RNS Quote of the Day, 09/20/07

From the Reagan Diaries:

Saturday, July 18 [2001]:

Sens. Baker & Dole, Dave Stockman, Max, Mike D., Ed Meese & Dick Darman came up to the study. It seems Jim Wright is playing games.

On the House floor he introduced a resolution that the sense of the Congress be that we should drop from our budget cuts the elimination of the minimum Soc. Sec. benefit. It is presently in both the House & Senate versions. It is a pol. trick aimed solely at creating a 1982 election year issue for the Dems….

Sen. Baker said I could fight or retreat — he’s not sure we can win either on the floor or in the conference committee. If I retreat the gains we’ve made on lowering inflation will be lost. It will be taken as a test of my determination & looked upon as a sign that I’ll back down on the tough decisions. Well I have no intention of retreating; I’ve sent a letter to our leaders on the hill informing them that early in August I’ll go on TV to discuss the Soc. Security problem. I think this will shake Jim Wright more than a little….

The Man Who Could Do No Wrong

In the eyes of the left, at least.

Hugo Chavez is ending education in Venezuela, in favor of indoctrination.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has threatened the country’s private schools with closure unless they adopt the government’s socialist ideology.

Mr Chavez said schools must introduce a new curriculum being introduced this year that he said would help develop values of cooperation and solidarity.

The same kind of cooperation and solidarity that the Khmer Rouge enjoyed: We are right, you are wrong. And for being wrong, you need to die.

I’ll be keeping an eye on the inmates at the dKos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo for their defenses of this move by Chavez. I’m guessing that it’ll be classified by them as a “Big Media Lie”, just like the revoking of broadcast licenses was earlier this year.

After all, what media is bigger than that organ of the right-wing noise machine, The BBC?

A Living Biplane!

Well, not living now, it’s extinct. But it did live, with both wings and winged feet.

For me. But not for thee

At least if you live in the District of Columbia

Republican lawmakers today blocked the Senate from taking up the D.C. voting rights bill, dealing a major blow to the District’s most promising effort in years to get a full member of Congress.

The vote was merely on whether to begin action on the bill. But only 57 senators voted in favor, short of the 60 needed to proceed. Without enough support to vault the Senate’s procedural hurdles, the bill is expected to stall for this year, and possibly next year as well.

Thankfully.

Unfortunately, the bill would have also given Utah the Representative that Utah has earned. There should be no compromise necessary to get Utah their new Congressional Rep. as they have to proven population growth to get it.

And remember, this “Compromise” would have very likely also given the District two Senators as well as a Congressional Rep.

Doesn’t sound like a “Compromise” to me. Maybe that is what Dems think “Compromise” means, but they’ve got their head up their ass. More on that in another post below.

RNS Quote of the Day: 09/19/07

Stephen Spruiell, writing about the denial of a visa to Sheik Abdul Sattar al-Rishawi (the Sunni sheik who was assasinated shortly after Bush’s visit to Anbar Province, Iraq) by the State Department.

He quotes a report by Eli Lake in which it is accused that the State Department denied the visa for political reasons. Spruiell also speaks to an anonymous ex-State Department official as to whether this type of crap at Foggy Bottom could lead to trouble for General Patraeus and gets told that this is pretty much situation normal for the department, though this particular case is out in the open because of the Sheik’s death.

And that brings us to our quote

If you don’t have dissent at the State Department, there’s probably a Democrat in office.

Anon ex-State Department official

What truly sad, sad people these must be.

This is the week

For kick-ass court rulings, apparently.

First up, the money hungry ways of the Global Warming Death Cult members has had a halt brought to it

The courts do not have the authority or the expertise to decide injury lawsuits concerning global warming, a federal judge in San Francisco ruled yesterday in dismissing a suit brought by the State of California against six car companies.

The decision, by Judge Martin J. Jenkins, was welcome news for automakers, which had suffered a defeat last week in federal court in Vermont.

In the case decided yesterday, California claimed that the six car companies produced vehicles that accounted for more than 20 percent of human-generated carbon dioxide emissions in the United States and more than 30 percent of those in California.

The suit claimed that the emissions were a public nuisance and sought billions of dollars in damages.

Judge Jenkins wrote that a resolving of the questions presented in the suit was not a proper task for the courts.

“The adjudication of plaintiff’s claim would require the court to balance the competing interests of reducing global warming emissions and the interests of advancing and preserving economic and industrial development,” Judge Jenkins wrote.

The two decisions are not necessarily at odds. They collectively suggest that states may address climate change through their legislatures and executive branches but not through the courts.

Billions of dollars. They wanted billions of dollars from companies that built products that have served those who brought suit their entire lives. Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

The other decision that made me smile was the win for Caterpillar Corp. over the parental units of St. Pancake, Rachel Corrie.

I haven’t posted this in a good long time, but today seems appropriate

Ahh, I feel relieved now.

Watch For Uranus

Because a large number of other people will be looking for Uranus. Heck, they’ll probably even be using high powered telescopes to catch a glimpse of Uranus.

Uranus is the second most distant planet in our solar system. Although it’s 2 billion miles away, and quite faint, you actually can see this planet naked-eye. This week is a good time to look for Uranus — the planet is now at its biggest and brightest for the entire year.

People had been studying the heavens for millennia, but Uranus wasn’t recognized as a planet until the late 1700s. Finding Uranus for yourself can be a challenge, but a little persistence pays off.

Uranus won’t be anywhere near as big a the moon, so you’ll have to look closely. In fact, Uranus could fit inside one of the cracked craters on the moon.

And for all the Democrats and other assorted leftists out there, don’t bother. Your politics have denied you from being able to see any other anus but your own after what they’ve done to the positioning of your head.

Still on the hunt

Went and looked at a Commanche pickup yesterday and found to my dismay that they too are a bit short of leg room.

Goona try out one of these in the near future (tomorrow or Thursday)

No four-door Cherokees for me. Also must be a 5spd. Yeah, I’m being fussy, but I know what I like.

Thanks for the tips yesterday, guys. They will be used for good and not evil.

I wish I had an extra grand/grand-and-a-half in this fight, I might just go straight for a CJ/YJ model. Nothing too fancy though.

Fred on Taxes

Sort of a “Duh!” statement. Nothing definitive. But at least it isn’t the standard Democrat answer of “Tax the Rich!”

Rocky Spencer

To y’all who don’t live in western Washington, you’ve probably never heard that name.

rocky.jpg

Rocky Spencer was a Wildlife Biologist with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. He was the first person to ever earn the title “Carnivore Specialist” because of his work the native Cougars and Bears. He’s the guy who was called if you were a homeowner who found a rather nasty beastie in your backyard. He’d tranq it and contain it and release it somewhere safer for both you and the beastie.

On September the 8th, Spencer was killed in a helicopter accident while relocating big-horn sheep from a ranch that didn’t want them about.

The Mom, whom I’m sure you all see commenting about, worked with Rocky Spencer in her job at the Dept. of Natural Resources. She also went to his memorial this last weekend. I wanted to get this posted up last week, but with the memorial and what she saw there, I’m thinking that being a bit late isn’t such a bad thing.

He worked quite often with our Foresters at the Dept. of Natural Resources and even though I’ve been retired for over ten years, I remember him as a genuinely kind, very quiet and extremely dedicated man.

Two of his visits to our office in Enumclaw come to mind and make me smile at the memories. Someone’s car had hit a cougar and on his way taking it to his office, he stopped to show us (and tell us about) this beautiful animal. Most of us remember the education we received that day. The second visit is more of an awwww experience. Working in the area one morning, a couple committed what most outdoorsman know not to do, and that was “rescue” a fawn they found in the woods. They saw Rocky in his Dept. of Fish and Wildlife rig and flagged him down and gave him the animal which he determined was probably a day or two old. Again, he stopped at the office – where all of us went gaga over this adorable animal. It actually pranced around our office, stopped at various desks for a pet and sniffed at the goodies most of us kept in our desks. I doubt that little cutie ever made it back to the wild. Most likely stayed in a sanctuary. But that was a day we all still remember.
So rather than remember the horrendous, tragic ending to Rocky Spencer’s life, I choose to think about and celebrate somebody who did very good works, brought smiles and did his best to make his corner of the world a little bit better place. He will be missed by many, many people.

At the memorial, more than 500 people packed the Wabash Presbyterian Church in Auburn to listen to people talk about Rocky.

Oh, and you may think you have balls and that you can shoot…

That’s Rocky in the orange vest, tranqing Roosevelt elk for relocation.
