Police SWAT teams under fewer restrictions than troops in Afghanistan:

…SWAT teams frequently fail to conform to the basic precautions required in military raids. For instance, after reading about a drug raid in Missouri, an army officer currently serving in Afghanistan commented:

“My first thought on reading this story is this: Most American police SWAT teams probably have fewer restrictions on conducting forced entry raids than do US forces in Afghanistan. For our troops over here to conduct any kind of forced entry, day or night, they have to meet one of two conditions: have a bad guy (or guys) inside actively shooting at them; or obtain permission from a 2-star general, who must be convinced by available intelligence (evidence) that the person or persons they’re after is present at the location, and that it’s too dangerous to try less coercive methods.”

I do not consider a judge signing off on a warrant to be the equivalent of the two-star-general’s evaluation, above. It ought to be, but it obviously ain’t anymore. Less coercive methods seem not to be a consideration.

Kudos to AP and the Atlantic for some awesome photojournalism. Click the link and check them all out.

This photo of a Libyan rebel removing a tank cannon from the turret is pretty cool.

I love the sci-fi look of those UB-32 rocket launchers:

Oh, Hell No!

The city government of  Cedar Falls, IA voted almost unanimously to force citizens to place the keys to their commercial properties in a lock box accessible to city government employees.

In the name of “Safety” of course.

Ordinance #2740 ( An unfunded city-wide mandate) was passed with a resounding 6 to 1 vote on Monday night. It demands that citizens of Cedar Falls give the government keys to their commercial properties through universal ‘lock boxes’. The intent of the program is to provide increased safety and protection to personal, private property which include businesses, apartments and some rental houses– which by the way– comes at the expense of furthering wayward erosion of fundamental constitutional rights.

Here is the video of the City Council meeting when it was passed, via Gateway Pundit.

Sorry, I might install the lock-box, but it’d be empty and I’d eat the fine if they ever stopped by to check it.

It’d be more likely that I’d just move my business outside city limits.

Start saving up for those snow tires

What the hell am I talking about, you may ask? It is the middle of June, fercrssakes!

Well, just an FYI for those living outside the Puget Sound region: It is the middle of June and I do not need all the fingers on my right hand to count the number of days we’ve have had locally which were above 70 degrees so far in 2011.

Hell, I fired up the wood stove again last night.

The answer?

Some unusual solar readings, including fading sunspots and weakening magnetic activity near the poles, could be indications that our sun is preparing to be less active in the coming years.

The results of three separate studies seem to show that even as the current sunspot cycle swells toward the solar maximum, the sun could be heading into a more-dormant period, with activity during the next 11-year sunspot cycle greatly reduced or even eliminated.

The results of the new studies were announced today (June 14) at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held this week at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

…..

“If we are right, this could be the last solar maximum we’ll see for a few decades,” Hill said. “That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth’s climate.”

I’ll be waiting around here for the gullibles, telling me “B-b-b-but the sun has nothing to do with the Earth’s climate! AlGore told me so!”

Where is the line?

I read this today, about a young girl who was forcibly sent to a “re-education” camp for gay teens, and while I completely agree with the post & the advice given at the end, it gets me thinking.

I’m very libertarian, and therefore I tolerate (grudgingly at times) a very wide array of behaviors from others that I personally find objectionable even though they don’t cause me any direct harm, and that includes bad parenting. Sure, most bad parenting causes some harm, in some way or another (we are all a bit damaged because our parents weren’t perfect), but for the most part it’s no more damaging than living with a smoker.

But where do you draw the line? When does bad parenting cross over from being standard human error into “you need to be not allowed to raise your own kids”. I know some people who think us gun owners should have our kids taken away unless all of our guns are fully disassembled and locked in a vault (preferably off-site from the home), and clearly I think that is a bit extreme. However, what about the parent who owns guns, doesn’t lock them up, and is negligent about teaching firearms safety? Is the parent who spanks equal to the parent who punches, bruises, or breaks bones? Some say yes. Is the parent who is emotionally damaged (& thus passing on that damage to their kids) as bad as the parent who gets off on destroying their kids emotionally? How do we tell the difference? What about the mom in the linked article? Is she being a good, although misguided parent, or is she outsourcing her abuse?

How do we objectively qualify what is abuse & what is just life not being fair?

RNS Quote of the Day, 06/13/11

From Victor Davis Hanson, leading a military-history tour group in Europe:

Go to Europe and see the left-wing desired future for America: dense urban apartment living by design rather than by necessity; one smart car; no backyard or third bedroom; dependence on mass transit; political graffiti everywhere demanding more union benefits or social entitlements; entourages of horn-blaring, police-escorted technocrats racing through the streets on the hour; gated inherited homes of an aristocratic technocracy on the Mediterranean coast, Rhine, Danube, etc., exempt from much socialist and environmental law; $10 a gallon gas; sky-high power bills; racial segregation coupled with elite praise of illegal immigration and diversity; and unexamined groupthink on green issues, entitlements, and the culpability of the U.S. Drink it all in and you have the liberal agenda for an America to be.

Unique peace making

At RNS Blogstation: Firebase Blue!

It all started one day at The Wife’s place of employ.

A couple of her coworkers remarked at how much they did not like her sweater. Repeatedly.

After the friendly ribbing, The Wife replied on how she liked the sweater and that if they’d like to back up their opinions with some less-than-mortal combat, she’d like to stuff a pie in each one of their faces.

And they both accepted the challenge.

Fast forward a couple weeks and into our kitchen, and it was on!

This is the process about halfway through.

22

I had to stop taking pictures after this so that I could restrain the three from having the fight actually inside the kitchen.

Two dozen full-size and almost three dozen half-size pudding pies, and after moving the three outside for their free for all and this was the result.

20a

Note The Wife on the left in the “offending” sweater.

Then, your friendly blogger got to hose the three of them off (yay for me!) before they stripped down to hit the showers.

You too could have this much fun. Just instill upon your missus that this is the proper way to resolve disagreements between her and her friends.

Ask and thou shalt receive

In response to Jennifer’s query:

I didn’t “become” a gun nut. I spent most of my formative years (ages 10-18) working behind the counter and in the back room of a gun shop.

While that sounds cool and all, it was the family business, so while most kids that age were out having friends and such, I was selling ammo to the local Cletii during store hours, assembling AR’s from kits after store hours and spending weekends  shooting either DCM rifle or pre-IDPA pistol courses, reloading my practice ammo or working tables at the local gun shows.

OK, that still sounds much cooler than it actually was.

Let’s just say that it was “so cool” I didn’t even think about firearms for almost a decade after the store closed. I was an owner, but I can count at least eight years that I didn’t put a round downrange. Thankfully, the skills you learn as a child never really leave you, whether it is playing piano or clearing a table of steel plates in a Metal Magic course.
