Hot Time In Oaktown Tonight

We in the Bay Area have been planning our commutes so as to avoid traveling on BART or driving through Oakland, Richmond, and certain areas of Hayward and Fremont following a verdict — any verdict — in the BART cop-shoots-unarmed-black-male-in-the-back Mehserle trial.

Verdict’s in. At least one gun shop I know of is planning to have online police scanner coverage of the above cities run through its shop PA system for customers’ education and enlightenment.  You can too! The below is copied from a Calguns thread, I haven’t tried it myself but I’m about to. Sadly, the remote Oakland scanner monitoring didn’t work.

Wonder Woman is Kinky

Don’t believe me? RobertaX (she of the Bettie Page ‘do, so presumably, heh, she knows whereof she speaks) notes the ah, er, interesting bondage themes in WW’s early appearances. Don’t believe her? Well, I happen to own the 1975 “Treasury” edition of Christmas With The Super-Heroes, and in it is reprinted the following tale. Pervy types can scroll down to the naughty bits which I’ve helpfully bolded for you.

…a 1942 Wonder Woman story by William Moulton Marston and Harry Peter. It’s a needlessly convoluted story, told for the most part from the point-of-view of a pine tree, in which Wonder Woman (in her disguise as Diana Prince) and Steve Trevor travel to a small town on the Canadian border. Since Amazons are able to understand the language of trees (!), Wondy is able to learn that there is a nest of Nazi saboteurs (with outrageous accents!) nearby. Trevor pooh-poohs the idea, and Diana gives him the slip so she can turn into Wonder Woman. She finds a badly-coded Nazi message hidden in the trunk of the tree, then hides her civilian clothes under the pine to do some of her own investigating.

Meanwhile, the tree is found by two children who have gotten lost in the blizzard. The tree drops Diana’s civilian clothes to them to keep them warm. A lengthy and irritating flashback begins, in which the children’s mother is sleazily romanced by a German spy. Their lumberjack father comes home and catches them, slugs out the Nazi, sends his innocent wife away, and smashes the Christmas tree and all the decorations because they remind him too much of his wife. Desperate to see their mother, the children set out alone in the blizzard and get lost.

As the flashback ends, the children are found by more Nazi spies. Unable to locate the coded message that Wonder Woman found, the Nazis believe the children took it. While one Nazi guards the boy at the tree, the other takes the girl back to her home to rob the family of their food. They are caught by her father, but the Nazi is armed, so the father doesn’t put up a struggle. Sadistically, the Nazi plans to push both of them off a cliff, but Wonder Woman shows up in the nick of time and rescues both of them.

Oh, but the Nazi treachery is not finished yet! The amorous Nazi lures the family’s mother out onto the mountain to kidnap her. When the lumberjack sees them together, he thinks they’re romancing each other and tries to jump a ravine to get to them, but Wonder Woman lassoes him, swings him around her head a few times, and tosses him to the opposite side of the ravine (the Nazi has made his escape with the mother by now) so he can tie the lasso to a tree so she and the little girl can climb across to the other side (What did I tell you about needlessly convoluted?).

Wonder Woman still doesn’t know where the little boy and his mother are being held, so she has the lumberjack tie her to a tree, hoping the Nazis will find her and take her to whichever cave they’re all holed up in. Ya know what? Wonder Woman’s kinky. Sure enough, the Nazis take her to the cave and chain her against a door before they leave. When the boy and his mother start hammering at the other side of the door, Wondy says, “Ouch! Stop spanking me — I’ll be good!” Let me say one more time for emphasis: Wonder Woman is kinky. But she easily snaps the chains and busts down the door. She frees the little boy, but suggests that the mother stay chained up for now, in a ploy to win her husband back. Yeah, I bet lumberjacks are kinky, too.

Meanwhile, the Nazis set explosives to cause an avalanche on top of Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman’s friend Etta Candy, who are on their way back up the mountain. But Wonder Woman leaps to their rescue and stops the avalanche with the uprooted pine tree while Etta Candy and her troops round up the Nazi. And when the lumberjack sees that the Nazis had to tie his wife up to keep her, he realizes that he had misjudged her. Wonder Woman plants the pine tree in the family’s yard, though they use the top of it for their Christmas tree. Happy, convoluted endings for all!

The Benefit Corporation

I think this is an intriguing idea for corporations, as long as the old option remains available.  Not every corporation would want to be a Benefit Corp, but I can see how some companies would welcome the idea, and with individuals making more & more investments based on financial performance & social responsibility, Benefit Corps could still raise quite a bit of capital at the IPO.

The Kingfisher

Alternative post title: Big fish. Small pond.

My step-dad went trolling around Pattison Lake in Olympia yesterday. He’s been having rather good luck pulling in 11-16 inch Rainbow Trout out of there lately. But something was different yesterday.

(all pics are click to enlarge)

That, my excellent fellows, is a 29 1/2 inch, 10.9lb Rainbow Trout.

Here it is next to his other keepers from yesterday.

With a fish that big patrolling a lake as small as Pattison, it is amazing there were any other fish left in there to catch.

From what The Mom relayed in her email, this big boy was actually pulling him and that 9ft fiberglass boat around while he was trying to reel it in.

OK, now I’m hungry. Give the man some congratulations.

Should we really be surprised?

For those who found a comfy rock to hide under for the past 30 years or so and didn’t already know this, Voice of America Radio has been broadcasting pro-US messages into Iran for decades.

No longer.

Voice of America’s mission is to promote U.S. interests abroad, which includes freedom in Iran. But VOA’s Persian newscast has been hijacked by pro-Tehran broadcasters.

The Obama administration’s sole strategy for defanging the Ahmadinejad regime is talk and more talk. Only, the propaganda that VOA is piping into Iran is helping the regime — thanks to deep-seated bias in favor of Tehran by Persian editors and producers whose salaries are paid by American taxpayers.

They’ve banned stories that cast the regime in a negative light, such as last year’s violent postelection crackdown on protesters in Tehran. They even refused for several days to air video footage of Neda Agha-Soltan, the young Iranian woman whose murder became an international cause celebre.

More, VOA has retaliated against broadcasters who’ve complained it’s too soft on the Iranian regime. One popular Persian-speaking broadcaster lost her anchoring job, having been demoted by a managing editor who happens to be the son of one of the Iranian mullahs.

So, apparently, the “official external radio broadcasting service of the United States government” is now telling Iranians that the official policy of America is to promote the Iranian theocratic government.

What an Obamanation.

Weather does not equal “Climate Change”

That was the refrain from the Warmenistas this last winter during one of the largest snow-dumps in recorded history.

And they were right. Short term local phenomena does not equal long-term “factuality”.

Or, as was more elegantly put by Plamus

The plural of anecdote is not data.

And yet, here they go…

Expect more of this stupidity to follow for the rest of the summer.

Bring in the Bulldozers

Over the holiday weekend in a public housing complex just north of St. Louis, MO the fire department was responding to a emergency call of a dumpster fire. When they arrived the residents fired rockets and threw large fireworks at them. The same thing happened to the police when they responded to the calls from the firefighters.

And as of Tuesday, the fight was still going on, with police firing pepper balls at the hundred or so residents of the complex so that the firefighters can try and fight the multiple arson fires.

I think mass evictions followed by bulldozers is called for to rescue the taxpayer funded property from the horde. Knock it all down with the resident’s property inside, sell the lot to the highest bidder and arrest any squatters for trespassing.

Sadly, what will most likely happen is the state will just come in an fix it all up like brand new and give it back to them like nothing ever happened.

Did the SCOTUS actually do more than just tell Chicago to pound sand?

Somebody thinks they may have inadvertently judged for general incorporation of our rights.

Smart Conservation

From the Economist.  Basically, protected lands should be chosen based on the biodiversity being protected, not the natural beauty.  Conservationists should sell of land that has little biodiversity and use the funds to buy up land that has more.

It’s like conservations started reading economics texts.
