Americans set record with gifts to charity

Americans gave nearly $300 billion to charitable causes last year, setting a record and besting the 2005 total that had been boosted by a surge in aid to victims of hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma and the Asian tsunami.

Donors contributed an estimated $295.02 billion in 2006. That’s up from $283.05 billion in 2005, according to an annual report released today by the Giving USA Foundation at Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy. When adjusted for inflation, the increase amounts to 1 percent.

“What people find especially interesting about this, and it’s true year after year — that such a high percentage comes from individual donors,” Giving USA Chairman Richard Jolly said.

Yet, the left demands that Americans change their habits. Why do they hate charities?

Another reason to like Fred Dalton Thompson

He scares the piss out of the Dems

Even before his expected July announcement, Fred Thompson’s all-but-declared entry into the Republican presidential stakes has prompted the Democratic National Committee to attack him as a potential GOP front-runner and to use his prospective candidacy to raise money.

Democratic strategists say Thompson’s populist style and show-biz allure could prove extremely appealing in a general election at a time when voters are so down on Washington. So the party has launched a preemptive campaign against him that includes a DNC fundraising e-mail branding Thompson, “The inside-outsider.”

If I didn’t already like the guy, this would sway towards him.

And unlike a former Dem President I could name, his “formers” still like Thompson. Sort of a “Ladies man for actual ladies. Not trumped up husseys” kind of guy. Hit the link and read the quotes from these gals. You know they have to make Hillary’s eyes bulge.

Not “Fakin’ the Funk” Any Longer

Venezuelan dictator/asshole, Hugo Chavez, is always whining about how “America is trying to kill him”, yada, yada, yada.

It seems as though he is trying to up the ante on us.

President Hugo Chavez urged soldiers on Sunday to prepare for a guerrilla-style war against the United States, saying that Washington is using psychological and economic warfare as part of an unconventional campaign aimed at derailing his government.

Dressed in olive green fatigues and a red beret, Chavez spoke inside Tiuna Fort — Venezuela’s military nerve-center — before hundreds of uniformed soldiers standing alongside armored vehicles and tanks decorated with banners reading: “Fatherland, Socialism, or Death! We will triumph!”

If by “triumph” he means that socialism will end in his country when he dies a violent death, he may actually be right for once.

Cap’n Ed lists the multitude of reasons why the US would find it to our disadvantage to invade Venezuela, despite Chavez’s insistance the we will be doign so at any moment. He holds aside though, that we may have to do something after a Hugo-inspired attack on the US if the guy doesn’t knock this shit off, and reminds us that this nutjob has attack submarines.

Their Dirty Laundry

Last week, the Senate passed a bill containing new CAFE standards for US vehicles. The main force behind this bill was Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, who himself inserted legislation that would mandate that all cars, trucks and SUVs meet a 35mpg standard by 2020.

But I would like to break away from that discussion for a moment though and talk about your dirty laundry. Yes, those clothes you’ve worn this weekend but haven’t yet gotten clean (or, if you’re a bachelor, the ones that are probably on the floor right now).

The reason I want to do this is so that I may point you towards this article at the Competitive Enterprise Institute about standards passed in 2002 on the subject of household appliances..

Top-loading laundry machines have long been a low-priced, dependable home appliance. But no more—the federal government has wrecked them with its energy-efficiency regulations.

That’s the finding of the June 2007 issue of Consumer Reports. In its words: “Not so long ago you could count on most washers to get your clothes very clean. Not anymore. …What happened? As of January, the U.S. Department of Energy has required washers to use 21 percent less energy, a goal we wholeheartedly support. But our tests have found that traditional top-loaders … are having a tough time wringing out those savings without sacrificing cleaning ability, the main reason you buy a washer.”

Some of the top-loaders tested had “the lowest scores we’ve seen in years.”

In fact, out of the 21 new top-loader models that Consumer Reports tested, it couldn’t pick a single one as a “Best Buy”: “[F]or the first time in years we can’t call any washer a Best Buy because models that did a very good job getting laundry clean cost $1,000 or more.”

Just as they would have you contaminate your home with mercury by forcing you to buy flourescent light bulbs, the Democrats and their policy wonks would have you washing the shit stains out of your shorts on rocks. For Mother Gaia of course.

Hit the CEI link and find how you can “Send your underwear to the Undersecretary” of the Department of Energy. They say shit rolls downhill, but let’s see if we can make it go the opposite direction for a change. Also included at that link are a few of the instances where groups such as CEI warned those in Congress what the new standards would do to the efficiency of appliances, and how they were and still are being ignored.

Now, back to cars. The automakers will find ways to manufacture their vehicles so that they meet these standards, even if it means having to build the cars lighter. Also known as “less safe”. In fact, the National Academy of Sciences published a report in 2002 that discovered approximately 2000 needless auto accident deaths per year were because of the implementation of CAFE standards. A report, I might add, that was given to Congess for your elected Senators and Representatives to read.

Let’s see, we can add preventable deaths to the mercury and dirty clothes in your home. Again, all for Mother Gaia, of course. See how it is somewhat of an altar sacrifice?

Not that any of these rules apply to said Senators or Representatives. The day of the vote on CAFE standards, Reid was chauffeured from his offices in the Senate building to a press conference across the street, in a Chevrolet Suburban. I’m sure that his clothes were professionally cleaned the day before as well.

Lastly, I’d like to include this link to one of the new models of cars made in China that should be hitting US shores in the very near future.

It is called the Brilliance BS6 and it is placed to compete with other mid-size luxury sedans. Though, according to the tests done in Germany, where the car is currently for sale, those who purchase the BS6 will be making a “killer deal” in only one way when they buy it.

The BS6, as currently constructed, appears to a complete piece of crap. The horrifying 40 mph offset frontal crash test video shows damage that can be described as catastrophic at best.

The A-pillar collapses and folds up like a cheap suitcase, forcing the driver’s door to pop largely out of its frame, while the lower portion of the car buckles like it’s made of recycled pop cans. We wouldn’t want to be the driver’s legs…or any other part of him for that matter.

To open the mangled door afterwards, the ADAC techs needed to use a huge crowbar to get it to budge. ADAC notes that the pedals intruded a foot and a half (32 cm) into the driver’s space, while the IP moved in almost 8 inches (20 cm). Needless to say, the BS6 failed the test, garnering just 1 star.

This is the future of autos in America, thanks to the Democrat run US Senate, and the House as well if these standards get passed through there.

RNS Quote of the Day: 06/25/07

Let’s stick with last week’s theme, shall we?

Then, next week, we’ll show these people who demand the death of the human race to be the violent sociopaths that they truly are.

We need a drastic decrease in human population if we ever hope to create a just and equitable world for animals.

They don’t even want developed land redeveloped

Just a few blocks west of Seattle’s two sports stadiums (Safeco Field, where the Seattle Mariners play ball, and Quest Field where the Seahawks toss the pigskin) sits a decrepit 10 acre lot.

This lot used to hold the Seattle Goodwill Thrift store, as well as the distribution center where they park all their trucks and collection trailers. It closed down and moved a couple years ago, much to the dismay of my Mother-in-Law who used to love shopping in the humungous building of clothes, knicknacks and other second-hand items.

The lot has been sold to a developer who has divided most of it up amongst a few large retailers; namely Target and Lowe’s. There will also be a few sections of strip malls going in there as well.

And the anti-Big-Box store folks are raving mad.

Across the country, large blocks of land in low-income communities that edge dense urban areas have been prime targets for big-box malls. Seattle’s 10-acre Goodwill Industries site, near Dearborn Street and Rainier Avenue South, is now the focus of a $300 million project that will include a Target, a Lowe’s and much more. The planned project lies in the heart of low-income cultural communities like Little Saigon, the Chinatown International District and Rainier Valley.

Commuters, traveling daily from downtown to residential neighborhoods beyond, might like having a huge, low-cost shopping mall on their way home. But what many don’t realize is that there’s a connection between big-box shopping and poverty. While this mall might save shoppers a few dollars, it will have a harmful impact on the people in surrounding communities and even on the lives of the workers employed there.

The rest of the rant goes on to demean corporate owned retail stores and how they take advantage of “the worker”. Nevermind that there is a high unemployment rate in the above named neighborhoods, the writers of this piece will never believe that any job, even if it pays just over minimum wage, is better than no job.

Also never mind that thousands of people in these neighborhoods can and do go at least ten miles north or south, or fifteen miles to the east, to get to any stores comparable to the ones going in there (with the exception of Lowe’s, which is just a couple miles south along Rainier Avenue).

You only need scroll to the bottom of the page to see who wrote this piece and their anti-development motivations.

To be fair, the Seattle Times did publish this excellent opinion piece, which takes a decidedly differing opinion of the development project and is from a resident of the local neighborhood. Although they did take over two weeks to be able to find space to squeeze it into their publication.

I don’t approve of her methods

But I do love her message.

Woman registers her dog to vote; Prosecutors growl

Jane Balogh had a pretty good idea who was calling when the phone rang and the caller asked for Duncan M. MacDonald.

Duncan is the dog Balogh registered as a voter seven months before the November 2006 election.

Duncan’s absentee-ballot envelope was signed with a picture of a paw print.

“You can’t sign with a paw print,” the election worker told Balogh on Nov. 9.

“I said, ‘he can if he’s a dog,’ ” answered Balogh, a 66-year-old grandmother and Army veteran who lives in Federal Way.

The election worker told her a supervisor would call, but she never heard from anyone.

After making her point — how easy it is for a voter to register illegally — Balogh will be arraigned in King County Superior Court on Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of making a false statement to a public official.

Balogh’s crime was signing Duncan’s name on a registration card under a declaration that he meets all the requirements to vote. She submitted ballots in his name in the September and November 2006 and May 2007 elections. She wrote “VOID” on the ballots, and didn’t cast any votes.

Balogh, who lives with Duncan, an Australian shepherd-terrier mix, and four other dogs and four cats, registered her dog as a protest of a 2005 state voter-registration statute that she says makes it too easy for noncitizens to vote. She put her phone bill in Duncan’s name, then used the phone bill as identification to register him as a voter.

The truly sad part of this is that the local media is playing it as sort of a joke story, as can be seen by the headline above, copied from the Seattle Times, and from the quote from Acting Prosecuting Attorney, Dan Satterberg:

They say you should let sleeping dogs lie, but you can’t let voting dogs vote.

I’ve seen nothing on this from any of the local leftist blogs, not even to accuse the dog of voting Republican. This will pass into anecdotal history for those who favor tighter restrictions on voter registration and completely out of the memory of those who oppose it.

The wife was looking around for some accessories to go with her 1963 Counrty Sedan wagon and while this didn’t get selected, she made sure to point it out to me.

It looks to be an old Rosco revolver that someone wisely converted to use as a shifter top.

I saw wisely because I would only give a Rosco revolver to someone I knew was going to try and shoot me in the near future. They stood as good a chance of the thing blowing up in their hand as they did it actually working. The vast majority of them are pre-68 guns, so no serial number to worry about.

If a gun is going to be taken off the streets, I prefer it to be a notoriously unsafe one and to have it put to good use. This works for me. I’m also noticing that the current bid price of just over $140 is around $135 more than most would give you for the thing if it was still working.

Now, to see if the guy who owns that roadster is selling the car as well.

The Booty Eulogies: In Remembrance

I first met John Thomas after I was assigned to interview him for a paper I was working for at the time in Malmo. He had come to Sweden to attend the Stockholm Jazz Festival and I had heard a rumor that he was biding his time in my home city. After a heated discussion with my editor, one where she insisted that she would interview him herself, my insistence that her husband would not approve of finding out about what her and the new copyboy were doing, I made a call to John’s hotel and arranged the time.

During our meeting I gave him a tour of the city. He had many questions, as did I. My questions were of the personal type, so his also became. He answered all of mine, and I answered all of his.

I never did get around to turning in the notes from that interview. I will now keep those notes forever to myself.

Oopsie!

Heaven forbid, that they actually meant to break the law.

The Oregon Secretary of State’s Office has issued a Notice of Proposed Civil Penalty against Jon Nelson, the Corvallis City Manager, and four other city employees for violating Oregon election law during last year’s referendum on the city’s telecommunication tax.

Oregon law prohibits public employees from promoting adoption or defeat of a measure while on the job during working hours, and forbids other persons from requiring public employees to support or oppose a measure.

According to the Secretary of State’s Office, the City Manager and other city employees illegally advocated in support of the telecommunications tax during work hours by sending biased newsletters to city residents, publishing biased materials on the city website, and publishing a biased explanatory statement on the city’s website after being told by the Secretary of State’s Office that it was against the law to publish the statement in the voters pamphlet.

The city officials are being allowed to appeal the Secretary’s “Notice”. I can guarantee that they’ll try and play it off as “they didn’t realize” or that they “thought that they were being fair” or some other lame excuse.

Fire them all. No excuses. Then, jail them.
