Imagine That!

Turning right every now and then!

Per usual the start of the Formula 1 has snuck up on me. Mark your calendars for the day after tomorrow, in Melbourne.

In his usual style, Tim Blair helped remind me.

For just one week every year, the high-pitched shrieking noise coming out of Melbourne is produced by something other than Catherine Deveny:

“March is the month of the revolting, corrosive, environmental and cultural vandalism that is the Grand Prix.”

Hit the link to read the rest of the post, including some useful fun facts on Deveny and Formula 1 cars.

Personally, I somewhat blame NASCAR for America’s turn to the left.

Epic Fail

Thankfully

fail-loldog-oops.jpg
Back in early February I posted about the attempt by the state legislature to collect and unionize the child care worker across the state.

Again, thankfully, they were unsuccessful.

After years of success at passing laws that allowed tens of thousands of low-wage, service-sector workers to unionize, labor groups hit a wall — or at least a speed bump — this year in the Legislature.

Democratic leaders in the Senate last week pulled the plug on a bill that would have extended collective-bargaining rights to some 12,000 day-care-center workers. Lawmakers also shot down bills that would have allowed many of the state’s foster parents and about 4,000 adult-family-home workers to unionize.

“There seems to be a general uneasiness among many people about the concept of collective bargaining in these nontraditional areas,” said Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle, chairwoman of the Senate Labor, Commerce, Research and Development Committee.

Anything Kohl-Welles fails at is a success for the citizen. She of the unending gun-bigotry will try anything to make her donations from hyper-leftist groups happy.

In the past six years, unions have added more than 65,000 members by pushing through new collective-bargaining laws.

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has led the way. Under the new laws, the SEIU has organized nearly 40,000 state-paid home-health-care and child-care workers, helping it become the state’s largest union. The Washington Federation of State Employees also added thousands of members by winning new bargaining rights.

The rapid growth — adding millions of dollars in additional dues — has vastly expanded the unions’ political clout. That, in turn, has led to hundreds of millions of dollars in increased wages and benefits for the newly unionized workers.

And thousands of dollars to extremist left-wing politicians like Kohl-Welles.

The employees in the education fields who were forced to join unions or lose their careers in Washington State were the ones who filed the lawsuit that was successful in halting the unions from using their dues for political causes without member input.

The citizen had to push back against the union’s and Kohl-Welles extremist vision of a union-run state.

Hugo and The Dems

It could be a decent band name, though I doubt I’d like the music.

The Chavez Democrats

What is it about Democrats and Hugo Chávez? Even as the Venezuelan strongman was threatening war last week against Colombia, Congress was threatening to hand him a huge strategic victory by spurning Colombia’s free trade overtures to the U.S.

This isn’t the first time Democrats have come to Mr. Chávez’s aid, but it would be the most destructive. The Venezuelan is engaged in a high-stakes competition over the political and economic direction of Latin America. He wants the region to follow his path of ever greater state control of the economy, while assisting U.S. enemies wherever he can. He’s already won converts in Bolivia and Ecuador, and he came far too close for American comfort in Mexico’s election last year.

Meanwhile, Colombian President Álvaro Uribe is embracing greater economic and political freedom. He has bravely assisted the U.S fight against narco-traffickers, and he now wants to link his country more closely to America with a free-trade accord. As a strategic matter, to reject Colombia’s offer now would tell everyone in Latin America that it is far more dangerous to trust America than it is to trash it.

Yet Democrats on Capitol Hill are doing their best to help Mr. Chávez prevail against Mr. Uribe. Even as Mr. Chávez was doing his war dance, Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus was warning the White House not to send the Colombia deal to the Hill for a vote without the permission of Democratic leaders. He was seconded by Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel, who told Congress Daily that “they don’t have the votes for it, it’s not going to come on the floor,” adding that “what they [the White House] don’t understand it’s not the facts on the ground, it’s the politics that’s in the air.”

Ahh, yes, “The Politics”. Putting the best outcome aside for the benefit of keeping the cash flowing in from the Democrat donors. Unions.

Consider this an open invitation to suggest a band name alternative for the post title.

RNS Quote of the Day: 03/11/08

I know a few people who feel this exact same way since the decision in California came down.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it here on GunPundit, but Murdoc and his wife homeschool their two kids. It’s not right for everyone, but it’s right for our family.

Here’s a free bit of advice: Don’t be the person who shows up to tell Murdoc he can’t homeschool his kids.

Let me know if that advice sounds slightly threatening. I’ll reword it so that it’s very threatening.

Turn the Beat Around

Maybe we should start calling these “Rovian Tactics”

They happen everywhere Rove goes, and I think it’d be fitting.

Hey Hil, need a laxative?

Inside blockage for Team Clinton. You figure out the metaphor.

Clinton-papers released blocked

Federal archivists at the Clinton Presidential Library are blocking the release of hundreds of pages of White House papers on pardons that the former president approved, including clemency for fugitive commodities trader Marc Rich.

The archivists’ decision, based on guidance provided by Bill Clinton that restricts the disclosure of advice he received from aides, prevents public scrutiny of documents that would shed light on how he decided which pardons to approve from among hundreds of requests.

Clinton’s legal agent declined the option of reviewing and releasing the documents that were withheld, said the archivists, who work for the federal government, not the Clintons.

Take a double dose, here doesn’t come another.

Disney CEO Shouldn’t Put Personal Politics and Favorite Presidential Candidate Over Shareholders; Shareholders Urged in New YouTube Video to Attend Annual Meeting and Demand to Know Why Disney Isn’t Selling ‘The Path to 9/11’ DVD

The Free Enterprise Action Fund released a YouTube video entitled “Disney for Hillary or Shareholders?” calling for shareholders to demand answers from Disney CEO Robert Iger at the upcoming annual shareholder meeting as to why the company is not selling the DVD of the ABC TV miniseries “The Path to 9/11.” The shareholder meeting is on March 6, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Disney-owned ABC TV broadcast of “The Path to 9/11” unleashed a firestorm of criticism from leading political figures in the Democratic Party who urged Disney to cancel or edit the program. But the public’s reaction to the program was overwhelmingly positive when ABC aired it September 2006: the miniseries had almost 28 million viewers, and earned seven Emmy nominations. Despite the encouraging response, Disney lost $40 million on the program because it was shown without commercial sponsorship.

Project loses money. DVD sales can help cut losses. Big boss supports Presidential cadidate whose husband was President at the time. DVD not released or even manufactured.

Hmm.

Hopefully, legal proceedings will be the laxative on the first load in the chute, and a few hundred angry shareholders will fill that role in the second load.

Jealousy, Permitted

So, last week I get an email from The Mom about the visit I was to make this last weekend. Apparently, The Step-Dad had acquired a new toy, but that she was not permitted to tell me what it was. Since they live within two miles of Cabelas, it could have been just about anything, so my anticipation level was right up there.

Let’s just say that when I arrived, I was impressed. And now you can be too.

Charger01.jpg
Cabelas had only received two Chargers and by the time he called they only had one left. And they wanted around $325 for it.

However, and a little oddly, local small shop Federal Way Discount Guns (who really need to enter the digital age so I can link  to them) had gotten six Chargers from Ruger. However, they too only had one left by the time he called. They only wanted $285 for theirs (it is not unusual for them to beat even the big box stores on price, which is why I want to link them), so he had them hold it for an hour while he drove up there.

He has a Bushnell 28mm Red/Green Dot optic on it. It is actually the exact same one that will soon grace the top my 1187 so I can move the EOTech elsewhere.

P7110006.JPG
The Step-Dad already has his order in on the Ruger LCP, and when he gets that in I’ll tell y’all how that went shortly thereafter. Btw, David, he says we can take the Charger to Boomershoot and play with it if’n you want.

I have a not so clever title for this one

But it is not very original, and would simply be namecalling.

Dicks says he’ll block efforts to lift gun ban

With a showdown looming, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks says he’s prepared to block any effort by the administration to lift the current ban on carrying loaded weapons in national parks.

It’s not an idle threat.

As chairman of the House Appropriations interior subcommittee, Dicks oversees the National Parks Service’s annual budget and is in a position to prevent the administration from dropping the Reagan-era ban. While the Washington Democrat is usually reluctant to add legislative provisions to his spending bill, he is ready to make an exception in this case even if it prompts a presidential veto.

Because shutting down the national parks was so popular in 1995. The guy doesn’t even care to look at the facts in this case, he just grabs his Brady/VPC talking points and speaks into the mic.

Current regulations ban loaded weapons in the federal parks and refuges. Unloaded weapons can be carried if they are locked in a safe place such as a car trunk.

Dicks said his counterpart in the Senate, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has told him she would use her position as chairman of the Senate Appropriations interior subcommittee to also block any changes in the current regulations.

“Permitting loaded firearms to be carried or used within our national parks or wildlife refuges would be a radical, unprecedented change that would likely upset the delicate balance that exists between wildlife and park visitors in these areas,” Dicks and Feinstein said in a letter to Kempthorne.

Oh yes, the “balance”. Currently, cougars, bears and wolves are allowed to possess their (high-tensile strength, tactical) claws and (concealed, mouth-mounted, assault) teeth whilst stalking humans as food.

Meanwhile, I get stopped and questioned if I have a pointed stick without a marshmallow on it.

But by far, the quote that makes Dicks a “Dick” is this one

“Everyone knows when you have guns, bad things happen,” Dicks said in an interview.

Because no one has ever saved a life with a firearm. Never. Ever. Just ask Dick. I mean Norm.

Btw, I found those three links in 30 seconds with simple Google searches. If using Google for research is good enough for gun-bigots, then they should have to respect it when the “research” doesn’t go their way.

Paying for the privilege

To speak to a human representative of the State

Waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to update a car registration in Virginia will soon cost an extra $5. The Virginia General Assembly on Wednesday sent Governor Tim Kaine (D) a bill that imposes a $5 tax on motorists who require in-person assistance for registration services. The bill’s sponsor, state Senator Ryan McDougle (R-Hanover County), believes that imposing a toll will reduce congestion at office locations where wait times can often stretch for hours.

I wouldn’t really mind this if it meant fewer state employees to pay for, but there is nothing in the bill that mentions that.

Personally, I’ve been doing mine via the “Checks in the Mail” method for years now, not being one to trust the State of Washington with my credit card data.

This will spread, rapidly, if my instincts are true. Next up, a $1 tax per letter written to your elected representatives.

Of course, that may just be my being unhappy to even have to pay for postage to do that. Like it would be that difficult to the USPS to have some addresses that don’t require postage. Yeah, I’ve got email, but I don’t like them having a delete button.
