She’s been smokin’ a bit of the peace pipe

If Washington State (Barely) Governor, Christine Gregoire, thought that obscene amount of campaign dollars from the Indian tribes wouldn’t get noticed after the sweetheart deal she worked out for them.

Lucky for her, she only has to fear the incompetent/lazy Washington State Republicans

Leading Republicans in the Legislature called Monday for an investigation into the compact Gov. Chris Gregoire negotiated with Washington’s tribes that allowed for expanded casino gambling but did not include revenue sharing with the state worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

After a report in Friday’s Seattle P-I raised questions about details of the compact and campaign contributions to Democrats and Gregoire from the tribes, Republicans said they have concerns “both with regard to lack of legislative oversight and the appearance of a conflict between the governor’s role as both chief negotiator and campaign benefactor.”

Now, the Democrats who run the legislature with their rock-solid majority don’t HAVE to do a damn thing. They can say that they’re willing to take to Governor’s word that nothing inappropriate went on or is going on, and leave it at that.

Hopefully, with this being an election year, that is exactly what they’ll do.

Here are the questions the Rebpubs want answered

Why, while intervening in negotiations, did the governor turn away hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue sharing when her own Gambling Commission and the Spokane Tribe had already reached agreement on such a plan?

What were the communications between the governor and staff and the Spokane Tribe between 2005 and 2006 that led to the elimination of revenue sharing?

Which tribes, if any, requested that the governor’s office step in to strike revenue sharing from the tribal compact?

Were there promises of campaign support, or other inducements, made by the tribes to any representatives of the governor, including party officials, in exchange for the governor’s action to drop state revenue sharing, while expanding the authorization for slots, higher stakes wagering and off-reservation gaming sites?

What was the state’s estimate of annual revenue that would have come to the state had Gregoire approved the original Gambling Commission compact with the Spokane Tribe, which included revenue sharing?

She lost the Washington State taxpayer a currently known potential of $140 Million and nets her campaign coffers a smooth $650,000.

Quid pro do-si-do?

Oh, and clicking through a list of the the local leftosphere nets a big goose-egg for coverage of this. Same goes for the Seattle Times.

Silence.

This exactly fits my attitude towards the petroleum situation we have going on right now.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Horrible Tragedies

No, not the Darwin Award Nominee who died when the steamroller he had just stolen rolled on top of his trespassing (and quite probably drunken) dumb ass, but the tragedy of the local media letting his parents say something so stupid as this

Ed and Rachel Wydur said it was a moment of bad judgment.

“They were just boys out looking to have a good time. Not causing trouble, not vandalize things,” said Rachel.

There is also the tragedy of the company who owns the construction site and the equipment who will most likely be sued out of business because this trespassing (and quite probably drunken) dumb ass was too stupid to realize they these weren’t his Tonka toys, and his parents will make excuses for his trespassing (and quite possibly drunken) dumb ass even after he is dead because of his stupidity.

As Gimli, son of Gloin, said

And you’ll have my Axe!

Oh, how I wish there were tree sitters near by. My axe sits unused and my chainsaw rests unspun.

As the battle over UC Berkeley’s oak grove near Memorial Stadium continues to unfold, a female tree-sitter has been extracted from the trees after biting an arborist.

According to Dan Mogulof, UC Berkeley’s executive director of public affairs, the woman was on a support line that two arborists were attempting to remove. The woman refused to get off the line after being asked to by the arborists and proceeded to bite one of the arborists in the arm, leading to her extraction from the grove. The arborist received medical attention following the incident.

The extraction of the sitter is the latest development in the day-long stand off between UCPD officers and tree-sit supporters that began when UCPD officers and arborists began cutting down tree-sitters’s supplies around 6:30 a.m. this morning.

The damn things are supposed to come down anyway, 18 months ago. Only the kindness of the local PD has kept folks such as myself who reside nearby from felling the damn things with the trespassing bastards clinging for dear life while gravity ensues.

Good for Her

We have quite a number of these in the Seattle area, which is why the media comes here to talk to them.

It’s an unseasonably cold day in Seattle, and Rebecca is standing in her kitchen, preparing for her regular Sunday afternoon outing. As she gathers her backpack and grocery bags, her dog sniffs around excitedly, anticipating the long walk and treats that await.

In the course of their errands, Rebecca and her dog will visit several stores and coffee shops, a bakery and a chocolate factory.

But instead of walking in the front door, she plans to head out back and go Dumpster diving.

Rebecca, 51, owns a small duplex and has a job running an art program for a health care organization. She’s also an artist in her own right whose accomplishments include a piece that hangs in the Seattle Art Museum.

And she gets 99 percent of her food from the Dumpster.

“It’s so easy to eat for free,” she says. “The only things I buy are butter and milk.”

As I said before, good for her.

And if I see her while I’m making my rounds I will have her cited for trespassing. That’ll raise her “food bill” significantly.

I wouldn’t be such an ass about it, except that a large number of these diggers toss stuff outside the box while they’re searching and don’t bother to put it back when they’re done, making my guy’s jobs harder and customers unhappy. I could tell stories all day long about divers looking for clothes and how we armored all the boxes in the shopping district because of the increasing “craftiness” of the divers looking for name brands.

Imagine That

67% Support Offshore Drilling – 64% Expect it will lower prices

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey—conducted before McCain announced his intentions on the issue–finds that 67% of voters believe that drilling should be allowed off the coasts of California, Florida and other states. Only 18% disagree and 15% are undecided. Conservative and moderate voters strongly support this approach, while liberals are more evenly divided (46% of liberals favor drilling, 37% oppose).Sixty-four percent (64%) of voters believe it is at least somewhat likely that gas prices will go down if offshore oil drilling is allowed, although 27% don’t believe it. Seventy-eight percent (78%) of conservatives say offshore drilling is at least somewhat likely to drive prices down. That view is shared by 57% of moderates and 50% of liberal voters.

And

Crist backs offshore drilling

Florida’s once-solid bipartisan opposition to drilling in the Gulf of Mexico shattered Tuesday when Gov. Charlie Crist reversed course and said the state may have to allow drilling to help lower gasoline prices.

Crist was among the Republicans expressing support for Sen. John McCain’s call for lifting the federal moratorium along the Outer Continental Shelf and giving states a share of petroleum revenues as an incentive for them to allow oil and gas drilling off their coasts.

And

President Bush plans to make a renewed push Wednesday to get Congress to end a long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, echoing a call by GOP presidential candidate John McCain.

Congressional Democrats have opposed lifting the prohibitions on energy development on nearly all federal Outer Continental Shelf waters for more than a quarter-century, including waters along both the East and West coasts.

With oil prices soaring and motorists paying $4 a gallon for gasoline, political pressures have been growing for more domestic oil and gas production.

And now this

Saudi King: We will pump more oil

Next month, the Saudis will be pumping an extra half-a-million barrels of oil a day compared to last month, bringing total Saudi production to 9.7 million barrels a day, their highest ever level.

That last link mentions every single factor that would lead to a raise in oil output, and even the Saud-eens demanding that the EU countries lower their taxes on fuel, but mysteriously, nothing about the US political world gearing up for a showdown of the Watermelons versus the Realists.

The Chicago Way

If they bring a box van, you bring an articulated bus

Gas tax dollars from motorists around the country will be used to help Chicago, Illinois implement an innovative system to raise the cost of parking in the city. Under a $153 million federal grant approved in April, Mayor Richard M. Daley (D) will remove lanes from general purpose use on the city’s busiest streets and devote them exclusively to a new rapid transit service using sixty-foot long articulated buses. The program also means more red lights for motorists as the double-sized buses will have the ability to change traffic lights.

Seattle has been trying to do this in their downtown for a couple years now. I guess they never thought that someone in the federal government would give them money to implement it.

I can hear the city council screaming “Next!” all the way in Tacoma.

Say it with me now!

We’re number two! We’re number two!

China clearly overtakes US as leading emitter of climate warming gases

China has now clearly overtaken the United States as the world’s leading emitter of climate-warming gases, a new study has found. The increasing emissions from China – up 8 percent in the past year – accounted for two-thirds of the growth in global greenhouse gas emissions in 2007, the study found.

The report, released Friday by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency, is an annual study. Last year, for the first time, the researchers found that China had edged ahead of the United States as the world’s leading emitter.

I’m so happy I could almost weep for joy!

This does mean that the eco-socialists will be heading off to China straight away, right? In previous discussion with them the Gaiahadists say that they’re trying to change American policy because we pollute the most, so they’llbe moving on now, right?

No? But, why?

Some folks should just simply not be asked questions on certain issues. Like this guy

McCain’s weakness is that he’s always been for the use of force, force and more force. In my experience, the only time to use force is as a last resort.

Wesley Clark – Former US Army General and Democrat candidate, speaking with the Huffington Post

You know, as the man who, while Divisional Commander of the 1st Cav at Fort Hood, Texas, violated posse comitatus by signing the release of military vehicles and personnel to former US Attorney General, Janet Reno, and her goons in the FBI and ATF to use in the storming of the Waco compound, Clark isn’t really one to talk about having reasonable judgment enough to use or not to use force.

This is not a defense of McCain, just a critique of Clark and his recently found demagoguery on the national political stage.

I do love me a good lawsuit

Especially when eco-pirates are subpoenaed

Estate owner sue Greenpeace for prediction

MADRID – A group of real estate developers and property owners in La Manga del Mar Menor – a spit of sandy, low-lying coastal land and Murcia’s premier beach resort – are threatening to take Greenpeace to court over its graphic predictions of what global warming may do to the area, which they say have caused house prices to plummet.

The lawsuit, which the plaintiffs plan to present unless Greenpeace agrees to an out of court settlement of almost EUR 30 million in damages, comes more than six months after La Manga featured prominently in a photo book published by the environmental organisation that was intended to shock Spain into action on climate change.

The eco-terrorists say that they’re simply following the UN IPCC report. There are 30,000+ scientists who say that that report is rubbish.

Please, Greenpeace, I beg of you. Do not settle out of court.
