This Lawsuit’s Down the Road

But the planning for it’s going on now. From a Calguns board member:

I do think we’re optimistic the NFA length requirements aren’t going to stand up to strict scrutiny. But, we need to get strict scrutiny, first.

Small steps, small steps….

Eurocentric

Excuse me for a moment whilst I gaze across the pond…

For some odd reason, the locals are getting restless about the solidity of their currency. At Samizdata, I found a link to this Daily Mail piece where the writer warns his fellow Britons about accepting currency printed by certain nations.

In the face of this gross irresponsibility, the people of Europe have no choice but to take matters into their own hands and take the right precautions.

Here are two essential pieces of advice. Anyone planning to travel to Eurozone countries during the summer should consider what has previously been unthinkable  -  the fate of euro notes and coins if the single currency falls apart.

I believe it is inevitable that Greece and Portugal will pull out of the euro at some stage, and when that happens there will be little or no warning.

In these extreme circumstances, the euros issued by these two countries might be converted back to drachmas and escudos  -  leaving the value of them in jeopardy.

Of course, under European Central Bank rules the value of this money ought to be fully protected, but who knows what will happen if there was a major crisis.

Certainly, on my travels, I’m going to be wary of accepting euro notes with serial numbers that are prefixed with the letters Y (coming from Greece) or M (from Portugal).

I shall also strongly steer clear of notes with the serial numbers starting G (Cyprus), S (Italy), V ( Spain), T ( Ireland) and F (Malta).

This might sound as if I’m being ridiculously alarmist, but you cannot be too careful.

However, other euro notes should be reasonably safe.

These include those marked Z (Belgium), U (France), l (Finland) and H (Slovenia-As for those with serial numbers beginning with X ( Germany), P (the Netherlands)and N (Austria), they can all be used with total confidence.

I’m sorry, but if one falls, they all tumble rather quickly. But whichever opinion you take, US travelers should take note of this advice as well.

Did you ever want to own an island? In the Med?

In the wisest move indebted governments can do with their surplus real estate, Greece has got your hookup.

There’s little that shouts “seriously rich” as much as a little island in the sun to call your own. For Sir Richard Branson it is Neckar in the Caribbean, the billionaire Barclay brothers prefer Brecqhou in the Channel Islands, while Aristotle Onassis married Jackie Kennedy on Skorpios, his Greek hideway.

Now Greece is making it easier for the rich and famous to fulfill their dreams by preparing to sell, or offering long-term leases on, some of its 6,000 sunkissed islands in a desperate attempt to repay its mountainous debts.

The Guardian has learned that an area in Mykonos, one of Greece’s top tourist destinations, is one of the sites for sale. The area is one-third owned by the government, which is looking for a buyer willing to inject capital and develop a luxury tourism complex, according to a source close to the negotiations.

As hard up as they are for cash, I’m sure that they’d let go of one of the smaller landforms go for the right price too.

Next up, back to the UK, where you get assaulted and detained for taking pictures during a parade

Two police officers stopped a teenage photographer from taking pictures of an Armed Forces Day parade – and then claimed they did not need a law to detain him.

Jules Mattsson, a 16-year-old freelancer from Hackney, east London, was photographing police cadets on Saturday when he was ordered to stop and give his personal details by an adult cadet officer who claimed he needed parental permission to capture images of the cadets.

After arguing his rights in a series of protracted legal debates with officers, the sixth former says he was pushed down a set of stairs and detained for breaching the peace until the parade passed.

I guess that not everybody loves a parade.

All across Europe, as of 2011, you will no longer be able to buy “A Dozen Eggs”.

British shoppers will no longer be able to buy eggs by the dozen under new regulations approved by the European Parliament.

For the first time, eggs and other products including oranges and bread rolls – will be sold by weight instead of by the number contained in a packet.

Last week, MEPs voted to bring an end to Britain’s exemption from the metric policy despite objections from several UK members.

Eggs have traditionally been sold by the dozen or half-dozen because the old imperial measurements such as inches or pennies were calculated in groups of 12. But the new rules, to be introduced next year, mean that instead of packaging telling shoppers a box contains six eggs, it will show the weight in grams of the eggs inside.

And if their past labelling habits are any indication, the cholesteral warning labels will be bigger than the word “Eggs” on the box.

Yes, a President Has Defied the Supreme Court Before

…but it takes a certain level of, oh, let’s say, ballsiness to do so (see here).

When the 1828 election rolled around, a lot of people were terrified when they heard Andrew “Old Hickory” Jackson was running. If you’re wondering how [he] got such a lame nickname, it’s because he used to carry a hickory cane around and beat people senseless with it, and if you’re wondering why he did that, it’s because he was a fucking lunatic.

–5 Most Badass Presidents of All Time

Andrew Jackson.jpgThis photo (the best of Jackson, IMO) was taken when he was 78 years old, and if you’re thinking that grim, brooding visage is the last thing all those people he killed on the duelling fields, or on the streets, or in the saloons, or the battlefields saw right before they died, you’d be right.

Does The One have that kind of gravitas? I think not.

Therefore if anybody starts wailing about how Obama’s still gonna take away our firearms after Heller and McDonald, fix ’em with a Jackson-style cold stare until they shut up.

We’re winning, folks.

Californians Buyin’ Serbu Super Shortys

Didja know that even under Cali’s unconstitutional gun laws, we can still buy and possess these?

It seems so. Yes you need the ATF’s approval for your AOW, but still….

I may need to start thinking seriously about establishing one of those NFA corps or trusts. Lets you avoid the CLEO sign-off if you’re in a less-than-friendly neighborhood, I understand. They can be tricky, though; a good lawyer specializing in these things sounds like a must if you want to avoid prison.

I’m Free!

Free from dialysis, that is. As I’d hoped, Monday was not only McDonald day but also my day to confirm that my kidneys are back to close-to-full function. I have a follow-up test Wednesday and if that goes well I’ll have surgery Thursday to remove the dialysis catheter from my chest (which means I’ll finally be able to take a shower!!!).

Silver lining to almost dying: I’ve dropped twenty-five pounds and have radically changed my eating habits for the better. My 1- to 2-liter/day Pepsi habit has been well and truly kicked, and this renal diet they have me on for now is curiously close to Atkins, except you have to limit your salt.  Prior to all this I was scarfing fast food twice a day. No more!

We’ve hit the “Good Day” trifecta!

McDonald landed today, with civil rights restriction shattering thunder.

The last man in the US Senate to publicly vote to deny blacks their civil rights has died.

The Heartless Libertarian has announced his return from Afghanistan!

Glad I wasn’t diappointed

Though I am sorry that our good man Rivrdog was.

I have never been impressed with KelTec. Ever. In any way. They were a sort of non-entity to me as far as firearms manufacturers go. If somebody brought them up as a possible brand of purchase, I would say something along the lines of “I know a number of people who own KelTecs, and they seem to like them.”

Rivrdog’s experience means that from now on I will lead with his story before getting to anything even neutral about them.

I have used this method with Kimber products ever since another frequent RNS commenter, Mollbot, had a horrible experience with them. I can say that I have easily stopped a dozen (though probably more) purchases of Kimber pistols via this method, where I know that the people I spoke to bought pistols from different manufacturers.

I would also host Mollbot’s story about that experience if he were to write it up.

Yes, I know it was a bad reload that began Rivrdog’s problem. But the list of things KelTec did wrong on this was pages long. From not bothering to call or write to him to say that the damage wasn’t covered under warranty and would therefore cost him out of pocket; to the half-ass “fixed it”; to their returning of an unsafe firearm as “good to go”.

Zero out of Five Stars.

Women On Target – June 19, 2010

Last weekend, our gun club hosted another Women On Target event.

IMG_4316a.jpg

These are instructional events held across the country with the purpose of introducing women who are unfamiliar with firearms to the shooting sports. Our club holds one of these events each year in June.  They have grown each year and have become very successful. There were about 107 ladies registered and a waiting list of 67. With some cancellations, the actual tally was 94 shooters. The effort and work to organize and pull these off each year is quite a feat as there are almost as many volunteer club members working to instruct, monitor, act as squad leaders to ensure each group gets to where they are supposed to be, as well as many other tasks. Remember, every one of these ladies has no experience with firearms. The ladies are divided into small groups or squads, each group with a chaperone. Groups are scheduled into time slots at the various ranges at the club for individual instruction with different types of firearms. The ladies get to experience shotguns on the trap range, handguns at both the outdoor and indoor ranges, small bore rifles at one of the rifle ranges, and muzzle loaders at another rifle range.

The following pictures are but a few of those I shot during the day. When all is finished and the gates are locked after sundown, there’s no doubt about the success of the efforts of the volunteers as seen by some of the smiles on the faces of the participants.

Before the ladies are shown into the indoor range for handgun instruction, they have a session with an NRA certified instructor going over basic rules for handling firearms, firearm parts, stance and grip.

Once inside, each lady has their own individual volunteer instructor and a RSO continuously walks the line observing.

The ladies did themselves proud.

What a beautiful day it was indeed!
