the last two days. We tired of relying on the local Panda Express for our Asian take-home food, and got a recommendation for Golden Chopsticks in Pleasanton, conveniently on my way home from the office. Suffice to say it was so much better than Panda Express that my wife requested it again tonight, and I was happy to oblige.

I was happier to oblige than usual because both yesterday and today I stopped by an excellent used bookstore on the way to the restaurant so I’d have something to read while they cooked the food. Being a book addict had nothing to do with it, of course.

Today I picked up Robert Parker’s newest Spenser novel, School Days. I’ve written about Parker as a moral influence in my life before. But I have to admit that one other thing I like about Parker’s writing is its Hemingway-esque spareness. Simply put, Parker always makes for a quick read: I finished School Days in a few hours. While I wouldn’t say it’s the best Spenser novel since Early Autumn, as the blurb from the Washington Post claimed, it is one of his best. The high-concept line would be “Spenser and the Columbine kids.” For Spenser aficionados, there’s no Hawk and minimal Susan, but lots of Pearl. For everyone else, there’s a return to the well-crafted Spenser novels of the early eighties. With his recent stuff Parker’s sometimes seemed to be going through the motions, but this novel shows him back in top form.

Friday’s book purchase took longer to read. I started reading at the restaurant, read through dinner, kept going until I fell asleep, then started again this morning and finished it about ten am today. As a result I got to the office for some weekend work much later than I wanted — but it was well worth it for Michael Crichton’s State of Fear.

I’ve liked Crichton’s novels the most when they’re chock-full of footnotes and mini-lectures on this or that aspect of science or history — The Great Train Robbery is an excellent example — and State of Fear pushes this to an extreme. It’s a polemic disguised as a novel, and that’s a good thing in my opinion as Crichton’s message certainly was more widely read as a novel than if it had been published as a white paper or one of his speeches. (Check his speeches out, by the way — they’re quite good.) The plot of State of Fear is pretty much a throwaway — during the course of helping to stop an ecoterrorist plot to create massive environmental disasters for fundraising purposes our hero learns the truth about the “human-induced catastrophic global warming” concept — this aspect of the book in particular was consistently ridiculed by critics, and justifiably so, although it’s no worse than most recent thrillers. It’s well-written, though, and moves along smartly. I didn’t want to put it down.

There are a couple of useful essays at the end (including one pointing out the similarities between global warming and the similarly “scientific” eugenics movement) — and the annotated bibliography is simply wonderful. Crichton’s always been at his best making connections between wildly separated areas of intellectual inquiry — as a modern Renaissance scientist, if you will — and the bibliography does not disappoint. The delightful commentary by Crichton on most of the works cited is simply a bonus. If you haven’t read this book yet, you should.

As Nelson Would Say

Ha! Ha!

Former ACLU Chapter President Arrested for Child Pornography

Federal agents arrested Charles Rust-Tierney, the former president of the Virginia chapter of the ACLU, Friday in Arlington for allegedly possessing child pornography.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by ABC News, Rust-Tierney allegedly used his e-mail address and credit card to subscribe to and access a child pornography website.

The complaint states that federal investigations into child pornography websites revealed that “Charles Rust-Tierney has subscribed to multiple child pornography website over a period of years.”

As recently as last October, the complaint alleges, “Rust-Tierney purchased access to a group of hardcore commercial child pornography websites.”

I guess we know why these guys feel perfectly fine with representing NAMBLA.

Ok, ok, that was the easy joke. Here is the diffcult one,

A newspaper headline you will never see:

Former ACLU Chapter President Arrested for Class 3 Weapons Possession

And not just because newspapermen don’t know what a Class 3 Weapon is either.

Why

The Oregon State Department of Motor Vehilces Administration Bureaucracy sucks.

CMH1: A hero’s license plate — if bureaucracy is defeated

At 86 years, Robert Maxwell is Oregon’s only living Medal of Honor recipient — one of the country’s few surviving World War II honorees — and he’d like a special license plate marking his service before he dies.

But the Oregon Department of Transportation says he can’t get one.

More than three years ago, the agency told him that he’d have to pony up $18,000 for the privilege, fill out an application, and guarantee 500 new customers a year. Flabbergasted supporters got Irwin-Hodson, the Southeast Portland company that makes Oregon’s plates, to hammer out a special set for Maxwell. Still, the state won’t allow him to use the plates on his car.

The agancy says that their “hands are tied” because of a 2003 law.

While that would be understandable if the guy hadn’t already had his own plate pressed, it is no longer reasonable.

It sounds as though Mr. Maxwell is much more a gentleman than myself, as I would just strap the fuckers on the car and see who pulls me over.

During World War II, Maxwell was protecting an observation post in southern France when a grenade landed near his feet. He covered it with his body, shielding three other soldiers nearby. Doctors restored his right heel, although much of his foot is scarred.

Maxwell has lived in Bend since 1996, and before that, in Eugene for 20 years, where he taught automotive mechanics.

Thank you Mr. Maxwell.

Deport Him

I don’t even care if this guy is in the country illegally. Deport him.

He is too stupid to be residing here.

Portland man calls 911 to get into Club

He wanted to dance — and it was an emergency!

Last Friday night, 43-year-old Edgar Dieguez-Lopez did what anyone would do in an emergency — call 9-1-1.

He was having a crisis. The Caribe nightclub on Southwest Canyon Road in Portland was not letting him in.

The dispatcher spent several minutes with him — even bringing in a Spanish translator:

He called 9-1-1 because he said, “I cannot get inside.”

OK, that is pretty damn inconsiderate, narcasistic and dumb.

But this is what makes him too stupid to live here

Police responded to his call and arrested the man for Improper Use Of 9-1-1 — and possession of drugs.

He was calling in the hopes that the police would show up, while drunk and carrying drugs.

That is almost as dumb as a person who calls the police when their drug dealer rips them off.

Yes, deport them too.

Who, What, Where, When, Why, how: Part 9

Note: Where we left John Thomas last week

——————–

The woman I knew as Root Beer Float set us on course and to say we made good time would be an understatement.

We pulled up along what looked to be a barren stretch of beachfront where she killed the motor and beached the boat. My rescuer, Mack Sauer, motioned to me to the port side where we stepped off and into the calf deep water. Cherry Soda followed and we three gave Ms. Float a shove back into the water. “Red Vines should be wating for us about 100 meters from here, Mack.” said Ms. Soda as she wandered into the reeds.

Sure enough, there was a woman waiting for us.

spankable189.jpg

“Oh, Professor! You look terrible!” she said.

“Don’t talk to him, Red, he’s not really much for conversation right now.” Mack said, though I was positive I could think up something pleasant to talk about. “Let’s get him to the safehouse and see if we can clean him up a bit before I take him to see The McManager. There’s a car there, I hope?”

“Yes, we got you a car that I’m sure will be suitable for you, Mack.” said Ms. Red Vines. “Don’t worry Professor. I’ll help you get all cleaned up.”

After clearing what felt like a truckload of gravel from my throat I was able to manage a “Thank you, miss.” as we walked towards what I saw now was a bungalow.

Now comes a very painful admission. When I got into my room in the house and looked in the mirror, to say that I looked like a drag queen on acid would be an understatement. They had shaved my face and then applied the most garish makeup I have ever seen. Two or three days of facial hair had grown back through this makeup, which had smeared with the torture I had gone through. I had appraently bled profusely from my nose, chest and back, biceps and thighs from whatever it was they had done to me. I wondered no longer why I hurt everywhere.

Ms. Red Vines (or Candy, as I later learned) was true to her word and by the time we were done, I looked 200% better, though still only about 75% of my regular self.

Mack had gotten cleaned up as well, with some help from Ms. Soda, and was waiting for me in the kitchen area. “Eat up, John. This is going be a bit of a long ride.”

Like he had to tell me twice. Just the site of something edible reminded me that I hadn’t eaten in days.

Having both eaten, Mack led me out to the garage. “They got me what I asked for. I knew you were important, John, but damn if I ain’t finally happy to have gotten this assignment. Say hello to HVAC.”

spankable190.jpg

I said hello and she handed him the keys. Candy and Cherry made their way into the garage and waved us off as well pulled out and down the driveway.

As we made our way to the main highway, Mack started to tell me exactly what was going on.

“Ok John, after you were kidnapped from that bar in Taos, New Mexico and smuggled to Texas. I’ll tell you by who in a minute, but first I need to know if you remember who it was that you were with.” I answered in the negative. “Damn. We’ll have to give you some unpleasant memory enhancing drugs after you talk to the McManager then. This is very important. We need to get that person or persons off the street, and quickly.” Mack looked very concerned and I told him that if I could just get a little more information as to what was going on, I’d spend the rest of the journey searching my memory.

“Sounds like a deal. Here’s the lowdown, and don’t laugh: The Chinese are trying to take over the world and they need you to be able to do it. They have bred themselves to the point where genetics are starting to work against them. Not inbreeding so much as they just don’t have the genetic power to make their women voluptuous any longer. Here…” and he pulled a 5×7 photo from the console and handed it to me.

spankable191.jpg

“That is China’s new top model. That is the best they can turn out. I think you can see the deficiencies.”

He was right. I was shocked at the lack of development. I asked about exercise and nutrition and will power, and Mack replied that according to all the data they had been able to find, this was the best booty they Chinese were going to be able to create for the forseeable future.

“They have your methodology and this is the best they can turn out. They need you. The Chinese already have the economic strength, the military and spy network and the sheer numbers to take over most of the world. But there will be holdouts on both the technology and and diplomatic fronts that they can only get to via the ways of women. If their women aren’t up to the task, then everything else will be moot.”

“Without you, they would have to destroy the world to succeed and for them, it isn’t worth winning if all they get is a wasteland. Without you, they have nothing.”

I sat there thinking about what Mack had said. Suddenly things from my last night in Taos started to very slowly filter in.

“You need to get some rest. We’ll be at HQ in four hours and those drugs you’ll have to take will not be pleasant.”

I agreed, turned to watch the nothingness of the Texas countryside and was asleep within minutes.

In Search of Redemption

Now that it seems as though Zumbo-rama is nearing its end, I think I can finally put my thoughs on the matter onto the ether.

Jim Zumbo said something that would be underclassified as “Very Stupid”. He has paid the price for offending a large segment of the “Gun Culture”. Field and Stream’s David E. Petzal could learn a thing or two from it (if you haven’t read his take on getting Zumboed, you should. You should then write to him about why he also doesn’t “get it”).

Has this kerfuffle done damage to the “gun culture”? Yes, a little. We seem to have opened up the closet door and shown our lack of unity as to what the Second Amendment is about. (Hint for Zumbo: You don’t need a firearm to hunt. It just makes it easier.)

Will the anti-gunners use this to their advantage? They’d be idiots if they didn’t at least try.

Why did I lay back in the cut and watch this without saying anything or writing like a madman to those involved? Because I have written about this before and was told that the squabbling was sad and needed to stop.

So anyway, moving on.

As I wrote about in the above linked post, nearly everytime I went to my local range, I had to deal with “Hunters” and “Sportsmen” who don’t care for the “Black Rifles” (and “Sniper Rifles”). It isn’t quite as annoying as the “evangelical .40 folks” I wrote about earlier this week, but it grates enough that I won’t buy a membership at a range where the “Sportsman” attitude is overwhelming.

Even before this discussion began, I had come to the conclusion that since bigots come in all shapes, sizes and prejudices, it stood to reason that Gun Bigots would as well.

I can choose where I want to join and I simply refuse to join on with clubs that don’t care for what I like to shoot. If enough of the “Gun Culture” who were offended by Zumbo’s remarks would do the same, maybe it would speed up the process of getting this brand of Gun Bigot to either see the light or send them out to pasture.

But they won’t. They’ll just keep putting up with it, paying their yearly dues to be looked down upon, to their detriment. The guy 1000 miles away is an asshole, but the range master/manager who treats them like shit when they bring their AR to the range “isn’t such a douche”. Yeah, whatever.

So anyway, moving on.

As Ben the Reasonable Nut said, I’d can’t remember hearing of the name “Jim Zumbo” before this (likewise, I had never heard of Petzal before today either). I am not a “Hunter”. I haven’t been a “Hunter” for over a decade now and because of my fellow Washington citizens, most of whom I wouldn’t want handling an unloaded gun a store, let alone a loaded one in the woods. Add to that that I’m sure that someone will be offended by my use of The Hun Bastard to hunt with, and I just stay out of the woods when season is open.

Stepping up to the plate to act the mediator is our good man, Ted Nugent. From what I can glean, The Nuge is going to take Zumbo hunting with some AR variants. This is a “Good Thing”.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the point that we want to get across to ‘ol Jim.

Hopefully, while Uncle Ted is giving Jim the “you CAN use these for hunting” speech, he will slide the “Government is Not Your Friend” speech into the mix, for that is the one Zumbo needs to hear, listen to and learn from. Ted’s email addy is right here for you to make requests.

I guess we’ll see, won’t we.

As for Zumbo’s “apologies”, I care about as much about what he says now as I did then. He didn’t insult me by saying that I own “terrorist rifles” any more than he does by his lack of knowledge about the Second Amendment even after the Thousand Pound Shithammer dropped on him.

He was a Gun Bigot who worked inside the firearms industry. He is now a Gun Bigot thinking about retirement because of his bigotry. Live by the sword, die by the sword, so to speak.

Not that I’m looking for him to impress me or ask for redemption from me, but if Jim Zumbo, who still has large amounts respect in the “Hunter” and “Sportsman” community, takes his show back out on the road and adds in what he learned about “Black Rifles” and their owners and “The Why” behind the Second Amendment into the mix, I think that then I will care about what he has to say.

I’ve seen hundreds of hours of words spent in the gunny-sphere and multiple BBS’s about this non-subject. It is time to move on to more important matters folks.

So, when was the last time you were actually at the range?

Also, have you written/called you elected representatives about HR-1022 and HR-297 yet?

Child Abuse: Eco Socialist Style

Ace found this piece of Global Warming Death Cult Propaganda from Greenpeace. It features the kid you probably see staring at you getting all snot nosed and bossy while spouting off numerous eco-socialist myths.

Ace summed up this kid, and pretty much the left in general, just about right:

he is very angry, and angry means authentic, and authentic means “absolute moral authority”

The kid ends with saying that we (meaning us adults) are either for his future or against it, that we’re either a “friend” or an “enemy”. Also, that he may just be a kid now, but he won’t be for long.

If Greenpeace is using this kid to try and shock me into changing my ways by having a child threaten me, they chose the exact wrong route. In fact, I’ve just made sure to mark “Earth Day” on my calendar (Sunday, April 22, 2007) and I will be driving my loudest, most obnoxious vehicle (known around these parts as Grimm) to where ever the local event is and make sure to fit in a couple of passes while their making their speeches this year.
