Women On Target – June 19, 2010

Last weekend, our gun club hosted another Women On Target event.

These are instructional events held across the country with the purpose of introducing women who are unfamiliar with firearms to the shooting sports. Our club holds one of these events each year in June.  They have grown each year and have become very successful. There were about 107 ladies registered and a waiting list of 67. With some cancellations, the actual tally was 94 shooters. The effort and work to organize and pull these off each year is quite a feat as there are almost as many volunteer club members working to instruct, monitor, act as squad leaders to ensure each group gets to where they are supposed to be, as well as many other tasks. Remember, every one of these ladies has no experience with firearms. The ladies are divided into small groups or squads, each group with a chaperone. Groups are scheduled into time slots at the various ranges at the club for individual instruction with different types of firearms. The ladies get to experience shotguns on the trap range, handguns at both the outdoor and indoor ranges, small bore rifles at one of the rifle ranges, and muzzle loaders at another rifle range.

The following pictures are but a few of those I shot during the day. When all is finished and the gates are locked after sundown, there’s no doubt about the success of the efforts of the volunteers as seen by some of the smiles on the faces of the participants.

Before the ladies are shown into the indoor range for handgun instruction, they have a session with an NRA certified instructor going over basic rules for handling firearms, firearm parts, stance and grip.

Once inside, each lady has their own individual volunteer instructor and a RSO continuously walks the line observing.
