A great idea

From one of my co-workers this morning:

I know how to improve the US economy and further check the ambitions of China, NK, & Iran (and all the other little tin-pot dictators).  Why don’t we just stop being dicks to our allies & start selling them the weapons they want.  I mean, we are savant like in our ability to create precision engines of destruction, and our allies know this, so why don’t we sell them F-22s & F-18s & Naval Carriers & whatever other toys they might want?  If security is an issue, just sell them export versions without all the EW, FC, & avionics goodies. Who doesn’t think that Japan, Australia, South Korea, India, and most of Europe wouldn’t want a supply of our gear?

I mean, it’s perfect, we get jobs & money (which encourages us to make more & better weapons), the rest of the world gets the ability to keep ambitious rogue states in check without waiting for a carrier group to move into the area; and best yet, we can stop playing World police.  And, if South Korea decides to try out their new Carrier Air Wing on Pyongyang, we won’t be the ones pulling the trigger for them.

I think my coworker is on to something.

Plugging the Hole

I’ve been wearing my 5.11 Covert Tactical dress shirts every day to the office, and they work great. The hidden chest pockets hold my “second wallet,” (spare ID, debit cards, a spare credit card, and a few other things)* a butane lighter, an extra flashlight, and spare contact lenses and case, all with no problems and practically invisible. Plenty of space for a carry gun, too, once the Calguns Foundation’s sued my local County into complying with the Constitution and giving citizens carry permits.
The only problem is that 5.11 didn’t make these shirts in white — pretty much the basic business dress shirt staple! Talk about a hole in the product line!
Well, now they’ve corrected that with their new “Version 2.0” of the Covert Tactical dress shirt. I’ll be asking Santa for a few of these to try out, but I anticipate they’ll be every bit as cool as Version 1.0. It’s pretty tough to prevent dark-colored items (like guns) from showing under a white dress shirt, but I’m confident 5.11’s solved that problem.

* In my regular wallet I carry only credit cards (less liability if they’re stolen than debit cards, which stay in the hidden wallet), cash, receipts, driver’s license (which does NOT have my home address), and things like Costco membership cards.

Leopard Kills a Mule Deer

My specialty pistols mentor Ernie Bishop went mule-deer hunting with his new 6.5 Leopard pistol built on a BAT action (drooool.)

I spotted this boy at about 550 yards away but had no place to make a shot. I thought he had his back to me and was not worrying to much about making myself small (which is difficult to do). I found a small alley way that would let the bullet fly free of brush, and wouldn’t you know it, he had spotted me. I guess he didn’t have his back to me the whole time after all. Just by the way he acted, I assume he had been pursued this season already. He was 430 yards from me, and disappeared going up a draw. I was hoping he would come out on top where I could see him. I pre-ranged the area I believed/hoped him to show up at. he didn’t seem real spooked, so I felt like I had a chance.

I loaded the Leopard, set up and dialed 7MOA, set the parallax, and waited. Somewhere between 3-5 minutes passed when he showed up where I thought he would. I re-lasered him @ 496 yards. I st up and made the shot. I saw him go down in the scope. This is the third big game animal I have taken with the 6.5 Leopard specialty pistol that Mac’s Gunworks built for me. The 130 Berger leaving the muzzle right at 3100 FPS is amazing to watch on game. Since I wanted to take pics I packed everything to the Buck. I packed out all the meat (deboned) plus all of my gear, but the Black’s Creek pack once again handled it all well. It may have been 496 yards to the deer but there were several draws that caused me to burn some extra calories though   I have a couple of doe antelope permits, another buck antelope tag, and a elk tag. We will see if I get to all of them or not.

Congrats Ernie! I’ve yet to hunt anything myself, but these “horse pistols” as Rivrdog calls them will do just fine if you do your part.

Handy Tip

My specialty pistols mentor Ernie Bishop revealed his latest creation the other day.

He got a question:

Someone contacted me off-line asked what was the small white piece of paper on the back of the stock, just above the grip.
It is a “D” and a “W”
D for drop and W for wind.
It is there to tell me/remind me where my true zero is, since there is no zero stop.
My 7mm SAUM XP is set-up the same way.

Rotational errors is something that happens to everyone after awhile.
This allows you to get back to your zero easily.

That’s a good idea; I think I’ll do that for my guns. As for the pistol itself, he says:

Chuck McIntosh of Mac’s Gunwork’s did all the work (307-689-2796) except fluting the barrel.

BAT action, Jewell trigger, Krieger 1-8 twist barrel, Mac brake, McRee pistol aluminum stock, Camo cerakote by Chuck.

Chambering is the 6.5 Leopard (270WSM Norma brass necked down-Not a tight neck).

Holland scope level.

H-1000, Fed 210M’s, 130 Bergers @ 3085 fps.

Shot this rig out to 1200 yards confirming drops-Shoots real nice!

Earmarks By Another Name

He’ll remain nameless, but I met a Congressman the other day. He’s the incumbent Democrat in my S.F. Bay Area Congressional district and isn’t expected to lose, so that should narrow it down a bit for those who want to figure it out. I was invited to attend a private meeting between him, his staff, and a deserving local agency in need of Federal funding.

In general, he looked burned out and he bitched about the “deficit hawks” in Congress who are preventing all deficit spending. A frustrated unrepentant Dem was he. Then it got interesting.

Here’s how they’re getting earmarks through nowadays: he said earmarks are now euphemistically referred to as “appropriations requests.” He acknowledged that regular old earmarks — “legislative appropriations requests” — are verrrry difficult “in these troubled times” (meaning they’re dangerous to incumbents’ political health, heh heh) but said that “administrative appropriations requests” are still quite doable. Those are where you, the requesting constituent, find some pot of money in a Federal agency or department’s budget you’d like to tap into, and your friendly neighborhood Congressman calls up the agency and “suggests” that they direct it your way as an administrative decision.

The best thing about this sort of earmark, of course, is that it’s pretty much undocumented and untraceable.

It’s getting too expensive to even off yourself at home

I’m actually OK with this, and think that if Japan does enact laws regarding it, they should be laws that create a formal process by which a landlord can demand damages (and make sure the landlord is not seeking more than is fair).
