Things to Remember

Or, Good Things to Remind your political representative of.

Murdoc at GunPundit points to some very interesting, and quite probably very unknown facts from Outdoor Life

• Spending by hunters and anglers is more than the revenues of Microsoft, Google, eBay and Yahoo—combined! ($76 billion vs. $73.6 billion).

• More people hut and fish than watch the nightly newscasts of the three major networks—ABC, CBS, NBC. (34 million vs. 27 million)

• Hunters spend more on their activity than the total revenues of McDonald’s ($23 billion vs. $20 billion).

• All this spending adds up to support close to 600,000 jobs—more than the number of people employed by McDonald’s corporation.

• Hunters spend $2.4 billion on guns and rifles annually.

• Every year hunters and shooters pay millions in Federal excise taxes: $5.3 billion since 1939. In 2007 hunters and shooters paid $233 million in excise taxes. In fact they annually provide more than 80% of the funding for most state fish and wildlife agencies.

• Through Federal Duck Stamp purchases, hunters have generated more than $700 million, all of which goes in to the National Wildlife Refuge System. This money has been used to purchase more than 5 million acres of land for outdoor recreation and wildlife watching opportunities around the country.

• 80% of sportsmen consider themselves “likely voters”. 8 in 10 sportsmen state that a candidate’s position on sportsmen’s issues is important in determining whom they will vote for.

• 73% of Americans approve of hunting.

• Only 3% of Americans live the animal rights philosophy.

Yet the animal rights/eco-socialists get to set policy that the rest of us have to live by. Talk about gunnies not doing their civic duty.

Also, Caleb at Ahab points to a few things from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. I’ll just point out one of these and you can read th rest

NICS Background Checks Up 5.3% in January

Christmas? No, that was the month before January.

Let’s see the bigots try and explain that one away while telling the MSM than “The Gun Culture” is in decline.

UPDATE: It looks as though Mr. Completely has the dates set of the 3rd Annual Gun Blogger’s Rendezvous in Reno, NV.

Believe it or don’t I’m actually going to make it this year. The wife has given me the thumbs up to go (provided I fly and not drive…grr) and I feel really crappy about bailing on the first two year’s events that I’m going to bite the bullet, so to speak, and let the TSA search my person without beating them senseless for being bad actors in the Big Brother production of Security Theater (though I promise to say mean things about them upon my return).

How was that for a run-on sentence?

Anyway, with Boomershoot, The Rendezvous, and spending part of August in Montana doing a few gunnie things, I think I can say that I am solidly in the above dollar figures listed above (though neither the Rendezvous or Boomershoot are actually “expensive”). And if I had more available vacation time, I’d be doing more.

She might

Want to get Ezra Levant on the line.

The State of New Mexico apparently missed his statement to the Canadian Human Rights Commission

The case of a Christian photographer who refused to photograph a same-sex “commitment ceremony”, was heard before the New Mexico Human Rights Division on Monday.

A same-sex couple asked Elaine Huguenin, co-owner with her husband of Elane Photography, to photograph a “commitment ceremony” that the two women wanted to hold. Huguenin declined because her Christian beliefs are in conflict with the message communicated by the ceremony.

The same-sex couple filed a complaint with the New Mexico Human Rights Division, which is now trying Elane Photography under state anti discrimination laws for sexual orientation discrimination.

Whatever happened to freedom of association?

To be clear, I don’t care about the couple and their ceremony. They could have a ceremony a week with 200 other same-sex couples and it wouldn’t bother me a bit. Happiness if golden. More power to them. Nor to I care for Mrs. Huguenin’s opinion of the ceremony.

But if she doesn’t like it, and doesn’t want to do it because it offends whatever belief structure she has, there should be no punishment other than the word of mouth the couple whom she refused to take photos of can spread. Certainly, this is not government’s job.

Less Smart

Wow. Just, wow.

Big Brother. McCarthyism. The patience of Job.

Don’t count on your typical teenager to nod knowingly the next time you drop a reference to any of these. A study out today finds that about half of 17-year-olds can’t identify the books or historical events associated with them.

Hit the link to see what else they missed.

But this is the worst part of the article

The findings probably won’t sit well with educators, who say record numbers of students are taking college-level Advanced Placement history, literature and other courses in high school.

“Not all is woe in American education,” says Trevor Packer of The College Board, which oversees Advanced Placement.

We’ve heard multiple times in the past that even these AP students are having to be remedially taught basic subjects once they actually enter college. I took all four offered AP classes per year in high school, and didn’t then and still don’t consider myself as competently educated as I should have been. I only took those classes because the standard rate classes were so mind-numbingly slow. They were still teaching basic spelling to the senior class.

It isn’t that today’s children are being born stupid. They’re just having their heads stuffed with feel-good pap instead of what they need their empty vessel-like heads filled with.

Now, I’m not sitting here and saying that the teachers of today aren’t the best and brightest, though it is rather obvious that some decent number of them need to find a new vocation. Too bad the teacher’s unions think that once they get their foot in the door, they should be allowed to do whatever for 20 years with no test of their ability whatsoever.
But from what I can see, very few of those getting paid to “Administer” the kids of today would not be best described as “The Best” or “The Brghtest”.

“Dinosaur” computer stalls Seattle school’s plans

An aging computer — so old that the University of Washington has an early model on display as a museum piece — stands between the Seattle School Board and the changes it wants to make in how the district assigns students to schools.

The computer, called a VAX, was first sold in the late 1970s. The district still uses two VAXes of late-’80s to mid-90s vintage. They use old-fashioned disks and stand about 5 feet tall. Staff members sometimes look for used replacement parts on eBay.

To keep tweaking the VAXes, district staff warned last week, is risky and a waste of time. To replace them, however, likely comes with a cost that made School Board members cringe: a delay of about a year in putting the new assignment plan into action.

Last year, the SCOTUS told the Seattle School District that they couldn’t use a student’s race to assign them a school. The District has apparently come up with “A New Plan” that the old computer system can’t handle. They are waiting for, you guessed it, “More Money” to get the system online. Maybe in a year or so, they say.

How fucking hard is it to get three maps: One for Elementary schools, one for Middle Schools and one for High Schools, and draw a radius around a school and tell those students that if they live within that radius then that is the school they will attend? Part of my previous duties at my current place of employment is to map out route areas for ‘da garbageman. I’ll take 25% of what they’re planning on paying for their new pooter and get it planned out before school gets out this summer.

Oh screw it! Somebody, PLEASE, buy the Seattle School District a fucking Garmin.

If you look closely

You can even see CAIR’s hand up ABC’s ass

From LGF

ABC News does their best to set up the “dumb American bigots” at a roadside Texas bakery, with one actor wearing misogynistic radical Muslim garb and provoking the yokels as another actor pretends to be a Muslim-hater, as a crew films with a hidden camera, all designed and staged to show how “Islamophobic” Americans are.

This whole ridiculous shell game appears to have been staged at the behest of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Saudi-funded radical Islamic front group listed as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation Hamas funding case; they’re cited repeatedly as authorities in this absurd companion piece, utterly devoid of context on their radical Islamic connections, of course.

Puppets.

I’ll have nightmares for a month now

Hal_10000 at Right Thinking catches Andrew Sullivan’s latest attempt to scare the piss out of people

A president Obama should offer the first SCOTUS vacancy to Senator Clinton. It’s perfect for her: she gets to lord it over others, she’s a sharp lawyer, it appeals to her vanity, she doesn’t have to get elected, and as a sitting senator, she’d be a shoo-in. The base would love it.

While it is true that black is slimming, I’m not sure she’d go for it.

I’m in the Green Zone

Now, click this link to have it explained.

Technically, I’m not on that map, but if I stood on my rooftop I could hit the lower left edge of it with a rock

And if I was on my rooftop throwing rocks, maybe I should have my ability to own firearms looked at. But that is neither here nor there.

Hit up  your favorite map program and map out all the appropriate selected locations. You’re very likely in a green zone too.

More violent gun bigots

We’ve all discussed it, and the gunnie community is pretty much in agreement on the current theory that gun bigots want everyone disarmed is that they believe we are as mentally out of control of our emotions as they are.

Yet another example: The Mayor of New Orleans, Ray Nagin

No one can accuse New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin of hiding his emotions. During a live TV interview, he told two reporters that he wanted to have “a good one on one” with their boss in the parking lot because of an upcoming report on his work schedule.

Nagin also complained about the “vile, angry people” who comment on blogs. Asked if he’s worried about his safety, the mayor said: “If somebody approach me wrong, I’m going to cold cock them. That’s the bottom line. You can come with that foolishness if you want, but you’ll see a side of Ray Nagin that you haven’t seen.”

Even if I believed that I had a city full of people as out of control, in more ways than one, as myself, i still wouldn’t have ordered their firearms to be taken away.

And making me seem like the reasonable one makes him look like his projection problems are very, very deep.

What are they getting at?

There has been a whole lotta hoopla over on the leftosphere about the lack of pat down searches at Obama events.

So much so that their pals in the MSM have taken notice.

The only reason I can think of as to why is that they’ve bought into the idea of Obama’s martyrdom, which a few weeks ago they were pooh-poohing to high heaven.

Obama made a stink when they tried to stick him with Secret Service protection last summer, only giving in when his Pastor said he should. I wouldn’t put it past him to tell the guys protecting him to not treat his supporters like would-be assasins.

I also wouldn’t put it past him to keep mum about this to try and create sideline hype about his campaign.

But again, why all the hype from the leftosphere? Are they going start Troofing out and trying to blame this on the Bush Administration?

Total drama queens, I swear.

Speaking of their drama queeneeness, the “Democratic Party” are acting like little bitches now that Nader has officially tossed his hat in the ring.

Democrats say they will work behind the scenes — and use court challenges, if necessary — to try to thwart his access to ballots.

The immediate question for Democrats is whether they’ll be as ruthless as they were in 2004 in throwing procedural obstacles in the way of Nader’s access to the ballot in key states.

Nader has a pending lawsuit against the Democratic National Committee on the issue and recently told Politico that he would make ballot access a central cause of a presidential campaign, which he restated on television Sunday morning.

Just remember this the next time some chucklehead tries to tell you the their party is the only one which “stands up for democracy”.

Know anyone with international sailing law experience?

I think there may be some clients in Japan for them

Anti-whaling activists from the hard-line Sea Shepherd Conservation Society admitted Monday to bugging Japan’s whaling fleet with high-tech tracking devices in order to run them down.

Sea Shepherd’s vessel Steve Irwin caught up with the Japanese whaling fleet near the Shackleton Ice Shelf on Saturday, having returned to Antarctic waters from a refueling pit stop in Melbourne, Australia.

Sea Shepherd leader Paul Watson said the bugs had been planted on the Japanese harpoon boat Yushin Maru No. 2 when two of its crew boarded the vessel last month.

“That’s why when we left Melbourne it only took us nine days to find them. We went straight towards them,” Watson said.

“I think it’s really funny. They are probably ripping the ship apart right now trying to find them, but they aren’t going to find them.”

Further tracking devices had also been planted on some of the other Japanese vessels, Watson said.

“We are not saying which ones, or how we did it, but we have the ability to follow the fleet and that’s what we are doing right now,” Watson said.

I have little doubt that if the Japanese MSDF “bugged” the Sea Shepherd ships, that Paul Waston would run to the nearest lawyer. But this is funny to him.

RNS Quote of the Day: 02/26/08

An armed society is a polite society.

They all were very polite – as people are prone to be around so many guns.
