RNS Quote of the Sunday

I hope he doesn’t plan on switching parties

Who would you rather have in charge of the defense of the United States of America, a group of people who never served a day overseas in their life, or a guy who served his country honorably and has three Purple Hearts and a Silver Star on the battlefields of Vietnam?

DNC Chairman Howard Dean, March 2004

Ink

It is contagious.

Although, I seem to be immune to it. No new for over three years. The wife is starting to drop hints about it.

Interesting Question

Very interesting indeed.

Governments have goons. That’s what makes them governments rather than debating societies.

Even the governments of relatively free societies have them. I would like some guidance from my fellow goons now.Back in the 1990’s, when I first graduated the academy and became a cop, I thought I was going to go out and slay dragons. I also thought that I would not have to compromise any of my beliefs in order to do so. I can not have been the first libertarian to go into this line of work. However I did not originally sign up to be a drug warrior, tax collector, or the mailed fist of the ‘Mommy Knows Best’ state. Yet somehow, I occasionally end up being all three of those things. Most of the time, though, I think that we still do more good than harm.

But at what point do we actually do more harm than good for liberty? When is it time to quit?

Your answers to Samizdata.

I must say, this is similar to a question I’ve asked numerous enlisted and commissioned folks over the years.

For you guys who have been filling in the comments section and blogging about why you took the military oath, lets flip it around in this comments section: When is it time to stop taking orders/What orders would cause you to stop taking them?

Not to be a fuss about it, but some specifics would be best.

In Continuation: Part Two

Jimro took some time to lay out his reasons for joining the military here.

Also, MadRocketScientist wrote a followup post on his reasons here.

If you’re not familiar as to why these are important, see here. Check the comments there as well.

Don’t Stop Believing

Part the Turd

The Goracle was most likely frightened that he might be losing disciples what with the extended winter currently happening when he called up his big-gun media sycophants at CBS.

Self-avowed “P.R. agent for the planet” Al Gore says those who still doubt that global warming is caused by man – among them, Vice President Dick Cheney – are acting like the fringe groups who think the 1969 moon landing never really happened, or who once believed the world is flat.

Nice little title he’s given himself, eh?

That’s rich! Seeing as how it was “The Consensus” way back when who said the Earth was flat.

So I’m a “spherical denier” now, too? This guy really is an ass who needs to give it up in the face of new evidence and admit that humans aren’t changing the climate.

Or, he can make it easy and get on the bandwagon for Global Cooling.

Speaking of which, more snow today in the PacNW today. One full week after the start of Spring.

Also, I forgot to put this into yesterday’s Global Warming Death Cult post, but just a weekend or two ago a herd of Elk were spotted in the median where State Route 18 meets up with Interstate 90.

Not since those two roads were joined has the snowpack been known to have pushed elk down that low to find food. For those who know I-90 halfway well, that is west of the burg of North Bend by about 10 miles (aka: only 25 miles from Downtown Seattle). Thankfully, none of the weekend warriors who were skunked during the regular season took the opportunity to fill their tags.

If they had, they’d be bigger pukes than AssGore.

I’ve Heard of the Phrase

“Late for your own funeral.”

But I never thought I’d hear of someone who was

Nakhon Si Thammarat – Monks and guests who attended a funeral rite at Wat Lam Nao in Bang Khan district were thrown into a panic yesterday when the woman thought to be dead, and who they were praying for, appeared before them.

The sight of Duangkae Sudchu, the woman who was supposed to be in the coffin, sent many attending the rite sprinting from the scene.

It took some convincing by Mrs Duangkae before they realised that she was still alive and the body in the coffin was someone else.

I hope the fleeing guests didn’t later sue the funeral home for the costs of new underwear.

Gee, Could the Global Warming Models be Wrong?

Climate Skeptic points out what happens when a scientist actually thinks through the implications of the newest satellite data:

“What all the climate models suggest is that, when you’ve got warming from additional carbon dioxide, this will result in increased water vapour, so you’re going to get a positive feedback. That’s what the models have been indicating.

What this great data from the NASA Aqua satellite … (is) actually showing is just the opposite, that with a little bit of warming, weather processes are compensating, so they’re actually limiting the greenhouse effect and you’re getting a negative rather than a positive feedback….

I think they’re about to recognise that the models really do need to be overhauled and that when they are overhauled they will probably show greatly reduced future warming projected as a consequence of carbon dioxide….

The policy implications are enormous. The meteorological community at the moment is really just coming to terms with the output from this NASA Aqua satellite and (climate scientist) Roy Spencer’s interpretation of them. His work is published, his work is accepted, but I think people are still in shock at this point.”“

The Soundboard: Sad Passing Edition

I recently got the news that one of my regular stops is closing down.

After nearly 26 years as the homey basement hub and hangout for Seattle jazz musicians and fans, Bud’s Jazz Records is going out of business.”I just can’t keep it going anymore,” said James Rasmussen, a Seattle trumpet player and leader of the band the Jazz Police; Rasmussen bought the store from founder Bud Young in 2001.

Bud’s Jazz Records, at 102 S. Jackson St. in Pioneer Square, will be sorely missed by the local jazz community. Known for its unstinting support of local musicians, the store consistently plugged discs by Seattle artists — often unknown — and piles of their CDs crowded the counter.

The store was also known for supporting female jazz artists and sometimes displayed art on its walls.

People in the jazz community could always depend on running into someone they knew there, and conversations often ran hot and heavy about the preferences for one artist over another. There was always an album on the CD player to compete with — or support — the conversation.

The weekend of Boomershoot will be Bud’s last weekend in existence.

I’ll have to remember to not spend all my money in Idaho that week so that I can take one more trip to Bud’s Records.

Bag of Jewels – Lou Donaldson

I always walked out of Bud’s with a Bag of Jewel Cases and vinyl. Including the gem that is this album.

I held off

On posting about this fairy tale that nearly the entire leftosphere posted about yesterday in their effort to make sure the Fool-Aid drinking cultists don’t stop believing.

A chunk of Antarctic ice about seven times the size of Manhattan suddenly collapsed, putting an even greater portion of glacial ice at risk, scientists said Tuesday.Satellite images show the disintegration of a 160-square-mile chunk in western Antarctica that started Feb. 28. It was the edge of the Wilkins ice shelf and has been there for hundreds of years, maybe 1,500.

This is the result of global warming, said British Antarctic Survey scientist David Vaughan.

I’m not going to question Vaughan’s intelligence, but I do wonder just a little bit about his integrity.

He surely must know that the ice sheet he’s talking about flows like a river into the Antarctic ocean. He must also surely know that it is possible that the sheet was just too large for the pivot point where it connects to the terra firm to hold on to; The pivot being either too thin or the sheet too thick or a combination of the two.

Is this a big thing? Sure. Newsworthy even. Does it mean much? Nope. It is simply something we non-Global Warming Death Cultists call: Nature. (hit that link)

Look it up, Vaughan.

Speaking of the Cultists, nearly a foot of snow fell in the eastern side of King County last night, bringing out the call of “Weather Isn’t Climate!” across the local portion of the leftosphere. I’ll have to be reminding them of that quote come July, I’m sure.

Oddly enough, large portion of the rest of the county and the two counties north and south of King also got coated with the white stuff, though the urban Seattle Metro area was spared the horror.

Using the Global Warming Death Cultist’s logic, I am only to conclude that urban areas cause Global Warming. With this understanding, light suburban and rural property owners should see a rise in the value of their property as the city dwellers flee for their lives.

Or, it could just also have been the Rain Shadow caused by the Olympic Mountain Range working in Seattle’s favor.

Click the link. Imagine that: Provable science.
