RNS Quote of the Day: 03/28/07

No responsible deer hunter would shoot an animal at 300 yards with a .223, and I find it odd that they are considered suitable for a human, the most dangerous animal on earth because only a human can inflict injuries from a distance. I do not believe that we need to take bear cartridges to war, but we do need to take white-tail cartridges, at least.

Would anyone here care to elaborate on the 6.8’s ballistic character in relation to hunting medium North American game animals?

From a member of the party of Gun Control

“Blue Dog” Democrat Senator, Jim Webb After one of his aides gets caught bringing his pistol onto Capitol grounds

“I’m not going to comment in any level in terms of how I provide for my own security.”

Oh really, Senator?

Yet you, Senator, and your party want me to lay out, very specifically I might add, just how I plan to do so. You want the make, model and serial number of each and every firearm I own and will ever purchase, handed over so that you can “fight crime”?

Excuse me Senator, but am I a criminal in your minds?

Does my hobby suggest to you that I am planning to commit a crime?

Why, exactly, should I be made to submit to a background check of any kind before I purchase a firearm? Are you presupposing that I will break the law with said inanimate object if I am not made to “Think Twice” before the handing of my money to the seller?

Fuck you, Jim Webb. Name one pro-civil rights bill on the subject of firearms that you have written and/or sponsored. Just one. Oh, so you’re new to the Senate. Ain’t that grand. I can’t see any reason why that would have stopped you from at least writing something up and passing it around.

I guess that voting to cut off funding to the men and women in Iraq, raising my taxes and promoting “The Democratic Agenda” comes before your service to the citizens of this country whose civil rights have been under attack from your party for the last fifty years comes first. I guess that you’re not one to “break from the pack” then?

Well that gets you absolutely nothing here, because your “pack” are the ones who would make it so that only people such as yourself and your staff can own firearms, period. Just like they ruled that only you and your staff can bring firearms onto the grounds.

You go to jail, because it was your gun. Your staffer goes to jail because it was loaded. See how you like being jailed for breaking the idiotic double secret voodoo hex handshake rules your party has negotiatied to keep people from protecting themselves.

In the real world, we have to deal with insipid rules such as “cartridge capacity” and “barrell length” and even “volume level”.

Asshole. If you and your staffer don’t to jail time, it will just be proof that you approve of the rules for you and your staffer that do not apply to anyone else. I can’t enter the District itself with a firearm without facing criminal charges. You need to feel the boot as well.

Maybe then you’d get off your “I’m a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment” ass and see how the rest of America lives and do something about it.

Don’t Worry, It’s Bullshit

I couldn’t stop thinking about these poor saps all morning after I read this at KisP

Global warming hits a raw nerve for some

Global warming, pesticides in food, nuclear waste – it’s enough to keep a person up at night. Indeed, a growing number of people have literally worried themselves sick over various environmental doomsday scenarios.

Their worry even has a name: eco-anxiety.

Melissa Pickett, an eco-therapist with a practice in Santa Fe, sees anywhere from 40 to 80 eco-anxious patients a month. They complain of panic attacks, loss of appetite, irritability and unexplained bouts of weakness, sleeplessness and “buzzing,” which they describe as the eerie feeling that their cells are twitching. Pickett’s remedies include telling patients to carry natural objects, like certain minerals, for a period of weeks. Making environmentally friendly lifestyle changes can also prove therapeutic, she said.

The fears of the eco-anxious are fueled by abundant media coverage of crises like global warming, collapsed fisheries and food shortages. The Oscar-winning documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” warns that only 10 years might remain to avert a major environmental catastrophe.

I’ve called this behavior, when experienced by children who have this Global Warming Death Cult propaganda drilled into their heads, child abuse.

Who would have guessed that leftists have the minds of children?

Oh, that’s right. All of us who know better.

RNS Quote of the Day: 03/27/07

Because they use .22 caliber battle carbines and not .308 battle rifles, infantry squads of both the East and the West will no longer be able to rely on small arms for engaging barricaded targets in urban areas and will have to rely instead on grenades, rockets and crew-served weapons.

Andy Tillman – Test Fire Report: The AK-74

I think that pretty much covers as an answer to Steve’s question in the comments to yesterday’s QotD.

If not, try tomorrow’s on for size.

And they wonder why we arm ourselves against the government

Red’s Trading Post in Twin Falls, Idaho, is the state’s oldest gun shop, opened since 1936. In 2004, a routine BATFE audit revealed minor clerical errors. According to Red’s, out of nearly ten THOUSAND firearms transferred between 1996 and 2004, the alleged error rate did not even reach 1%. Even the BATFE acknowledges these are minor paperwork errors — there are no missing firearms and no willful illegal acts.

And yet the BATFE has revoked the ability of Red’s Trading Post to acquire firearms for resale, although they’re still permitted to sell the firearms in stock … for now. But that’s not enough — the BATFE wants to revoke Red’s license permanently.

Red’s appealed, was denied, and are now headed to federal court. They have spent over two years and $20,000 in legal fees in this battle and are now taking it public. You can read more about Red’s Trading Post at http://www.redstradingpost.com/atf.php and view their fact sheet (in MS Word format) at www.jpfo.org/redsatffactsheet.doc .

The Red’s Trading Post site even includes an article about a competitor — Blue Lakes Sporting Goods — who was similarly railroaded by the BATFE. In an act of supreme hubris, the BATFE actually denied the Blue Lakes the right to appeal until AFTER they were in the middle of a “Going Out of Business” sale!

Unfortunately, as our readers know, this is hardly unusual behavior for the BATFE.

Having personally been a witness to BATFE harassment in my teen years (long story. too long for today), this surprised me little when I read about it at Knowledge is Power.

JPFO (Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership) , an organization you should belong to, is helping get the word out about Red’s and is taking donations to get their documentary about the BATFE called “The Gang” out at this link.

Meanwhile, click the link at the top of this post and take a looksee at Red’s auctions. Every dollar you give them will more than likely go towards fighting the BATFE over the revocation of their license, so lend ’em a hand.

More Bumpersticker Nonsense

Some folks may remember this Tale of the Bumpersticker from one of my trips over to Mr. Completely’s place of pistol practice and domicile. The link goes to the one I re-posted for posterity as the old post’s HTML was crapped (and because Kevin Baker asked nicely).

That is not the end of vengeful leftists attempting to make hay out of a bumpersticker.

Ravenwood found this tale from Roanoke Times editorialist, Christian Trejbal, where Trejbal rationalizes his political bigorty on the highways and byways of Virginia. He starts out by writing on the uber-numerous sets of personalized plates that Virginia cars have and then wanders onto the topic of bumperstickers.

They can reveal a lot about drivers, too. People clinging to their Nader 2000 stickers are either too lazy to clean their car or so die-hard they cannot move on.

At the other end of the political spectrum, stickers for failed Republican candidates such as George Allen and slogans of blind support for the president or the war in Iraq reveal much.

The nice thing about the political ones is that they encourage a marketplace of ideas on the highway. When I see a car plastered with stickers promoting candidates or views with which I disagree, I treat them just like the gas-guzzling, road-hogging sport utility vehicles I find equally morally bankrupt: I don’t yield to them.

When someone throws on a turn signal indicating he wants to break into traffic, in most circumstances there is no obligation to give way. If a vehicle sports one of those ironically misguided fish-eating-the-fish-with-feet, forget it. If it has the “Coexist” sticker with all those different religious symbols for letters, well, then I’ll make some room.

I assume people of all political persuasions follow similar driving maxims, even if subconsciously. One of the reasons to wear politics and religion on the sleeve — or in this case the bumper — is to evoke a reaction. Perhaps if enough motorists refused to yield to SUVs, their owners might reconsider their automotive choice.

Living in Seattle, I have been subject to people exactly like Mr. Trejbal. While I don’t drive an SUV, I do drive as a single occupant in a full sized truck. Once I step out of the truck, it is obvious why (I’m not a small guy and I like to be comfortable), but while driving I’m sure that assholes like Trejbal think I could do just fine in a Kia Rio.

Sorry, but no.

I still have two large red, white and blue magnetic ribbons and two medium sized, yellow “Keep My Soldier Safe” ribbons on the back of my truck, along with a few select pro-2nd Amendment stickers on the rear window of my canopy.

Once a week I can count on either being denied a lane or getting cut off by someone still sporting a Kerry/Edwards, an Air America or an “IMPEACH!” sticker on their car. And that is not counting the rest of the times I get denied or cut off by folks in vehicles without stickers.

Am I complaining? No, I drive both better and more defensively than anyone else out on Washington’s highways. Do I play “I’m a bigger bigot than you are!” with them? No, I’ll run anyone who tries to put me into a collision off the road any time I damn well please. Probably when they least expect it. I don’t need an idiotic bumpersticker to swing me into action.

Which is what pissed me off most about Trejbal’s screed; that last line about how “everybody does it, even if it is subconsciously”. Fuck him. Unlike him, I’m not insane and I’m not trying to make up for some inadequacy by inflicting my politics on others during a the commute or a run to the store.

What an asshole. Hippies walking up to me while I’m waiting for my ferry to dock is one thing. This guy needs his driver’s license revoked on the sole basis of his editorial.

RNS Quote of the Day: 03/26/07

Yes, I have been slacking in the QotD Department. My apologies. All work and no play makes me forget that I have these things stacked up.

This week we’ll be posting about the failings of our military’s current service cartridge and then I’ll make a “startling revalation” later in the week.

While you can defend your home with a .223, your Liberty can be preserved only by a .308. Whichever battle rifle you prefer; M1 Garand, M1A, FAL or HK91, get one now!

Training with your own honest-to-God main battle rifle should be the first priority of every professed lover of freedom. Get one today, even if you have to sell your AR15 to do it.

By Ourselves, For Ourselves: Part 4

And with a fresh new week comes a fresh new post.

If you have not yet read the first few installments, I suggest you do so as it will be of help in understanding just where this is coming from.

Preface

By Ourselves Pt. 1

By Ourselves Pt. 2

By Ourselves Pt. 2.1

By Ourselves Pt. 2.11

By Ourselves Pt. 3

This week’s post here will be talking about good neighbors and bad neighbors.

When this series was originally written, our good man Rivrdog had started up his preparedness blog, Paratus. Just before this installment had originally been posted, he had written the first installment of his Who Will We Fight? posts and sent Part Two up the flagpole on the same day.

When you’re done here, stop by Paratus and read his essay about the questions arising from the process of getting yourself mentally prepared for situations such as those we’re discussing. While we disagree on the “Should I Stay or Should I Go” factor, they are still a pair of good reads.

And now, if you’d please follow me below the fold

The Party of Gun Control

They say they aren’t. Their supporters will deny it until the cows come home by themselves.

But the fact remains that the Democratic Party is not. They are The Party of Gun Control. If they supported the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, maybe then they’d be Democratic enough to be the Party with The Name. But they won’t so they aren’t. The are “The Democrat Party” in name and in beliefs.

Their version of “Democratic” ends at the ballot box. The Soap Box they don’t really like because you may say something Un-Politically Correct. The Jury Box works for them, so long as it extends the powers of the state.

But in their mind, you should never dare think about the Cartridge Box.

Proof has been lain at our feet for years by the party’s very members. Yes, Repubs have had their moments of stupidity, mostly from not reading what they were voting for or signing (even Reagan fell for this one).

Last Friday, Uncle linked a dKos diary on this very subject

As many of you probably know by now, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy’s noxious HR 1022 now has at least 30 co-sponsors in the House, all of them Democrats. Many of us have been caught off-guard by this – until now.

This was previously shared only on the Amendment II Democrats Discussion Group, but frankly, all pro-RKBA Democrats need to know about this. Starting immediately, I want volunteers who are willing to pressure their Democratic Representatives not to sign on as co-sponsors of HR 1022.

The dKos diarist goes on to link to the online petition forms they’ve made up for folks to sign.

Good on them for doing so. Unfortunately, it won’t work all that well since disarming the populace is as much a Democrat Party platform as the maintaining the failing Social Security Ponzi Scheme.

Read just a few excerpts from the comments of this diary:

Push for real gun registration and tracking. Push to get guns that aren’t registered off the street, for real. Push to keep guns off the LIRR. Push for a licensing regime that is as difficult as the one for cars.

Gun owners who take the line that there is no problem except a lack of education invite bans because bans work in the face of recalcitrant companies and dealers.

———-

For starters, Colin Ferguson used a Ruger R89 pistol to gun down his victims. That gun wasn’t banned by the 1994 gun ban, nor is it listed on McCarthy’s HR 1022. Most of the guns on McCarthy’s list are rifles.

Rifles in general account for a very low number of violent crimes – and that includes the rifles with pistol grips, folding stocks, etc. If McCarthy wanted to show that she was serious about fighting gun-related crimes, she’d go after handguns instead.

———-

So all of those weapons are used by the millitary and police forces, correct? Who in their right mind has any need for these weapons? Who hunts deer with an AR15 which is basically an M16? I think unless I see how insanely restrictive this bill is I’m going to side with the Congresswoman.

———-

FWIW, a bill to ban the Steyr AUG or the FN/FAL wouldn’t bother me or most reasonable people.

A bill that bans handguns with threaded barrels or handguns with over a 10-round magazine is a big deal though.

———–

I don’t know enough about guns to comment on the threaded barrels or 10 round magazine, but I would side with a bill that bans those guns mentioned above, along with the MAC-10 and TEC-9, and SPAS 12 shotgun. I guess some more public comment would be in order for this bill.

———–

We need a multi-tiered national or state gun licensing system. One needs a license to drive a car, and a different license to drive a truck; to get either one has to pass written and practical tests. The same ought to be true for guns. Every car has an individual tracking number and sales of cars are closely controlled (of course there are plenty of folks skirting the rules); the same should be true for guns.

And that isn’t even going 1/3 of the way through the comment thread.

There are as many comments speaking out against the bill, but most of them are from just a few individuals who are hanging out in the thread. If after trying to be reasonable with these folks they still cannot see that their support for the Democrat Party means they will own fewer, and eventually no, firearms, then they are blind.

If anyone needs to see more proof that the Democrat Party is The Party of Gun Control, look no further than last Friday. If we really want to derail HR-1022, this is what needs to be done anytime it is brought up:

House Vote on D.C. Seat Thwarted

Republicans yesterday derailed a vote on a bill giving the District its first full seat in the House of Representatives by trying to tie the legislation to a drastic weakening of the city’s gun-control laws.

The surprise development came as the Democratic-dominated House appeared on the verge of passing the measure. Many D.C. vote activists had gathered at the Capitol for what they hoped would be a historic day — the first time in nearly 30 years the chamber would vote to give the District a full-fledged House representative.

But as more than three hours of debate drew to a close, Rep. Lamar S. Smith (R-Tex.) proposed sending the bill back to committee with additional language gutting the city’s gun restrictions.

Democrats retreated, fearing that conservative, pro-gun members of their party could be tempted to side with Republicans. The majority party postponed further action to give voting-rights backers time to regroup.

They feared one good law (giving DC citizens they gun rights back) being attached to their bad law (giving DC a pair of Representatives) so much that, even though they really, really want to extend their lead in the House, they backed off.

It’s kind of funny how their “My Body, My Choice”  meme fails when it leads to people being more independant from the state, isn’t it?

Being a Conformist Pays Off in Washington

The drivers who work at my place of employ are all Teamsters. They get paid a more than fair amount of money for what they do, even in relation to the cost-of-living in or near King County (which is like living in California, except that the knob is only set to 8 instead of 11).

While they are always crying about getting paid more (who doesn’t), they also get on edge when city contract time comes around and the non-union hauling companies send their bids in. They know for a fact that their hourly wage increases the bottom line number of how much our employer is going to have to bid to get the contract.

What they don’t know (or if they do, it always hides under their fearmongering rhetoric) is that the cities we deal with are 99% pro-union and wouldn’t award a contract to a non-union shop even if Dread Cthulhu came down and demanded they do so (they’d try “reasonable negotiations” with him).

Which makes me wonder if the guys have seen this story

State worker pay bill turned down: Defeat means delay of wage increase to nonunion members

An attempt to give pay raises to union and nonunion state workers on the same day was rejected as lawmakers amended their version of the state budget this week.

Rep. Gary Alexander, R- Thurston County, introduced an amendment to the budget bill that would have given all state workers their pay raises July 1. As written, the bill starts nonunion worker raises two months after the raises for union workers.

“We heard the outcry from every corner of the state the last time we did this. It just sends the wrong message to employees about how we value them,” Alexander said.

House Democrats introduced the delay in raises for nonunion workers in 2005. Rep. Helen Sommers, who serves as chairwoman of the House budget committee, said the delay was a reward for unionized workers, who negotiated the raises in their contracts.

If, like me, you’d fight tooth and nail to stay out of a union, then you are going to be punished by your bosses; the Governor and the State Legislature, via the authority granted to them by the voters. You are not as valuable to them as a union member, so you don’t get your pay increase.

Technically, there are no non-union-dues paying employees working for the State of Washington. Everyone has to pay dues, the “non-union-member” dues just aren’t as high because they don’t get representation (and yes, if you don’t even want to pay non-member dues, you get fired).

Now, if you read the last paragraph of that quote, you’ll see that the raise was negotiated by the union for their new contract, and that is the crux of the argument the state Dems have for denying the non-union members their raises.

However, if the reporter would have told you that the worst performing member of staff in the whole of the Washington State Bureaucracy; the guy or gal who is at the very edge of being fired for insubordination, being late every day for a month, missing too many days due to their alcohol/drug habit, or stealing from Washington Taxpayers, that that person will get this raise before the best performing non-union staffmember, then that argument would go right down the toilet where it belongs.

People should get raises based on their performance, not just because they managed to make it through another year without getting fired.

It is a plain and simple case of discrimination by association, or in this case, for lack of association.

And it should be a crime.

Would you like to know why?

Implementing the delay required almost $8 million in changes to the state payroll computer.

Yes, the Washington State Democrats, in service to me in the Washington State Legislature, just cost me $8 Million so that they could discriminate against folks who don’t like to join unions.

They scream about money for healthcare. They whine about money for schools. The flail about for money for mass-transit. Yet when it comes right down to the bread and the butter, they hate non-union-members more than they want to fix any of those things.

Fuck them in the ass.
