RNS Quote of the Day: 06/16/08

I’ve gotten a number of responses from my call out last week for folks who could make to a “Town Hall Media Circus” that might be called up by gun bigot Mayor of Seattle, Greg Nickels.

One of the respondents, Marina, sent an email that contained our QotD

Sadly I have kept putting off getting my CCW here in King County (moved here this year) but I am going first thing tomorrow morning, and making sure Nickels knows that he inspired me to do it.

Marina

As is evidenced here, bigotry often creates the opposite reaction to what the bigot wanted. Congrats, Marina.

Unfortunately, it also makes other bigots react badly.

Council bans firearms in parks

Montesano is joining the ranks of cities banning firearms from their parks. The City Council has adopted a new parks ordinance describing activities prohibited in city parks. Among them is a ban on all firearms.

The council approved the new law by a split 4-3 vote on Tuesday. Earlier this week, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels announced a new policy banning firearms on all city property, including parks. Critics of Seattle’s policy said the move violates state law and the rights of legally authorized gun owners. Washington state law prohibits local governments from enacting gun laws that are stricter than state codes but does allow cities to ban guns from city-owned stadiums, convention centers and the workplace, where the city is the employer.

“You guys are working really hard to take away my right to carry a gun,” said Councilman Albert Collins. He said the city shouldn’t take away the constitutional rights of people who have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. “If we have a permit to carry it, we should be OK.”

Thank you, Councilman Collins.

While the city’s website lists no contact info for the City Council, the Mayor of Montesano, Ron Schillinger, can be contacted by phone (360) 249-3021 Ext#102 or by email

Also, I would like to add that I seem to have spoken too soon about the local media not supporting Nickels

Gun Free – Proud of it

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels’s executive order banning guns from Seattle Center, parks, community centers and city-run buildings is safe and sane public policy.
The next Folklife or Bumbershoot festival should be gun-free. Our citizens should not have to fear that an individual with mental problems will walk in, no questions asked, get into a fight and injure innocent people with a loaded gun.

Oh well. I’ve should have known better.

However, I do wonder what they’d say if Nickels passed an EO stating that the Times’ couldn’t be sold or read on city property. Methinks their opinion would be different.

The thing that absolutely amazes me about this whole thing is how all of the “power to the people” and “speak truth to power” types seem to love living in the mayor’s little undemocratic fiefdom. Preemption issues aside, I’ve read the City Charter, and it sure looks like it vests the legislative power in the council. This is an executive power grab of the highest order and nobody seems to give a rip but those of us on the right that actually believe in the rule of law.

Like Capt Attila said: isn’t the government supposed to work for the people? Why isn’t something that curtails basic freedoms put to a referendum or plebescite, or a ballot initiative?

The mayor is not a god. Can you somehow force him to consult the citizenry?
