Congratulations Doctor

I accompanied the wife to her dissertation defense and she performed brilliantly. Dissertation approved pending minor edits, which is what we expected, and which also means she’s an Ed.D. in all respects except having the paper in hand, which will take a few months (it’s a school bureaucracy, after all).

We’re both exhausted, but I thought I’d bring out this old favorite, as it expresses my feelings exactly. Crank it, of course.

Love ya babe!

This is brilliant

The proper way to respond to overly touchy groups who don’t like your humor.

Google is literally starting a war

South America Still Battling Over Google Maps Error

Costa Rica accused Nicaragua of deploying troops inside its territory last month in a dredging operation around a island in the San Juan River that has been the source of friction for more than a century.

Of course, Google is blaming the State Department for providing “faulty data.” You mean, Obama’s State Department screwed something up? I don’t believe it. Maybe we can just give Nicaragua and Costa Rica a “reset button.” That should make it all better.

RNS Quote of the Day: 11/15/10

It is a great analogy.

When you go to the airport, you get two options: get your picture taken naked, or get your genitals groped. Now, the country is outraged.

But, if they were to put those two options on a ballot and let you choose which one you wanted on November 2nd, we’d call it democracy.

You know it’s sad but true.

I’m not dead yet!

Working on it though.

Howdy all! Sorry for the reclusiveness, but I’m getting schooled.

It seems I’ve fallen out of the blogoverse and landed on a planet called “Calculus”, which is covered in large graphs and grids, and am getting dragged about said landscape by these creatures they call “Functions” (as well as these other creatures which look just like Functions, but aren’t, and are called “Not-A-Function”).

Hey, I didn’t get here early enough to name the wildlife or I’d have thought of something much more lively.

Anyway, I need to get a rather particular average grade to get the hell off this rock and, as hard as I was trying, I wasn’t getting said average. And I’m still not getting said average. But I’m a hell of a lot closer now than I was three weeks ago.

I knew when I signed up for this class it would mess with my blogging schedule. I do go there right after work every AM and class lasts an hour. Then I go up to the tutoring center for at least an hour. After all that I finally get to go home and feed myself and the dogs and go to bed to start it over again.

If it is a weekend, I try to get ahead in the homework department and take care of personal business.

So don’t go thinking I’m off having loads of fun without you or anything. I mean, yeah, sure, there are college girls involved. But let’s be realistic about how many of them can I have to myself?

I will try to get by and drop in more often as this quarter winds down (only three and a half weeks to go). I’d also like to thank the rest of the crew, who’ve been doing yeoman’s work keeping the front page full.

For those who may have missed it

There is a new Sherlock Holmes series out, titled simply “Sherlock”.

Set in the current day, it is utterly fascinating and works so wonderfully well that I’m labeling it a “Must-See”. Unlike those other “Must-See” programs you’ve heard about, this one will actually entertain while putting you on the edge of your couch (or recliner, if that is more your style).

Even if you aren’t a big Sherlock Holmes fan, you may as well watch it. Your tax dollars are helping pay for it to be purchased and broadcast.

Check your local PBS listings for it. While it has run through all three episodes already, they’ll replay it. That is what PBS does. Or, do what I’m doing and buy the DVD at the link.

The Fixer

The guy’s name is Max Hardberger. As you might guess, he’s awesome. Steals tankers and cargo ships back from pirates and the like. All in a day’s work, ho hum. Seriously, RTWT.

Long-Range Handgunning

Good article, primarily about 1000-yard sixgunning.

Found after a google search for “Roger Clouser” inspired by this post and article linked at Western Rifle Shooters.

If you’d like more in this vein, here’s a post I wrote after reading McGivern on the same subject.

As for the author of the article above, here’s a bunch of his very intriguingly-titled gun articles.

Fix the federal budget shortfall

I just started clicking on every option and I had eliminated the budget shortfall before I ever got to Social Security.

ETA:

I know what they should do, they should send this out to everyone, with links to the complete text of bills & proposals, & have every registered voter make their choices of what to cut & what to tax. Any response that does not eliminate the shortfall is ignored.

Then count up the votes for each option, and the highest tally’s get enacted until there is a budget surplus.
