Dicks says he’ll block efforts to lift gun ban
With a showdown looming, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks says he’s prepared to block any effort by the administration to lift the current ban on carrying loaded weapons in national parks.
It’s not an idle threat.
As chairman of the House Appropriations interior subcommittee, Dicks oversees the National Parks Service’s annual budget and is in a position to prevent the administration from dropping the Reagan-era ban. While the Washington Democrat is usually reluctant to add legislative provisions to his spending bill, he is ready to make an exception in this case even if it prompts a presidential veto.
Because shutting down the national parks was so popular in 1995. The guy doesn’t even care to look at the facts in this case, he just grabs his Brady/VPC talking points and speaks into the mic.
Current regulations ban loaded weapons in the federal parks and refuges. Unloaded weapons can be carried if they are locked in a safe place such as a car trunk.
Dicks said his counterpart in the Senate, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., has told him she would use her position as chairman of the Senate Appropriations interior subcommittee to also block any changes in the current regulations.
“Permitting loaded firearms to be carried or used within our national parks or wildlife refuges would be a radical, unprecedented change that would likely upset the delicate balance that exists between wildlife and park visitors in these areas,†Dicks and Feinstein said in a letter to Kempthorne.
Oh yes, the “balance”. Currently, cougars, bears and wolves are allowed to possess their (high-tensile strength, tactical) claws and (concealed, mouth-mounted, assault) teeth whilst stalking humans as food.
Meanwhile, I get stopped and questioned if I have a pointed stick without a marshmallow on it.
But by far, the quote that makes Dicks a “Dick” is this one
“Everyone knows when you have guns, bad things happen,†Dicks said in an interview.
Because no one has ever saved a life with a firearm. Never. Ever. Just ask Dick. I mean Norm.
Btw, I found those three links in 30 seconds with simple Google searches. If using Google for research is good enough for gun-bigots, then they should have to respect it when the “research” doesn’t go their way.

Also, don’t forget that National Parks are very often used to grow pot (some of my friends back in high school wandered off trail and found some in Yosemite back around 1990), and pot growers can be quite protective of their plants. Violently so.
Interesting that Di-Fi said that she doesn’t want people to have loaded guns in wildlife refuges. I wonder if the good people at the Waccanaw National Wildlife Refuge would have anything to say about this, since they allow hunting there…
