RNS Quote of the Day: 03/26/07

Yes, I have been slacking in the QotD Department. My apologies. All work and no play makes me forget that I have these things stacked up.

This week we’ll be posting about the failings of our military’s current service cartridge and then I’ll make a “startling revalation” later in the week.

While you can defend your home with a .223, your Liberty can be preserved only by a .308. Whichever battle rifle you prefer; M1 Garand, M1A, FAL or HK91, get one now!

Training with your own honest-to-God main battle rifle should be the first priority of every professed lover of freedom. Get one today, even if you have to sell your AR15 to do it.

What about a 6.8 on an AR platform?

  2. Merle says:

If budget is a serious problem, you might want to get a surplus bolt action, such as a 8mm Mauser, 7.62x54R, etc so you have SOMETHING to work with today. Then you can get an autoloader later on, and have a spare/back up rifle.

Merle, there’s something even better: get a surplus Indian Ishapore Enfield 2A. It’s chambered in 7.62X51 NATO, so when you finally collect the bucks for that FN, H&K, G3, CETME, M1A, AR-10 or whatever else in 7.62 NATO, you will have ammo commonality.

A friend of mine got one of the 2As, and left it with me to clean up and test. It shot exactly to point of aim with the battle sight. The wood left something to be desired, but it is the ONLY battle boltie (charger loading, too) in 7.62 NATO, except a few that the Israelis converted and they are rare.

There is an occasional Garand converted to 7.62 NATO, and the last one I saw at auction brought about $800.

For my $$$, I would buy a CETME at auction. Get one with the right of return. Check it carefully for bolt and carrier condition, and how well H&K magazines fit into the mag well. Consider laying out another $100 for a spare barrel and front end. There are all kinds of CETME parts out there, and it is a reliable and accurate rifle, PROVIDED YOU GET ONE WITH A GOOD RECEIVER. When Century Arms imported them and built a new receiver for them to satisfy the BATFE, the early efforts were not good, but the later you go in their run, the better the receivers got. There are several hundred thousand of them out there, and they come up at auction all the time for about 1/2 to 2/3 the money for a PTR-91 AND TWO POUNDS LESS WEIGHT!!! (take the same mags though, and they are now the cheapest mags on the market).

Yep, go 7.62 NATO. There will be ammo commonality for a long time, because the Army is committed to the MG240 for the long haul, and they have issued out a bunch of M-14s for use in Iraq.

7.62 NATO means the only cover your enemy can use to properly hole up is reinforced concrete. You can shoot through anything else to get to him.
