I’ve kept a bunch of old National Geographic maps of the various ocean floor topography because it’s so fascinating. Check out the amazing cliffs just off the Los Angeles coast, for example — click the link and zoom out a couple notches!

The left is atwitter with revalations about how safe it is in Arizona and other border areas, attempting to deny that violent illegal immigrants are a problem in the region. Even the DHS Haus Frau, Janet Napolitano, is making this noise.
As usual, don’t bother listening to what they say. You should only bother watching what they do.
Luna County Sheriff Raymond Cobos said that beginning on July 26, deputies will accompany inspectors to the scales in a corridor that stretches southwest from Interstate 10 at Las Cruces to the New Mexico-Arizona border, along Luna, Hidalgo and Grant counties.
“It also helps the deputies become more familiar with the ranches and their particular layouts,†Cobos said. “It’s a benefit to all of us.â€
Cobos, who will coordinate deputies from the three counties, said the deputies will work overtime to accompany the inspectors and will be paid via federal assistance from Operation Stonegarden, a Department of Homeland Security program that gives 14 states along the border flexibility to use grant funding to enhance coordination among state and federal law enforcement agencies.
“It’s a safe way of providing their personnel with protection so they don’t encounter a situation that would imperil the equipment or their lives,†Cobos said. “It’s a relatively small cost to prevent a tragedy.â€
Exactly what would agents from a federal agency have to worry about, safety-wise, in that region if it is as “safe” as Napolitano claims?

A year and a half of studiously avoiding the name Bush has really injured efforts to tie Republicans to the past like an anchor. A new poll shows that the GOP has achieved a break from the Bush legacy, despite carrying basically the same ideas.
What haven’t the Democrats blamed on Bush over the last 18 months?
I fell out of my chair, almost crushing my skull on a filing cabinet, and was rolling around on the ground laughing so damn hard at that sentence that I just about hyperventilated. Thankfully, a coworker showed up, reminding me of where I work and that laughing was against company policy.
When will the left accept that it is their policies, plus the Bush policies, that has a goodly portion of America wanting them to STFU make a hasty exit?
I have to go to Los Angeles (Torrance, specifically) for a quick but necessary court appearance next Thursday. Because I don’t know how long the appearance will take, I will schedule my departure for late Thursday afternoon, so I might have several hours to kill before I have to get back to the airport. All I can find of interest in the Torrance vicinity is a very large shopping mall (blech). I’m guessing the cab ride to the Getty Museum would take too long and cost too much, and the International Printing Museum (which I really do want to see someday) is only open weekends. Any ideas for sightseeing in the LAX vicinity?
Yes, I’ll be packing the Beast in my luggage, but sadly I can’t (yet) lawfully carry it about town or into court.
Finally, a light rail that I won’t have to listen to people whine about how it’s destroying homes & neighborhoods. It can just run along the highways.
Of course, knowing drivers out here, some idiot would fail to look behind themselves while changing lanes or exiting and find themselves hit by the train.
The importance of robots outside of the UAV context are immense in large part because the Baby Boom generation does not have sufficient children to see us off to our reward; we are going to slide into dementia and be cared for and comforted by cuddly robotic dolls that we will think are human, to judge by where things are going in Japan.
