I don’t know that congratulations are quite in order, but good on ya, North Dakota!
North Dakota may end 2008 with the lowest number of murders in at least 30 years, Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says.
Stenehjem said North Dakota has averaged about 11 homicides annually for the past several years, after a high of 22 in 1993. He said 16 homicides were reported last year, but only two so far this year.
Homicide and other violent crime statistics have been kept since 1978, he said.
“It’s always good when we’re down, but these numbers can be roller coasters,” Stenehjem said. “Still, two is way better than the 16 we had last year.”
My math skills suck, but I’m seeing a nearly 88% decrease in ND’s homicide stats. Anyone with better skills, feel free to correct me.

Now keep in mind that North Dakota is one of the top gun-owning states in the nation. According to this Washington Post poll, North Dakota ranks 5th in the nation in gun ownership rates with over 50% of residents having a gun in their household. That’s a higher gun ownership percentage than Texas. By far. And North Dakota has some of the most lax gun control laws in the nation as well.
According to the logic used by the gun control nuts, North Dakota should be ripe with murder and armed robbery. But we’re not.

Why won’t they count him as a second occupant so I can get in the carpool lane?
A year ago, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced it had demonstrated that a new way to pay for roads — via a mileage tax and satellite technology — could work.
Now Gov. Ted Kulongoski says he’d like the legislature to take the next step.
As part of a transportation-related bill he has filed for the 2009 legislative session, the governor says he plans to recommend “a path to transition away from the gas tax as the central funding source for transportation.â€
What that means is explained on the governor’s website:
“As Oregonians drive less and demand more fuel-efficient vehicles, it is increasingly important that the state find a new way, other than the gas tax, to finance our transportation system.â€
According to the policies he has outlined online, Kulongoski proposes to continue the work of the special task force that came up with and tested the idea of a mileage tax to replace the gas tax.
I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there.
Getting rid of the gas tax!?! Never in a hundred years, especially in bluest of blue Oregon.
I’m thinking I have to look into finding a way for Oregonians to register their vehicles at my place for 75% off the dotgov’s price.

The snow up here in the Seattle/Tacoma area is now pretty much gone. It is amazing how fast a foot of snow goes away when the temps get back into to the 40s. I’m still trying to figure out if I’m sad to see it go. Because like an Italian sports car, it is rather nice to look at, but after a while becomes annoying to maintain.

This is the farm across Highway 1 from the beach pictured below. Every inch of that property has one hell of a view. No direct access from Highway 1 that I could see, either, so it’s much more isolated than it appears.
Heh. Anchor some floating steel plates offshore and you have your windy 1000-yard range, with bobbing targets, no less. Although shooting across a highway is a crime in Cali, so you’d have to walk to the beach every time you wanted to do some shooting.
A self-sufficient retreat with fantastic fields of fire, mild climate, and shooting, surfing, boating and fishing right off your back yard. What’s not to like?
The blue effect is unintentional; my little vest-pocket camera just doesn’t have the shutter speed to catch the details of such fast-moving big waves.
