Help me out here

The AP has broken down the House’s “Ribbate” plan here.

Paul Krugman and I agree that the bill sucks. However, I won’t be washing my mouth out with soap just yet, since I don’t think it is necessary at all and he just whines that it doesn’t include more redistribution of wealth.

My question is this:

I keep hearing that if citizens use this “Ribbate” money to pay down their debts, that that will not “help” the economy.

Why?

Is it because these checks will be for +/- $1200 and won’t put a significant dent in the average household debt (not counting vehicles and/or mortgage) of approx. $9000?

Or is paying off personal debt not a plus for the economy, and why not?

I cannot for the life of me figure out why paying off student loans, credit cards, etc., and getting more money back to the banks for reinvestment wouldn’t be a good thing.

Help a brother out.

RNS Quote of the Day: 01/28/08

It all started out so innocently. On Friday, “tgirsch” at the LeanLeft blog proposed a new firearms law.

I’d like to propose a new state law. Basically, I think that there are a lot of fraudulent gun purchases being made, and I want to put a stop to it. So here’s what I’m proposing:

  • We create a statewide gun purchase registry. Anyone who wishes to buy a gun of any kind must register in advance.
  • When a resident wants to buy a gun, they must show a state-issued photo identification.
  • Anyone selling a gun must check the purchaser’s photo identification. The name and address on the ID must exactly match the statewide gun registration list. If it does not, the purchase must be refused.

This seems perfectly fair and reasonable to me. Nobody who is legally allowed to buy a gun today would be prevented from buying a gun under this law, and it would prevent fraudulent gun purchases from taking place.

Uncle linked to it for “flame bait” over the weekend.

A number of gunnies stopped by let “tgirsch” know that 2/3 of what he wrote down was already the law, and also about how the registration part had been tried in the US before and was shown to be a prerequisite for firearms confiscation.

So, head up ass and full speed ahead, “tgirsch” comes back on Sunday with the following

Oh, did I say buy a gun? I’m sorry, I meant vote. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Just as useless as the owning a car/owning a firearm strawman, the dude compares the RKABA, listed as the 2nd Amendment in the Bill of Rights, to a something not explicitly listed in the BoR and only implied in the Constitution (and which has been Amended no less than three times in the history of the nation: 15th, 19th and 24th Amendments).

But who is caring about actual accuracy here. “tgirsch” is a liberal/progressive/leftist and he doesn’t need facts. His emotion (in this case: Anger) makes his cause righteous and above any and all need for facts or reason.

Which brings us to the actual QotD, from “workinwifdakids” who, unlike “tgirsch’s” fellow travelers, actually stands up and questions his intellectual honesty with his strawman

If voting were the same as purchasing firearms, you’d have to be 18 to vote in some elections, and 21 to vote in others; you’d have to take a literacy test, and then pay a steep poll tax to have your literacy test graded; the results would be entered into a federal database; when you decide to actually vote, they’d take your fingerprints and government-issued ID, and run you through a federal database to ensure you’re mentally competent to vote; and they’d hold the results for 10 days. If you were declined, they’d never, ever have to give you a reason. Upon being approved to vote, you’d have to show your government-issued photo ID again. Oh, and the best part? You could only vote for one issue or candidate every 30 days.

If purchasing firearms were the same as voting, you’d have to pinky-swear that you’re eligible to own one, prominent national politicians would be quietly asking if felons should be allowed to own guns, and the ACLU, NAACP, and MALDEF would be holding rallies if a single person were asked to show an ID to buy a gun. You’d also have federal investigations over why dead people, felons, and illegal aliens were buying guns, but the mass media would never run the story.

I would just like to add to that, that if voting in voting in Washington State were like buying a gun in Washington State, any police officer with visual access to your vehicle’s license plate would be able to run your name through the state’s voting database and see who/what/which party you voted for throughout your life time of residence and then be legally able to enact a traffic stop based on what he found.

The Socialized Medicine Follies: Part 496209

Doc is the UK are coming out and saying “Just die, why doncha?”

Don’t treat the old and unhealthy, say doctors

Doctors are calling for NHS treatment to be withheld from patients who are too old or who lead unhealthy lives.

Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone.

Oh sure, the British Medical Association says they’re recoiling in horror over the idea, but they don’t control the policy or the budget.

The people who do don’t sound that phased

NHS Accused of 17,000 unnecessary deaths

More than 17,000 people receiving treatment in the UK have died unnecessarily because of the inadequacies of the NHS, it is claimed today.

The figure, in a paper published by the Taxpayers’ Alliance, is calculated using data given to the World Health Organisation. It compares the number of people who died prematurely, even though their illness was treatable, in five European countries.

“Thousands of people are dying every year thanks to Britain’s health service not delivering the standards people expect and receive in other European countries,” said Matthew Sinclair, a policy analyst at the alliance and author of the report.

“Billions of pounds have been thrown at the NHS but the additional spending has made no discernible difference to the long-term pattern of falling mortality … we need to learn lessons from European countries with healthcare systems that don’t suffer from political management, monopolistic provision and centralisation.”

However, the King’s Fund, an independent health thinktank, said that while the basic methodological approach of the study seemed to be valid, the conclusions were not placed in context. An extra 17,000 deaths might seem high, but that figure needed to be set against annual mortality, which was between 750,000 and one million deaths every year.

Oh, well, if it is only an extra 17,000 out of an average 1,000,000, then I guess nobody will mind losing them all that much. Except for, you know, their families and the like who may have wanted a better “medical outcome”.

Pro-socialized medicine bloggers get the same news feeds I do, but amazingly, they never write about these stories.

Especially when things like this happen

Cover All Kids enrollment 12,000 higher than expected

At this morning’s GMAP session on healthcare, the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) gave an update on the “Cover all Kids” health legislation from last year, which expanded state-funded healthcare for children whose parents make up to 250% of the federal poverty level. Starting January 2009, DSHS must cover all children under 300% percent of the federal poverty level (about $62,000 for a family of four).

As it turns out, more children have enrolled in the program than anticipated—a lot more. So where are all these kids coming from and why the discrepancy? According to DSHS, about 12,000 non-citizen children enrolled in the program in a two month period when the new eligibility standards kicked in.

It is notable that the fiscal note provided by the governor’s budget office and relied upon by the legislature when the bill passed assumed some 6,680 illegal immigrant children would be added to the state’s rolls by the end of the 2007-09 biennium. The June caseload forecast council raised the estimate to 16,825. No doubt that estimate will also have to be revised upward, based on initial enrollment data.

To top off the insanity, DSHS plans to pay a private marketing firm to advertise the program in an effort to recruit and enroll even more kids (most of which, are already enrolled in the state’s Basic Health program or carry private insurance).

Groups such as the EFF and people such as myself told our legislators that this is exactly what would happen if this bill passed. They either ho-hummed it away of pooh-poohed the idea.

So now how many citizen children will have to wait for care or even be denied because of their willing blindness?

Not Holy Water

Not garlic cloves, not sunlight or even a silver cross will make this horror stop (silver bullets are, as yet, untested).

Attorney General Edwards?

Illinois Democrats close to Sen. Barack Obama are quietly passing the word that John Edwards will be named attorney general in an Obama administration.

Installation at the Justice Department of multimillionaire trial lawyer Edwards would please not only the union leaders supporting him for president but organized labor in general. The unions relish the prospect of an unequivocal labor partisan as the nation’s top legal officer.

Nope, I’m still awake. Not a nightmare.

He’s having a seizure

Well of course he is! He’s a member of the “Seizure Party”

Venezuelan president warns he’ll seize private lenders who fail to meet government lending requirements

President Hugo Chavez threatened Saturday to take control of banks that fail to meet state-imposed lending requirements designed to benefit Venezuela’s farmers.

Chavez, who says he is leading Venezuela toward “21st century socialism,” accused many private banks of neglecting laws requiring them to set aside nearly a third of all loans for agriculture, mortgages and small businesses at favorable rates.

“The law must be applied,” said Chavez during a televised meeting with farmers. Any bank that doesn’t comply with these lending requirements “should be seized.”

…

The Venezuelan leader’s warnings come amid fluctuating food shortages and rising inflation, which reached 22.5 percent in 2007, the highest official rate in Latin America.

Chavez’s critics blame the shortages on government-imposed price controls, which were established in 2003 as a means of fighting rising consumer prices.

Food staples covered by the controls – sugar, cooking oil, bread, milk, black beans, eggs, beef and chicken – are sporadically hard to find in supermarkets, and many retailers predict the shortages are likely to persist as long as the price controls remain in place.

Government officials have attributed the shortages to greed among retailers, accusing them of hoarding products for months to later sell them at inflated prices.

During Saturday’s meeting, Chavez said that “contraband” – illegal exports to neighboring countries – was partly to blame for the shortages.

Which leads to this

Venezuelan troops seize food

Venezuela’s top food company has accused troops of illegally seizing more than 500 tonnes of food from its trucks as part of President Hugo Chavez’s campaign to stem shortages.

The leftist Chavez this week created a state food distributor and loosened some price controls, seeking to end months of shortages for staples like milk and eggs that have caused long lines and upset his supporters in the OPEC nation.

The highly publicized campaign has also included government crackdowns on accused smuggling, with the military seizing 1,600 tonnes of food and sending 1,200 troops to the border with Colombia.

Jose Anzola, a director of food company Alimentos Polar, told reporters that troops stopped 27 of its trucks over the last three days and described the seizures as “illegal, arbitrary and irresponsible.”

Troops said they halted the transport of 350 tonnes of food to states along the Colombian border on suspicion of smuggling, he said. Another 165 tonnes were impounded in an eastern state on accusations of hoarding, he added.

Yes, when the truck is marked as a food company truck and the boxes are marked “Eggs” and “Milk”, that sure is some crafty smuggling.

Pirate Saturday

Saturday was a good day, and I didn’t even need the Fed to mail me a check to move the economy forward (just my employer: note to those collecting welfare).

Went to BillyBob’s Offroad to lay down the green on the Jeep lift parts (aka: my pirate ship).

Took a swing through a local “Jewelry and Coin Shop” and found that while he didn’t carry a whole lot of coin, I was able to pry a few pieces of eight from his fingers to add to my collection (aka: my pirate treasure)

P1270016.JPG
Culled Morgans are relatively easy to find, relatively cheap and rather easy to stack.

I also got a lead as to where I can sail the ship for local gold coinage.

My last stop was at a new (to me) ye olde ale shoppe.

99 Bottles is the specialty beer retailer I spoke of yesterday. A coworker had raved about them and I arrived to find out that he had understated his case.

Fourteen doors of brews from all over the world.

store_coolers.jpg
And a corner of even more specialty brews.

store_shelves.jpg
Now y’all don’t even have an excuse not to visit!

I spoke to the owner about my favorite brew of all time: Sam Adams’ Old Fezziwig Ale. It is an October through December special edition beer that I have somehow already run out of. He pointed me to a couple of possible replacements and I went and made up a mixed sixpack of a few bottles of “tasty”, two of which got toasted to Chad’s new addition. The store also has empty cases so that folks can make up a “mixed case”.
P1270005.JPG
From left to right:

Left Handed Brewery’s Snowbound Winter Ale. The first selection pointed out by the store owner.

A pint of 8.6% ale does one hell of a number on your ability to balance. Made in Longmont, CO., it too is seasonal. But I can buy it in quantity if necessary.

Obolon Porter from Fastov, Ukraine. Only in pints, but I don’t mind.

Maritime Pacific Brewery of (Ballard) Seattle delivers their Nightwatch Dark Ale, which is the closest to the Old Fezziwig I’ve had and was also pointed to me by the shop owner. I’ll be grabbing a case of this next payday.

Arrogant Bastard Oaked Ale (Escondido, CA). Yes, another dark ale. Per the description card (all beers on hand have a description card below their place in the cooler) this one should be very tasty.

Scuttlebutt Brewery of Everett, WA. has this wicked little Porter.

I wouldn’t mind one bit if Western Washington/Seattle begins to be known for their beers instead of that demon piss drink “coffee”.

Sinebrychoff Brewery of Kerava, Finland and their heavy Porter. At 7.2%, I imagine only a couple of these will do.

Hit the ye olde ale shoppe’s link and take a look around. No shipping, but he’s got all kinds of links.

Congratulations are in order

Our good man Chad

Originator of these

BrotherIsADirtyLegy.jpg
Stopped by to let us know that he’s been reading some Ayoob and that half of his “Ribbit” was going to a tactical pistol and the other half to diapers for his new daughter.

No pics as of yet, but I would keep my eyes peeled here for updates, most likely after his current schedule subsides.

In the mean time, you can leave your congrats in the comments here.

I can already see his and The Heartless Libertarian’s kids raisin’ hell together.

But at least they’ll be singing the right song in detention.

Now, if’n y’all don’t mind, I’ve got to go buy me a special brew to toast Chad and his family with tonight (and finally buy some Jeep parts).

I keep hearing frogs

Ribbit. Ribbit. Rebbit. Rebbate. Rebate.

Oh, its that bullshit rebate chatter. Looks as though SanFranNan and the Bohner-man have kissed and made up a crap deal that is going to toss me some change.

While I do love getting my own money back, the time the government has been holding onto it it has lost like 5% of its value. The Check will say $300, but it’ll only be worth $285.

Oh hell yes I’ll take. I’m not one of those libs who says we don’t pay enough taxes. Though I do wonder how many of them will not cash theirs? (Answer: None). Maybe the Congressional Repubs shouldn’t have caved on the giving of cash to people who don’t pay taxes. That way the leftards could have redistributed some wealth that actually fucking belonged to them.

If the Dems and their media bedmates weren’t trying so hard to talk down the economy for the past four years, finally geysering with the housing market adjustment, then we wouldn’t even be here talking about the possibility of a need for a “stimulant” package.

And if the people on both sides of the aisle weren’t all blundering asshats they’d be able to read their own Congressional Budget Office report telling them that doing nothing is the best course of action.

But its an election year, so bend over folks. Inflation and teenagers demanding their portion of the check are comin’ round the bend.

Oddly enough, France’s Sarkozy has figured out a much better way of stopping both inflation and recovering a national economy: Freeze Public Spending!

How cheese-curdlingly novel, Qui?

Seeing as how $300 ain’t much to buy a firearm with, I was going to buy ammo with it. Then I thought about Jeep parts.

But after thinking about reality, I think I’ll buy something just a bit more shiny.

Like two rolls of these? Or maybe even this? Or maybe a combo of both? Yes, I like that last answer.

So, what’ll you be doing with your money that the gov’t’s been so kindly holding on to for you?

You like them

You can have them.

Israel is ready and willing to wash their hands of the palestinians

Washington, Cairo, and Jerusalem are expressing “concern” regarding the flow of hundreds of thousands of Gazans into Egypt, testing border agreements that have existed since Israel completely withdrew from the heavily populated strip in 2005. Some Israeli officials, nevertheless, saw an “opportunity” in yesterday’s event, suggesting that responsibility for Gaza’s humanitarian situation should be shifted to Egypt.

While the anti-Israel left will try and play this off either as “If you love them so much, why don’t you marry them?” childishness or a dropped “responsibility”, I believe that this is the best thing they could have said about it.

If the Egyptians think Israel treats the palis so bad, make their Muslim brothers take better care of them.

Of course, history shows us how the palis Muslim brothers treat them, which is why the UN will condemn Israel for “letting” the palis stream across the border instead of the palis for blowing up the barrier.

Oh wait, they’re already doing that.
