[REC] 2 is worth watching

This film is a sequel to [REC], and even though I have not seen the first film, this one stands on its own. A well-done take on the quasi-zombie genre, somewhat in the vein of 28 Days Later, but with a twist. It’s available On Demand from Comcast right now.

Decent gun handling throughout; first film I’ve seen where a character comments derisively on another character’s repeated nervous racking of his shotgun.
It’s in Spanish with subtitles. Set in an apartment house in Barcelona, and having visited, I can confirm that yes they do look like that. Vaulted stone entries like palace courtyards, massive and lovely central staircases, and “shotgun”-style apartments running the length of the building on either side of the staircase. Pretty cool arrangement. Except for the infected, of course.

As the old adage says

Reward what you want more of. Punish what you want less of.

From this truth, we can see directly that the Obama Administration and the Democrats in Congress want people to make less money, because they are still on track to let the tax cuts passed in 2001 and 2003 expire.

They know this will happen, because the Chair of Obama’s own Council of Economic Advisers has told him as such.

Christina Romer, Chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers and economics professor at the University of California at Berkeley, has published an article (co-authored with David Romer) in the June 2010 issue of the American Economic Review titled “The Macroeconomic Effects of Tax Changes: Estimates Based on a New Measure of Fiscal Shocks.”  Unlike her statements in her role as an Obama adviser, this article is serious academic research, published in what is generally recognized as the world’s leading academic economics journal.

In the article, the Romers divide legislated tax changes into those undertaken in response to economic conditions and those that are “exogenous,” by which they mean changes made for other reasons.  The expiration of the Bush tax cuts clearly falls into the “exogenous” category, because it is the result of legislation passed years ago, before anybody could have anticipated the economic conditions under which they would expire.

What the Romers found is that exogenous tax increases, such as will occur with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, “… are highly contractionary.  The effects are strongly significant, highly robust, and much larger than those obtained using broader measures of tax changes.”

I guess there is no better way to make more people dependent on government assistance than telling them that making more of their own income is “bad”.

Bill Cosby: Futurist

Bill Cosby had a skit in his old stand-up act where he threatens his misbehaving children with death. He states that he could kill them and “make another one that looks exactly the same” and no one would care.

Little did he know that he was actually seeing into the future.

A Calgary mother won’t spend a day in jail for killing her teenage daughter with a head scarf — a decision that has prompted outrage.

A national victims’ group, based in Toronto, is stunned by the suspended sentence given to Aset Magomadova by Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sal LoVecchio on Thursday.

“I really strongly disagree. It sends a massively huge message to the rest of the country and the world that her daughter’s life was valueless,” said Joe Wamback, co-founder and chairman of the Canadian Crime Victims Foundation.

“Even though this girl may have been a handful and trouble, that’s not the issue. The issue is human life. Sentencing is not just about the criminal, but has to speak for the victim and to denunciation.”

So there you go!

I can see the advertisements already: “Are you a bad parent? Do your kids drive you insane? Well, come to Canada, where you can kill them with no repercussions!”

RNS Quote of the Day, 07/18/2010

Proper emotional habits may be acquired like other habits — by conscious exercise over a period of time. If you control your acts along the pattern you desire, and exercise your will, your emotions will change.

Inception Review

Almost everything said in the review of Inception linked in the post below was true. Very cool movie. Intelligent plot, excellent acting, spectacular visuals. I still think this is the greatest movie fight scene ever, but the zero-gravity fight in Inception (pictured below) is indeed impressive.

TGIF

My kidney function’s been back in normal range for a while now, so we’re celebrating by seeing Inception in IMAX this evening at 7:30. Dinner at the Theater = Dinner Theater? (For the moment I must avoid potatoes, strawberries, and other such healthful things, but I can eat all the Red Vines I want!)

I love living in the 21st century: call up the wife, ask if she wants to go on a date, when she says yes I click the Fandango button and seconds later print my walk-past-the-lines-and-into-the-theater tickets on the office printer.

Here’s a review that sounds like truth, not puffery. I like films that demand you concentrate. And the reviewer says, among other things, that one of the greatest fight scenes in movie history lies within this film.

Theme for the Day

I don’t care what anyone says; I still like this movie. The opening theme encapsulates a black hole’s majesty, weirdness, and the inexorably increasing pull of gravity as well as any music could IMO. Crank it to feel the waves pulling you down….

Dr Joe Responds

Joe tried to comment on yesterday’s post but it was flagged as spam. This is what he said:

Actually my hypothesis was formed almost exactly 1.5 years ago.

See here and here.

I did a little bit of math on the topic but to say my cosmological math is weak would be a gross understatement. What results I did come up with seemed plausible though. That is–the “background radiation left over from the big bang” appears to have a similar temperature to that of the event horizon of a black hole composed of all the matter of our known universe.

I recently listened to the book Parallel Worlds and was surprised and pleased to hear that others had explored the same hypothesis–at least part of it anyway. No mention was made of the direction the black hole being on the time axis. This is a critical component and the easiest thing to prove as being consistent with the known facts.

-joe

If he lost you on the direction-of-the-black-hole-being-on-the-time-axis stuff, see here and this quote from the original article:

Incidentally, this approach also suggests a solution to another of the great problems of cosmology: why time seems to flow in one direction but not in the other, even though the laws of physics are time symmetric.

Poplawski says the origin of the arrow of time comes from the asymmetry of the flow of matter into the black hole from the mother universe. “The arrow of cosmic time of a universe inside a black hole would then be fixed by the time-asymmetric collapse of matter through the event horizon,” he says.

In other words, our universe inherited its arrow of time from its mother.

He says that daughter universes may inherit other properties from their mothers, implying that it may be possible to detect these properties, providing an experimental proof of his idea.

Theories of everything don’t get much more ambitious than this. Entertaining stuff!

Oh, and turns out Joe did the math too. Elegant.

Soundboard: Tea Party Edition

Pay no attention to the people in the street
Crying out for accountability
Make a joke of what we believe
Say we don’t matter ’cause you disagree
Pretend you’re kings, sit on your throne
Look down your nose at the peasants below
I’ve got some news, we’re taking names
We’re waiting now for the judgment day

You stuff your pockets while Rome is burning
I’ve got a feeling that the tide is turning

[Chorus]
I am America, one voice, united we stand
I am America, one hope to heal our land

I will not give up on this fight
I will not fade into the light, I am America

hat tip: Sailorcurt.
