Sling, but No Blade
Last month I took heed of St. Col. Cooper’s dictum that a rifle without a sling is not a rifle, or something to that effect, and managed to figure out how to make a reasonable facsimile of a two-point CW sling on my Garands. (I really like the CW Sling/Ching Sling concept;I could have done a 3-point Ching sling variant, but the particular sling that came with the rifle wasn’t long enough.) Getting the length right to match my arms was frustrating, but I eventually made it work. I can now mount my rifles and in superfast notime I’m slung tight.
I’ve got plenty of en bloc clips. I plan to order the Holbrook Thumbsaver shortly. Next I suppose I need to find a reasonably priced pair of bayonets.
They’ll probably try to make me undo it all at my first Appleseed, but we’ll see. There’s an Appleseed shoot in Sacramento next weekend, and I probably can’t make it, but we’ll see about that too.Of course I don’t have any .30-06 Garand ammo yet….
***BONUS*** CMP just announced they’ll be receiving enough .30-06 HXP to satisfy customer demand for “years,” in February. With their limit of 10 cases a year (almost 2k rounds) per person, that works for me.

Easiest and Tastiest Dessert Evah
In conjunction with the two-hour turkey, below, we did the best Thanksgiving dessert in our family’s history. That’s heresy, given my grandmother’s and mother’s pie-making abilities, but I hate pumpkin pie and love chocolate, so there you go.
Seriously, this was my first baking experience and it was simplicity itself. And you can’t stop eating it, it’s sooo good.

Gone Underground?
Yes, I think we’ll soon see that it has.
Professor Joseph Olson has confirmed that the Ohio State University’s Second Amendment Research Center has apparently expired. In the words of Monty Python, it is an ex-Center. Its URL [http://www.secondamendmentcenter.org] is out of service and the OSU operator had no information. The Center’s director, historian Saul Cornell, this year moved on to a chair at Fordham University, and his vita shows the dates of the SARC to be 2002–2008.
This “scholarly†center was one of the initiatives funded by the Joyce Foundation to support writings that opposed the academic consensus that had previously arisen that the original meaning of the Second Amendment protected an individual right.
You don’t just go and misplace a program such as this. So, if you were the Joyce Foundation, where would you put your academic disinformation/propaganda machine?
So many choices.

Pessimism is the reality.
I hope I am wrong, but I doubt anything much will come out of this Climategate kerfuffle in the longer term. The scientists involved in the leak will take their professional cyanide capsules, and there will be a bit of public head-hanging and self reflection from the rest of the major players, after which the “science” behind AGW will be declared “pure” again. Aided and abetted by the majority of the world’s political leaders, who have invested so much in the AGW industry that it is now surely Too Big To Fail. So bail it out and back to business, already.
The reality is that while the anti-AGW side of the argument are stacking up the facts, we have neither the political or media backing to disperse them to the general populace. Hence, the vast majority of current and future Cultists will not get to know the facts.
One of the big leftosphere blogs finally posted on the topic of the CRU emails on Wednesday. There was no link to the emails, but there were links to other corrupted pro-AGW “studies”. I read nearly a dozen comments to that post which started out as “I haven’t read the emails, but I’m sure there is nothing in them that proves they did anything wrong.”
Heads in the sand, indeed.
Fastest AND Juiciest Turkey in Years
Holy crap, this recipe worked! We had a 22-lb. turkey and it was one of the sweetest and juiciest I’ve ever eaten.
It’s the Safeway 2-hour turkey. In a nutshell: high heat for 2 hours, and let it rest 30-45 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 (10 lb) whole turkey (if frozen, fully thawed)
- 1-2Â tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- pepper and salt
Directions
- Remove and discard truss that holds turkey legs together. Pull or trim off and discard any excess fat in neck or body cavity. Remove giblets and neck.
- Rinse turkey inside and out with warm water. Pat dry with paper towels.
- Place the adjustable V-shaped rack in a 13 x 16 x 3-inch roasting pan (set rack sides so the bird is a minimum of 2 inches from pan bottom).
- Rub turkey skin generously all over with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Set bird breast-side-up on rack. Pull wings away from body, then firmly twist them to push the wing tips under the bird.
- Using aluminum foil, form caps over the tips of the end of each drumstick. If any parts of the turkey extend beyond pan rim, fashion a foil collar underneath to make sure drippings flow back into pan. Do not tie legs together, add stuffing, or close body cavity.
- Insert an oven-safe meat thermometer near the center of the breast through thickest part until the tip touches bone, which is most accurate spot to check doneness
- Verify oven temperature and set pan on the lowest rack in a 475° oven. Roast according to time chart at right, checking as directed during cooking, until thermometer reaches 160°. Halfway through roasting time, rotate pan in oven to assure even cooking and browning (Tip C). If areas on turkey breast start to get browner than you like, lay a piece of foil over the dark areas.
- Remove pan from oven, set in a warm spot, and loosely cover pan with foil to keep it warm. Rearrange oven racks to accommodate potatoes and dressing. Decrease oven temperature to 400º. Let turkey rest 30 to 60 minutes. The resting period will allow the internal temperature to reach 165°, the USDA safe cooking temperature for poultry.
- Drain juices from body cavity (often plentiful in unstuffed birds) into roasting pan. Transfer turkey to a platter or rimmed cutting board. Set aside juices for gravy.
- Cut off turkey legs at thigh joint . If joint is red or pink, return legs to the oven for 3 to 5 minutes (at 300° to 475°) or heat in a microwave oven for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Carve the rest of the turkey. Carving juices may be clear to pink or rosy; both are fine. Save juices to pour into gravy if desired.
- Time Saving Tip. If you have a frozen turkey, place it in the refrigerator to thaw 4-6 days before Thanksgiving. Take it out an hour before cooking to bring it to room temperature.
- Helpful Hints.If there is any smoke, check pan and wings for drips into oven; adjust foil under wings, or slide roasting pan onto a larger shallow rimmed pan. Wipe drips from oven bottom.

Bigotry in Government
Yesterday, Kevin Baker pointed to a CSM article pointing out five things that are very wrong with the Senate health care insurance reform bill.
They missed a big one.
Is the Senate health plan anti-gun?
The Senate’s 2,074-page health care bill doesn’t mention guns, but some gun owners are worried certain provisions could eventually be used to discourage or even restrict gun ownership as part of a government effort to influence behavior as it broadens its control over the health care system.
The day before the Senate passed the $848 billion health bill on a party-line vote, the Virginia-based Gun Owners of America sent out a mass alert to its 300,000 members, warning them that the legislation “will most likely dump your gun-related health data into a government database. … This includes any firearms-related information your doctor has gleaned or any determination of post traumatic stress disorder or something similar, that can preclude you from owning firearms.”
Some folks have written this off as just more of the GOA jumping up and down on the fringe.
Dave Kopel doesn’t seem to think so
“There is a broader issue here,” said Dave Kopel, research director of the Independence Institute of Colorado, a libertarian think tank. “The more you socialize costs, the more you empower the argument that the government has the authority to control private behavior.”
Kopel pointed to the Japanese health care system, where employee waistlines are measured and those who are overweight are put into special weight loss programs, as an example of where the U.S. health care system could be headed.
And gun control could become part of it, Kopel said.
“If [the Department of Health and Human Services] can write regulations for lower premiums for healthy habits in general,” Kopel said. “Then I don’t see anything in the bill that stops HHS from saying people get higher premiums for unhealthy habits such as owning a gun or a handgun.”

WWII vets, kin up in arms over display of Soviet dictator Stalin’s bust at National D-Day Memorial
The National D-Day Memorial has sparked outrage by adding to its lineup of Allied leaders a bust of the Soviet dictator who helped start World War II and the Cold War.
Not only did Joseph Stalin kill more people than Adolf Hitler in his murderous reign, he didn’t send a single Russian soldier to storm the beaches at Normandy in 1944.
I hope that on June 6th, 2010, some very pissed off, yet enterprising, WWII vet defaces the bust.
I would suggest possibly pouring red paint over it, hitting it with a 5lb sledge, or smearing the face with a sandwich baggy of dog feces. Something. Anything.
