Dumb Idea #46379

Ohio officials are thinking way too far “Outside the Box”

A controversial bill to require sex offenders to display neon green license plates is making waves between Ohio lawmakers and law enforcement officials, MyFoxCleveland.com reports.

Prosecutors, sheriffs and police chiefs oppose Kristen’s Law, named for 14-year-old Kristen Jackson, who in 2002 was lured from a fair by a paroled sex offender, murdered and her body dismembered.

They say the perpetrators are smart enough to find other ways to corner their victims and fear the plates will cause vandalism and harassment against the offenders, as well as road rage and traffic hazards.

Why not just eliminate the problem of identifying sex offender’s vehicles by not giving them licenses to drive because they’re locked up for life?

That is “Inside the Box” thinking. Keeping the sex offenders “Inside” the box they cannot be trusted out of.

Be still, my beating heart

And watch as the Dems eat their own!

Now, a coalition of progressive Democrats upset with Feinstein’s controversial votes will ask the California Democratic Party to censure her at its executive board meeting this weekend, the Huffington Post has learned.

The move comes as Feinstein again finds herself under fire for saying Thursday that she now supports granting legal immunity to telecom companies that shared customer email and phone messages with the federal government as part of the warrantless surveillance program.

“Dianne Feinstein does not listen to the people of California,” said Rick Jacobs, president of the Courage Campaign, a progressive organization in California. “She supports George Bush’s agenda time after time.”

And maybe, just maybe, they’ll start up a Senate investigation to look into a known crime, instead of the ones they’re currently running that go looking for crimes.

As Howie Klein and Glenn Greenwald note, her shady votes to steer huge government contracts to her husband should have triggered an ethics investigation long ago, and it should definitely be on our radar as something to push for in the coming months.

The times, they may be getting interesting.

Drunks with Guns

drunksguns.jpg
No, not those drunks.

I’m talking about Mothers Against Drunk Driving saying that that is what the USMC is.

They’re in for one hell of a fight

A dispute currently pits the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California, against MADD. The Corps wants Marines serving under the age of 21 to have the right to consume alcoholic beverages. MADD is steadfastly opposed, and is spear-heading efforts to block the Corps from accomplishing this feat.

It is time for MADD to stop acting like the Brady Bunch and let these men and women be adults.

Imagine That!

Boston and Washington DC are the first cities take away your right to Due Process.

Cities eliminate right to contest parking tickets

In an attempt to stem the loss of revenue from motorists contesting parking tickets, cities are effectively eliminating the traditional due process rights of motorists to defend themselves at an impartial hearing. By the end of next year, Washington, DC’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will not allow anyone who believes he unfairly received a citation to have his day in an administrative hearing.

“DMV will complete the phase-out of in-person adjudication of parking tickets in favor of mail-in and e-mail adjudication by December 2008,” the Fiscal Year 2008 DMV plan states.

The move is intended to allow automated street sweeper parking ticket machines to boost the number of infractions cited well beyond the 1.6 million currently handed out by meter maids. As one-third of those who contest citations in the city are successful, the hearings cut significantly into the $100 million in revenue tickets generate each year.

I’m all for automation and making things operate more smoothly, except when it involves the government being able to tax me.

What with all the “Hating the Constitution” the leftwing “Constitutional Watchdogs” have the Bush Administration doing, I’m very truly surprised that they aren’t wetting themselves over this.

Ok, so I’m not really surprised.

Belated Veterans’ Day Remembrance — the Jokester

Between college and law school, I worked at a Department of Veterans’ Affairs clinic as a file clerk/receptionist for the Chief Medical Officer of the facility. (I got to take the Oath to preserve, protect & defend the Constitution. That was pretty cool.)

One day, a very old fellow poked his head into our suite. (I suspect he’d seen my then-girlfriend, who worked in the suite with me and was stunningly gorgeous). He turned out to be a World War I veteran (yes, that’s WWI, not WWII). It said so right in the database.

doughboy.jpg
With a completely straight face but a twinkle in his eye, he explained that he wanted to make a complaint about the toilets. It seemed the water level in the bowl was too high, because the head of his penis got wet when he sat down.

One of my coworkers took the complaint down and we promised to look into it. The girls were talking about this episode for a week.

I’m guessing this is a WWI-era joke played on countless military nurses during that war and since. Any of our military readers recognize it?

Anyway, my hat’s off to that nameless gent. At the time, I counted myself privileged to have met a veteran of the Great War. I still do.

There’s only one left, by the way.

Cross your fingers

The SCOTUS will decide if they’re accepting arguments on Parker/Heller today.

Let us be patient.

Losers love an echo chamber

David Thompson links to an early post at the uber-leftist site, Liberal Conspiracy, by one Zohra Moosa titled “We Need Our Own Space”

I’m a little bit tired of spending so much of my time defending the most basic principles of what I stand for. It serves to distract. What I need is a safer space where I don’t lose so much energy justifying why social and environmental justice are worth spending a lot of society’s money on.

What I want is a space where these ideas are a given and the debate is about how best to actualize them. Where a frank discussion about the nature of power and who gains and who loses by not changing things is as necessary as air. I want to be challenged to be the most radical humanitarian in the room. Instead of rolling around in a fog that dangerously confuses the over-policing of some with ‘freedom’ and where indifference is rewarded. I want to be inspired by the good and the great to imagine what is possible – in that place where all life prospers.

I want to have conversations with people that are constructive, compassionate and rigorous. Conversations that are both logical and passionate, because they are focussed on how best to make the world a better place so that no one is left behind.

The conversation that follows in the comments is one that should be read as it is an excellent example of why Ms. Moosa’s ideas should be challenged.

She accepts without reservation that societies leave people behind, and not that some people choose to stay behind through their own actions or lack of action.

She also demands without reservation that you and I pay ever increasing amounts of money to our respective governments so that these people might be brought up to the level we work to be at. And despite decades of evidence on two continents, she refuses to believe that taking this money away from us only holds us at a lower level and does not lift up those who would stay down by choice.

No wonder she wishes not to discuss her ideas. She might have to follow a logical progression that doesn’t make her feel saint-like.

RNS Quote of the Day: 11/13/07

Rand Simberg asks

“Even the BBC has figured out that things are going pretty well in Iraq. How long will it take the Gray Lady and the networks to figure it out?”

To which Glenn Reynolds responds

“Until there’s a Democrat in the White House?”

Its In Their Pipe Now

But will they gather the balls to light it?

If you have a TV you can’t get away from those DividedWeFail.Org commercials with children demanding that candidates “actually fix health care and Social Security” and not just wander around on the campaign trail saying they will.

That these commercials are funded by the AARP and the dollars of retirees is a hilarious point that I don’t believe is fully grasped by them.

So as of last Friday Fred Thompson has put his plan on the table.

Any reaction from those bozos?

Nope.

Not really surprising as the AARP is simply an organ of the Democrat Party and will ignore Thompson’s plan while they wait for one of the Democrats to put something half-assed up that they can trumpet as the be-all, end-all of plans to save SSI.

Currently, only Obama has anything out on the topic and it is in response to Thompson’s idea. Obama’s idea basically consists of higher payroll taxes, especially on “The Rich”. Other that, or as Cap’n Ed says “Without specific counterproposals, this may wind up like 2005 all over again, with Democrats insisting that Social Security needs no fixing at all.”

That’d be funny to watch this all blow up back in the faces of the AARP.

I know its “Pollyanna-ish” but it’d just be nice if the AARP would be at least a little more honest about their leanings and what they’re doing with their member’s money.

Myself, I got out of high school knowing that SSI wouldn’t be there for me and that I’d be made to pay dearly for the lazy ahead of me. Too bad an entire generation expects something unconstitutional from the government a large number of them spent a large number of years wishing it would puff out of existence. They “opened their minds” so much their fucking brains fell out.

His supporters stand for truth and justice?

Not so much, really.

Actually, the majority of Ron Paul supporters either really like Stormfucked (the actual name of the website will not be used on these premises because all those who frequent it need to Sieg Help!), or don’t like Bush because he A. was involved in September 11th, or B. Is a Christian Socialist.

And in all reality, you almost have to hand it to the Stormers for knowing the true nature of Ron Paul better than those who are just sick of Bush. Because being sick of someone isn’t a good enough reason to support Paul.

Hell, even those against the US being in Iraq can’t even be for Paul anymore, since his latest ads barely even mention his opposition to it.
