RNS Quote of the Day: 06/16/08

I’ve gotten a number of responses from my call out last week for folks who could make to a “Town Hall Media Circus” that might be called up by gun bigot Mayor of Seattle, Greg Nickels.

One of the respondents, Marina, sent an email that contained our QotD

Sadly I have kept putting off getting my CCW here in King County (moved here this year) but I am going first thing tomorrow morning, and making sure Nickels knows that he inspired me to do it.

Marina

As is evidenced here, bigotry often creates the opposite reaction to what the bigot wanted. Congrats, Marina.

Unfortunately, it also makes other bigots react badly.

Council bans firearms in parks

Montesano is joining the ranks of cities banning firearms from their parks. The City Council has adopted a new parks ordinance describing activities prohibited in city parks. Among them is a ban on all firearms.

The council approved the new law by a split 4-3 vote on Tuesday. Earlier this week, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced a new policy banning firearms on all city property, including parks. Critics of Seattle’s policy said the move violates state law and the rights of legally authorized gun owners. Washington state law prohibits local governments from enacting gun laws that are stricter than state codes but does allow cities to ban guns from city-owned stadiums, convention centers and the workplace, where the city is the employer.

“You guys are working really hard to take away my right to carry a gun,” said Councilman Albert Collins. He said the city shouldn’t take away the constitutional rights of people who have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. “If we have a permit to carry it, we should be OK.”

Thank you, Councilman Collins.

While the city’s website lists no contact info for the City Council, the Mayor of Montesano, Ron Schillinger, can be contacted by phone (360) 249-3021 Ext#102 or by email

Also, I would like to add that I seem to have spoken too soon about the local media not supporting Nickels

Gun Free – Proud of it

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels’s executive order banning guns from Seattle Center, parks, community centers and city-run buildings is safe and sane public policy.
The next Folklife or Bumbershoot festival should be gun-free. Our citizens should not have to fear that an individual with mental problems will walk in, no questions asked, get into a fight and injure innocent people with a loaded gun.

Oh well. I’ve should have known better.

However, I do wonder what they’d say if Nickels passed an EO stating that the Times’ couldn’t be sold or read on city property. Methinks their opinion would be different.

Exactly who is the unhinged one in this discussion?

Once again, our favorite Pacific Northwest bigot and hatemonger, David Neiwert, shows his true colors.

The gunosphere, myself included, linked to this almost favorable story from last weekend on the topic of open carry. We showed surpise, and even a little disbelief at its appearance across the national news wires.

Neiwert showed none of these things. After giving up a couple of qualifiers, his father is an amateur gunsmith or some such (though in past conversations I remember him saying something about his dad working for Colt), and that he too is a gun owner, though only of display pieces/mementos, he goes and recto-cranially impacts himself in high style.

You hear a lot of this kind of nonsense from the gun lobby whenever there is some kind of horrendous massacre involving guns: “Oh, if only the victims had been allowed to carry guns openly, somebody could have stopped this from happening.”

Besides having watched too many bad action movies to understand the realities of gun play, none of these geniuses seem to have stopped to think about what a culture in which people openly and casually carry guns would look like. Every interpersonal conflict would take on life-and-death dimensions because of the constancy of the implicit threat of guns becoming part of the human equation. If you think we’re paranoid now, just wait.

“Open carry” advocates strike me as gun fetishists, people who are so enamored of the things that they lose sight of their humanity. Let’s be frank about what guns really are: you can dismiss them as mere tools that can be misused, but the fact is that they represent the ultimate power — the power to end another human being’s life. And when you hold that power in your hands, dispensed with the mere squeeze of a trigger, it can be a very seductive thing, especially for someone with a grudge against a world that has disempowered them.

More to the point, since guns inhere such power, they also invite their use. People who fetishize guns are never content, in the end, to simply own them. At some point, they feel compelled to wield the power they hold in their hands.

Yes, you read that correctly: Gun owners might actually take their guns out to the range and practice with them. Imagine that! Read down at the link a little further, and he insinuates that all law abiding gun owners are potential Columbine shooters, and makes the standard prediction of blood in the streets (that oddly, never actually come true).
We are the unhinged ones, he projects elegantly. We, the ones who have taken professional instruction on the use of our firearms. We who know just how much of a burden owning a firearm is, both legally and possibly emotionally, upon a citizen. We who have had our life’s history read by agents of federal, state county and city governments. We are the ones who need to be watched out for.

Not ol’ Dave, who has, as of the writing of this post, written two pieces for one of the most popular left-wing blogs stating that he is absolutely positive some “rightwing” nut job will assassinate Mr. BigHopeyChangey. Here is a quote from the latter of the two.

In any event, a pattern is already developing, ranging from the Klan fellows who promise that Obama will be shot to the white supremacists who are actually rooting for him to win because they’re certain he will fail. We’re hearing a lot of language from the racist and “Patriot” right indicating that they expect a Democratic president to enact policies (particularly regarding gun control) that will inspire “civil war.” Which means they are looking for excuses to act out.

As always with these folks, there’s a lot of projection going on here. Because even if a President Obama follows only the most moderate of liberal agendas, the far right will look upon those policies as cause for “civil war.” That was how they responded to Bill Clinton, after all — a white male Southerner with generally conservative leanings. One can only imagine how a liberal black man from Illinois would fare.

Do notice, according to Neiwert, if you believe that there is no such thing as “sensible gun control”, then you are an extremist. Also, even if you have just general knowledge of the Democrat Party being the party of gun control, you are not only an extremist, but probably also a racist.

As I said last week, I do hope that, if elected, Obama is a complete failure as a President.

I hope that none of his policies are signed into law. I hope that he embarrasses himself on the world stage, repeatedly. I hope that he is such and unsuccessful President that in the 2012 election, he loses just as America’s worst President in modern history, Jimmeh Cahtah, did in 1980. I also hope that Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin, becomes the 2012 Republican nominee and that she picks Louisiana Governor, Bobby Jindal to be her VP.
Aside from those bits of hope, I hope that Obama finds the job too demanding, and resigning before his second year is up, handing off the Presidency to his VP, who I suspect will be not only more experienced than himself, but also more reasonable in policy.

None of this is done out of hate. No one else who I know hopes similarly does it out of hate either. We merely disagree on policy issues with the man and wish for him to not be successful.

David and his sycophants, on the other hand, have always been hateful little creatures whose only wish is for the destruction of all things they consider “conservative” (you’d be surprised by their list too), which they see as a disease that must be eradicated from the face of the Earth so that pleasantness may reign in their utopia.

Unlike the bumpersticker slogan, Liberalism/Progressivinsm is not, in and of itself, a mental disorder. But you do have to have a mental disorder to join the club. Minimally, you must have a deep seated sense of victimhood paired with a hatred of the success of those around you, topped off with a undying need for retribution from those who believe differently.

Unpossible

No, not another murder in a haven of onerous gun control laws. This involves the harassment of polar bears.

Companies get OK to annoy polar bears

Less than a month after declaring polar bears a threatened species because of global warming, the Bush administration is giving oil companies permission to annoy and potentially harm them in the pursuit of oil and natural gas.

The Fish and Wildlife Service issued regulations this week providing legal protection to seven oil companies planning to search for oil and gas in the Chukchi Sea off the northwestern coast of Alaska if “small numbers” of polar bears or Pacific walruses are incidentally harmed by their activities over the next five years.

Environmentalists said the new regulations give oil companies a blank check to harass the polar bear.

First of all, yes, that was the real title of the article. They decided against going with popular public opinion and let folks now via the title that we are now, however slowly, probably going to turn our nation’s oil taps on, and instead went for the whining eco-angle.

Secondly, exactly how do you harass a half-ton omnivore that has six-inch claws and can fit your head in its mouth without even opening its jaw all the way?

Methinks the curious beast will find the presence of humans more “entertaining” than anything else.

It’s an odd reference

But an honest one.

After a long Saturday morning and bringing another one of these home, I can now be called Phil “Three Safes” Jackson.

It’s like the damn things are breeding in my home.

For those not getting the reference (here), get your own safes program, you fairy.

Rodger Schlong had this posted up under the title “Why We Win”

I agree wholeheartedly, and though you all might like the pic to add to your collections.

RNS Quote of the Day: 06/14/08

Vanderluen of the American Digest blog, found this comment over at the Daily Kos Animal Farm and Petting Zoo less than an hour after the announcement of the passing of Tim Russert

I don’t want to see MS-NBC putting Chris “Tweety” Matthews in the Meet the Press catbird seat, just so he can run for Specter’s PA senate seat like a good Republican. Meet the Press had enough Republican insider from Russert.

Let’s see Olberman running Meet the Press.

And that isn’t even the worst of it. Don’t click his link if you get pissed at people speaking ill of the dead.

What is a little lie among friends?

The normally reasonable, and honest, Kevin Drum of the Washington Monthly’s Political Animal blog appears to have done a little picture editing on a graph that was put out by the Tax Policy Center.

Kevin Drum’s

DrumGraph.gif
The original

tpc_1_2.jpg
Both graphs are click to enbiggen.

Now, you’ll notice that the bars for the “All” classification are oddly missing from Drum’s graph.

I have checked this post at the TaxProf blog, and also the pdf file found at the link Drum includes in his post, and both of them are intact.

So I am wondering, because a lie by omission is still a lie, and if Kevin Drum thinks so much about Mr. BigHopeyChangey’s tax plan, then why does he feel he needs to lie about it?

Granted, Drum’s post is pointed towards how Obama’s tax cuts will soak “The Rich”, but if he is unwilling to tell his readers that “All Taxes” will increase, isn’t that akin to bullshitting them?

I also grant that Obama prattles on and on about how “The Rich” need to be soaked, yet only hints at where he would set the line at who “The Rich” are so as to not scare his more affluent worshippers.

But why would anyone who thinks that this tax plan should be America’s tax plan go through all the difficulty of cutting out an entire section of it, thereby lying to the folks they’re distributing the information to, if they support it that much?

Just wonderin’.

I would like to point out that HopeyChangey’s plan will soak the top percentiles pretty damn well, with their after tax income dropping from 10+ percentage points in the first year.

Secondly, I would also like to point out that even after four years under the Obama Tax plan, after tax income increases less for ALL income levels than under the McCain plan.

And lastly, if you look at only the Obama plan, it does look exactly like Wealth Redistribution would look like if it were graphed, doesn’t it?

I was more right than I had imagined

When I said that the local press was against Mayor Greg Nickels.

From the absolutely not at all conservative/right-wing, Robert L. Jameson Jr’s column in Wednesday’s Seattle PI

When it comes to a city plan to keep concealed weapons from public places, Felix Arena, proud gun owner, has a few thoughts.
First, he says, state law gives him the right to carry concealed firearms with a permit. So what gives Seattle the gumption to trump that?

Second, he says, the plan would be hard to enforce unless the city wants airportlike security in parks and other properties. Wands and metal detectors cost money and are a hassle for crowds.

Third: “It’s just bulls – – -,” Arena summed up during a break from his checker job at a store near Seattle Center, which would be affected by the ban. “Why’s the mayor doing this?”

Here’s an explanation: Hizzoner has gone nuts, power-crazy nuts.

The gun plan Mayor Greg Nickels announced this week is just the latest sign.

I disagree with Jameson’s premise that Nickels is power crazy.

You don’t have to be power crazy to be a gun bigot.

It’s funny because it’s true

It’s also sad because Mr. BigHopeyChangey could be our next President.

Found at Instapundit with the following caption

This photo is of the outside of The Gun Store Las Vegas. The good news is that gun owners aren’t buying into any of the “sensible gun control” nonsense anymore. The bad news is, there is probably very little incentive for Obama to go duck hunting to shore up support from sportsmen, and we’ll miss out on all of the great photos of the Senator in blaze orange.

How anal retentive can the watermelons get?

This anal retentive

It is the Euro 2008 soccer championships and this city is going nuts. Every second car on the street is festooned with little flags; perhaps they shouldn’t be. Engineers are quoted in the Guardian as saying that that the flags, which are usually attached to window frames, cause wind resistance, which alters a car’s aerodynamics and causes it to burn more fuel.

The Austrian car club says “attaching two flags to a car leads to an increased petrol consumption of “up to half a litre a kilometre on motorways and rural stretches”.

The Germans accuse the Austrians of being spoilsports. “As Austria has no chance of victory, it would appear they’re trying to make this into a problem for Germany. The eco party poopers have managed to declare even football a climate-killer … there are no sacred cows any more when it comes to the climate debate.”

I would guess that they could use the greens’ hot air to fill the ball.
