Buh-Bye, Bri

So long. Hope you learned something.

In the end, the 250 letters of support, an impassioned plea by her mother and Briana Waters’ own tears did not spare her from prison for her role in the 2001 arson of the University of Washington’s Center for Urban Horticulture.

The 32-year-old Californian was sentenced Thursday to six years in federal prison and ordered to pay $6 million in restitution by U.S. District Court Judge Franklin Burgess, who also declined her lawyer’s request that Waters be released on her own recognizance pending appeal.

The six years is kind of wuss, but I do like the $6 Million in restitution.

Any takers on a bet that her little ALF/ELF friends forget that her family is going to be in debt for the rest of their lives and don’t give them a dime?

Like these little ungrateful pricks

An unoccupied van of the University of California at Los Angeles was torched last week, and the Animal Liberation Front has claimed responsibility, blaming researchers for necessitating the attach. Groups opposed to any animal research have made UCLA a target, and many researchers have experienced vandalism, picketing and harassment on and off campus. Gene Block, UCLA’s chancellor, issued a statement in which he said: “I am deeply disturbed that, yet again, extremists have resorted to acts of violence in an attempt to achieve their goal to end all laboratory research involving animals. In this most recent apparent act of terror against UCLA, the extremists have crossed yet another threshold and directed violence at individuals and property not associated with animal research.

Oooh, he issued a statement. That’ll make ’em quake, Geen-o. they won’t destroy taxpayer owned property after that tongue lashing.

Doesn’t he get that these people have been brainwashed to believe that the destruction of vehicles and structures isn’t “violence”?

More than likely, brainwashed by members of his own staff.

Whiners

I don’t know ho wit is where you’re all at, but locally, my Premium grade gas costs an extra $0.20 per gallon more than regular.

I have a 19 gallon tank on Buddy, so paying that extra $3.80 when I’m already paying more than $50 a week isn’t killing me.

Apparently, some folks are either stretched too tight or, more likely, they haven’t figured this out yet

Demand for high-octane fuel is at its lowest in nearly a quarter of a century and is now primarily consumed by a core group of luxury-vehicle owners — and even some of them are putting lower-grade fuel into their tanks to save money. In 1997, high-octane garnered 16 percent of the nationwide fuel market share, according to figures from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Last month, premium had only 8 percent of the market. Last year, premium gasoline consumption fell to about 35.6 million gallons of gas per day, the lowest in 24 years, the agency said.

“We’re down to the core, die-hard audience that believes they need 93,” said Tom Kloza, publisher of the Oil Price Information Service, a New Jersey firm that provides petroleum pricing and news information.

I don’t “need” high-octane gas, but I like it. I don’t get knocks going up western Washington’s many hills, and from what testing I’ve been able to do over the years, I get better mileage with it.

Not enough return on my investment

But it sure sounds like fun

The 401-Keg plan

1. If you had purchased $1000.00 of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

2. With Enron, you would have had $16.50 left of the original $1000.00.

3. With WorldCom, you would have had less than $5.00 left.

4. If you had purchased $1000.00 of Delta Air Lines stock you would have $49.00 left.

5. But, if you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the aluminum recycling, you would have $214.00.

So, based on the above, the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

And because I had a free moment, I did the math with the current market price of aluminum, and the actual return would be closer to $175.

So, you decide: Is $1000 of Keystone Light three times as good as Delta Airlines?

RNS Quote of the Day, 06/20/08

More Larry:

Five years ago, when I told people that my eventual goal was to build a house out in the middle of nowhere that was totally off the grid, powered by solar panels, a wind turbine, with my own well and gravity fed water tower, I was a psycho right-wing militia type. Now, apparently I’m “environmentally aware” and “Green.” Oh, barf. Anybody who tells me that, I then point out that my off-the-grid house is also going to have a giant fence around it, topped in razor-wire, with solar-powered spotlights for my .50 BMG sniper rifle. Stuff it, hippie. Us government-hating survivalists were into that stuff way before you showed up to the party in your Prius.

The Soundboard: Nibble for a Giggle Edition

Being this is a week of weirdness, I became forgetful enough to not remember to dial up David on the RNS encrypted voodoo wave device last night to discover what tracks he had selected for today. But that is OK, I have a story to tell.

It is either surprise or jealousy that causes my friends to do this: Having been married to the same person for seven years and with her for over twelve, they think it is funny to put certain ex’s back in touch with me.

By “certain”, I mean the complete psychos: The type who’ll knife the tires on your car.

Now, the last time this happened, it spawned its own Soundboard post as well, though I’m pretty sure that one is in the offline archives because I can’t find it. That gentleman got some revenge served up ice fuckin’ cold and raw as a Pike Place Market tossed salmon in his love life shortly thereafter. Quite possibly due to my mentioning of a prior bad act his wife didn’t fully appreciate at the time. When you can make a guy of Japanese heritage go whiter than Edgar Winter in his own living room with a sentence, you know you have avenged yourself.

Our latest contestant learned from his predecessor’s mistake and only forwarded an email to see if I’d bite. I’m biting, but only for a laugh. Hence the title of this post.

It seems that a certain not so special someone has seen the light of the Obamessiah and is sending messages to all her old friends, and apparently not so friendlies as well, to try and get support for Mr. BigHopeyChangey.

I would not call this the best marketing strategy in existence, but when you’re as crazy as she is, I suppose it sounds reasonable.

Lita was definitely “the kind you don’t bring home to mother” and I knew that the night I met her. I didn’t know it would cost me a windshield and half a set of Yokohamas in under three months.

I also didn’t know about how hard I’d laugh at her nearly fourteen years later.

Even though she was never even a “maybe” this track from the Post album is for her

Possibly Maybe – Bjork

The appropriate to the subject lyric is as follows:

Who knows what’s going to happen,
Lottery or car crash,
Or you’ll join a cult.

And, for your two-fer this week, simply because the bass line sounds so, so very nice in my truck

Heirloom – Bjork

From the Vespertine album

Enjoy

The latest whine

You can tell that the race for Washington’s Governor is heating up. The leftosphere has whined themselves up to a pitch that can only be heard by dogs.

The latest piece of outrage (click for bigger)
rossiseattle.jpg
The urban “progressives” haven’t the slightest clue as to just how pissed off a large number of folks on the eastern, and more rural, side of Washington are after the 2004 debacle.

That sign is privately made. Not a handout from the campaign itself. Yet, by the screech of this post, I’m sure that they’ve been hammering the Rossi phone lines trying to get them to order it removed.

Preach it! Truth to Power!

And all that sort of rubbish.

For some reason, Obama has lately felt the need to talk about September 11th. Never mind the Democrat’s lines about how it shouldn’t be used to talk about terrorists or terrorism on the campaign trail, that is for Republicans only. Obama is the “The One” and he gets a free pass.

And I for one am fully behind him doing so.

Why?

Because it brings the Troofers out of the Democratic woodwork.

Oliver Willis (Occupation: Toole) noted Obama’s inclusion of September 11th rhetoric in his speeches yesterday.

Sure enough, a Troofer posting as “Mike” arrives, right on time.

Please, Obama, I beg of you, speak all you want about September 11th. I will be laughing every time I see a supporter of yours wearing an “inside job” shirt at your rallys. I’m not talking about outside, on the sidewalk. I’m talking in the crowd, right behind you. Those Ronulans really like them some Obama.

The other RNS Quote of the Day

So I’m reading through the HuffPo so that you all don’t have to, and I find this moron, David Johnson, and his post about it is all a “Big Media Conspiracy” that is convincing people that drilling for more oil will lower gas prices.

Some dumbass brings up the Windfall Profits Tax, or as the folks at HuffPo have decided it should be called “The Cartel Profits Tax” (because the oil companies are a cartel, get it!).

Someone else comes along and preaches the truth about how the oil companies will just be adding the new tax onto the price per gallon.

Then Dave Johnson feels the need to jump into the comments section and show just how ignorant he is with this comment, which is the other RNS Quote of the Day:

Taxes are on profits, which are computed after sales and costs are added up. So companies CAN’T pass on taxes to the consumers. This is a myth. Companies charge the maximum they CAN charge for their product – no more and no less. If they were charging less they would be negligent. And since taxes are computed long after the sale they can’t be added anyway.

Dave Johnson

Yes, reading that will cause you to lose 10 IQ points.

I just couldn’t help it. I signed up for a login at the HuffPo and commented.

Granted, the comment didn’t last for much more than an hour, but I had to get this off my chest

Dave Johnson, you are an idiot.

It is called “Projected Costs”. As soon as the tax rate is legislated, it is calculated into the per gallon cost and then automatically tacked to the price to the retailer, who has to add it to the price at the pump or lose money.

This is a nice little conspiracy theory you”ve got going on here. Sadly for you, that is all it is: A theory.

Americans are tired of paying $4+ at the pump and they have listened and watched for 15 years as Democrat policies have kept our oil underground. They want those policies changed. They are not stupid. They can see for themselves that those policies do not work and they don’t need some pie in the sky “media campaign” to tell them this.

It doesn”t take much effort to see how you all have been wrong just a little bit at this point in the discussion. Which is why the wailing and gnashing of teeth, such as this post of yours, is at a high pitch whine now.

I”ve read in the comments here and on other posts that the Saudis won”t care if we turn our spigots, you all might want to check out The Independent from earlier this week: 250K extra barrels a day, starting immediately.

Give up on your fantasy of getting America to get off oil cold turkey. We need to be weaned slowly. Our homes and cars are our favorite things.

Just trying to bring joy to the world.

RNS Quote of the Day, 06/19/08

Larry brings it:

Today I heard a soundbyte where Obama was touring a hospital, and talked about how seeing blood made his queasy. Yes, because that’s the kind of testicular fortitude we need in a leader! McCain got TORTURED for five straight years by the Vietcong. I’m willing to bet that he doesn’t get “queasy” at the sight of blood, especially when he’s sticking his own arm bones back into his flesh, making bamboo splints, and tying them up with filthy rags.
