The Soundboard: Finally Christmas Edition

I’ve been waylaid from remembering to post these by my own mind. But today is a good day to set aside the invective and just calm out for a bit.

I apologize for the delay, and as our Christmas present to you, would like to offer this batch of tunage.

A double-double shot for your holiday listening today, and then I will have at least a triple shot up tomorrow.

We’ll start out with my favorite

Cold & Raw/Greensleeves Jig – Laura MacKenzie

And because this one has a hell of a sharp hook

Christmas Carousing/Ale is Dear/New Christmas – Bonnie Rideout w/Eric Rigler

Try to keep your toes from tapping along with this one (without using nails)

Cold Winter’s Day/Christmas Eve – Kevin Burke & Michael o’Domhnaill

And, for me anyway, it wouldn’t be Christmas without this near as makes no difference a capella

Airdi Cuan – Maighread & Trianna Ni Dhomhnaill

Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas!

RNS Quote of the Day: 12/23/08

Today, I would like to introduce you to your next Secretary of Energy

Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.

Mr. Steven Chu – Director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California and Obama’s nominee for Energy Secretary

Hopefully, the slow economy will lay these plans off to the side for a while.

Yawn

We already knew this was her attitude, but it is nice for her to lay it out so blatantly. Now she can’t ever claim to be unbiased.

Laissez-Faire Capitalism Should Be As Dead As Soviet Communism – Arianna Huffington

The collapse of Communism as a political system sounded the death knell for Marxism as an ideology. But while laissez-faire capitalism has been a monumental failure in practice, and soundly defeated at the polls, the ideology is still alive and kicking.

The only place you can find an American Marxist these days is teaching a college linguistic theory class. But you can find all manner of free market fundamentalists still on the Senate floor or in Governor’s mansions or showing up on TV trying to peddle the deregulation snake oil.

…..

If a politician announced he was running on a platform of “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need” he would be laughed off the stage. That is also the correct response to anyone who continues to make the case that markets do best when left alone.

It’s time to drive the final nail into the coffin of laissez-faire capitalism by treating it like the discredited ideology it inarguably is.

Seeing as how it hasn’t been in practice in America for over 150 years, I’m not sure just how it was ever “discredited”.

But hey, where you’re rich and stupid but have a following, you have to make facts up sometimes.

Impersonatiions

Don’t go telling these kids to get off your lawn

As a prank, students from local high schools have been taking advantage of the county’s Speed Camera Program in order to exact revenge on people who they believe have wronged them in the past, including other students and even teachers.

Students from Richard Montgomery High School dubbed the prank the Speed Camera “Pimping” game, according to a parent of a student enrolled at one of the high schools.

Originating from Wootton High School, the parent said, students duplicate the license plates by printing plate numbers on glossy photo paper, using fonts from certain websites that “mimic” those on Maryland license plates. They tape the duplicate plate over the existing plate on the back of their car and purposefully speed through a speed camera, the parent said. The victim then receives a citation in the mail days later.

Students are even obtaining vehicles from their friends that are similar or identical to the make and model of the car owned by the targeted victim, according to the parent.

“This game is very disturbing,” the parent said. “Especially since unsuspecting parents will also be victimized through receipt of unwarranted photo speed tickets.

The parent said that “our civil rights are exploited,” and the entire premise behind the Speed Camera Program is called into question as a result of the growing this fad among students.

Want to get rid of speed cameras?

Find your local politician of disdain and try this trick.

Having to fight 40 red-light or speed camera tickets a week tends to put a damper on the urge to put up cameras.

My wife would like that

Yes, she would.

White Christmas?

Maybe. The weatherguessers are currently telling us that there’ll be one more snowing on Tuesday and then warmer temps and rain on Wednesday & Thursday.

But they were so far off with their roarings of high winds that all I can say is “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

About an hour after I hit the “publish” button on this post yesterday (and then went to sleep in preparation for going to work), it started snowing again. It didn’t stop snowing until about 0300 last night.

Check out the buildup on those coolers!

Ellie isn’t a fan, but she still walks the perimeter.

The deck is holding up pretty well

The stuff comes down faster than I can shovel & sweep it off.

The Wife cam home from work just after the snow started falling in the afternoon. When I woke up, she informed me that I wasn’t going to be allowed to go to work unless my boss insisted (which she didn’t).

The Wife then said she needed to go to the store.

So I fired up and cleared off Buddy the Jeep and took her to get whatever it was that she “needed”.

While she was inside, Buddy and I were committed belligerent amounts of powerslides in the back 40 of the parking lot.

Came home, had some chili and beers, took a nap and woke up and blogged.

As I said yesterday, life does move just a little bit slower during days like these (except when you’re sliding sideways).

What.The.Hell?

Seriously. Just WTF were these assholes thinking?

It was a little before 8 at night when the breaker went out at Emily Milburn’s home in Galveston. She was busy preparing her children for school the next day, so she asked her 12-year-old daughter, Dymond, to pop outside and turn the switch back on.

As Dymond headed toward the breaker, a blue van drove up and three men jumped out rushing toward her. One of them grabbed her saying, “You’re a prostitute. You’re coming with me.”

Dymond grabbed onto a tree and started screaming, “Daddy, Daddy, Daddy.” One of the men covered her mouth. Two of the men beat her about the face and throat.

As it turned out, the three men were plain-clothed Galveston police officers who had been called to the area regarding three white prostitutes soliciting a white man and a black drug dealer.

All this is according to a lawsuit filed in Galveston federal court by Milburn against the officers. The lawsuit alleges that the officers thought Dymond, an African-American, was a hooker due to the “tight shorts” she was wearing, despite not fitting the racial description of any of the female suspects. The police went to the wrong house, two blocks away from the area of the reported illegal activity, Milburn’s attorney, Anthony Griffin, tells Hair Balls.

After the incident, Dymond was hospitalized and suffered black eyes as well as throat and ear drum injuries.

There is no excuse for this. None whatsoever. Firings and jail time all the way around.

More Proof

That belief in Global Warming is hazardous to the welfare of the citizenry

No power outages were reported as of 5 p.m., but Nickels said seven City Light crews were on standby.

The city has 27 trucks designated for snow and ice removal, and all are expected to be working by 6 p.m.

Two of those trucks would be designated to the West Seattle Bridge; another two were assigned to the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Nickels said.

Garbage pickup would not happen “until we have the ability to safely send those trucks out,” Nickels said, adding back loads also would be picked up.

Most side streets will not be covered by city plows.

“We just do not have the capacity to do that,” Nickels said.

For those that have never visited Seattle, the City Fathers basically said “Let’s find the most steep hillside in the region and start building a town there.”
Unless you’re on the narrow flood plains that are the Sodo area or the Rainier Valley, you are on a hill. I had an aunt who lived in West Seattle whom my father called a “cliff dweller” because her street was so steep.

I’m guessing that with Nickels being the watermelon bastard that he is, he believed that he would would never need a snowplow again, because of Global Warming.

Nickels claims that the city doesn’t have “the capacity” (aka: The Money) to make the streets safe for the citizenry (one of the specific requirements laid out in the city charter), but he is willing to spend millions playing chicken with the state constitution to keep law-abiding firearms carriers, who have had the FBI and the Washington State Patrol check their life history for 30 days, off city property.

If I wasn’t so tired of hearing the word “Impeach!” from the local left, I’d start a bandwagon to get Nickels removed.

Don’t get out of the car

In Washington, we are required to render assistance under a Good Samaratin law. We also have a law that gives liability immunity to those who do render assistance (RCW 4.24.300).

While I don’t like beginning required by the state to do anything, I’m wondering how it could be worse than this

Being a good Samaritan in California just got a little riskier.

The California Supreme Court ruled Thursday that a young woman who pulled a co-worker from a crashed vehicle isn’t immune from civil liability because the care she rendered wasn’t medical.

The divided high court appeared to signal that rescue efforts are the responsibility of trained professionals. It was also thought to be the first ruling by the court that someone who intervened in an accident in good faith could be sued.

Lisa Torti of Northridge allegedly worsened the injuries suffered by Alexandra Van Horn by yanking her “like a rag doll” from the wrecked car on Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

Torti now faces possible liability for injuries suffered by Van Horn, a fellow department store cosmetician who was rendered a paraplegic in the accident that ended a night of Halloween revelry in 2004.

Now, we don’t know if the car was on fire or if Ms. Torti was requesting help, but this is just plain stupid (aka: Par for the course in California).
